2026 Emmys: Mariska Hargitay tears up after winning 2 awards for 'My Mom Jayne' transcript

Thank you. Hi. >> Hi. I'm Scott Denton and David Smith from Gold Derby. This is your first win in 20 years. It's the anniversary that you won for best actress. So, how does this time feel different? >> It feels extraordinarily new. That's what it feels and it's very deeply meaningful to me to have gone into a completely different arena. And to be recognized like this is um really beyond my wildest dreams. I just It was so deeply moving to me that the film resonated so deeply with people and that was enough.

So, this is um something. It's going to take a minute to process it. >> I'm Michelle from People Magazine. At this point you've had time to process the actual making of the film and the change that happened in your relationship with your mom. Where are you now? What is How would you define the relationship that you have with your mom? >> Um completely different. You know, that's what I said. The The making of this film has been a gift beyond my knowing because I went into it to you know, it was an archaeological dig.

I went in to discover, to find out, to search for who she was, who the woman was behind the pose, what mattered to her, what made her tick, what who was she on a real level and it was extraordinary to see, you know, so much of the film was made by me watching the archival. There was so much archival. But getting to really view somebody in a private moment, getting to just see a look on a face and to mine down and learn about her as a as a musician and an artist and a mother and an ambitious woman back then when the rules weren't the same and fighting against being put in a box, which, you know, I've made my uh career. >> [laughter] >> This is what I've been doing is for years saying, you can't we can't We are so complex [clears throat] as individuals, as human beings, and people can't put us in a box.

And that's somebody that that that my dad taught me is don't let anybody ever put you in a box or let you know what you're capable of. And I think that it's sort of the creative process many times is about being able to tolerate your own fear. Um to handle it, but to sit in it, tolerate it, and then do it anyway. And that's what's been extraordinary extraordinary because, as I said in my speech tonight, I didn't when I decided to make this film, I didn't see myself directing it.

But I learned very quickly that I was the only one that could direct it. I mean, this film. And many many people could have made extraordinarily beautiful films, but but not this film. So. And just to answer The other thing is I think you asked how am I different. I'm so different. Everything about me is different now because I have so much more internal space from dealing with my demons, my fears, the things I was most afraid of, and carrying the secret for so long.

I didn't want to do that anymore. And so I wanted to unburden myself. And that was part of the impetus impetus of making the film. Not only to get to know my mother, but to unburden myself and not carry the secret. So, it's um pretty extraordinary. There's a lot of internal space now. So. Any other questions? >> [laughter] >> I have one. Gloria Cowan was on Words Buzz. you mentioned Gloria Steinem on stage and you are about to be the first female hosting the Emmys in 15 years.

What do you hope these wins say to women watching? >> We have universes inside of us. Don't let anyone else define you. Dreaming, as Gloria said, is part of planning. Dreaming is actually part of planning. And so I'm at a place in my life where I just say yes. I said yes to Broadway. And I said yes to hosting the Emmys. When they called me, I thought it was a joke. And uh then I went, "Why not?" So, it's a year of firsts and a year of saying yes and a year of um not limiting myself or not being governed by fear.

Like, what would I do if I wasn't afraid? What would I do? What if it all works out? That's the process of art, right? Is you go into something and go, "I don't know how to do this yet." And so, I'm in that place right now of going, "I'll figure it out." So, I'm really happy right now. We're good. >> Um it's Jazz Tang ready. Congratulations on the win. It's such a beautiful documentary, beautiful tribute to your mother.

Next week, you've got the Emmys. Are you ready for next week, Taraji? How How >> I don't know if I have a choice. It's been a big week. This hosting the Emmys is no joke. They undersold it to me. They said, "Oh, yeah, you just come in on a Thursday, rehearse two days and you're good." That's a lie. Um it's a lot of work, but it's been such a joy. And instead I feel like I get to do all these things. And I'm working with this extraordinary Colbert team.

I mean, how lucky I'm pinching myself that I get to work with this kind of extraordinary talent. But, um, I just can't believe at this place in my life, like the third act is starting and it's pretty awesome. So, it's I just feel like I can't believe I get to do all this great stuff. And yeah, being on SVU our season 28, you know, you sort of think like, "Okay, well, let's wrap it up." But, we just seem to be starting now.
