LEGO Minecraft: The Red Barn 21187 reviewed! Well-designed even if you don't play the game transcript

Hello. This here is the Lego Minecraft The Red Barn set. I bought this for its retail price of $100 US and built it live over on my Twitch channel. This set comes with just two full minifigures, but a host of various types of mobs. And there's a lot to look at here inside and out. First of all, I want you to see what it looks like just generally speaking all around. See, it does get completely closed up, but you see these obvious hinges here, though.

It will open up. Also, I when I first saw the pictures, uh I I guess I just didn't recognize that there was so much gray that most of the roof is gray. I just didn't see that. It kind of surprised me as I put this together. Is there another layer that goes on here? There is not. Let me put some of those animals into place, though. But before I do, let's look at them closely. First up, the goat. New for 2022. Not the only set to include it.

Brand new head mold for that. And it's able to angle the head down and up. A number of people have pointed out that the horn should actually be a different color. I do agree with that, but you know what? That doesn't distract me that much. The cow and baby cow are not new, and they use the exact same headpiece for the two. So, if you added some more pieces to this, you can make yourself a second adult, or if you took some pieces away, you can make yourself a second baby.

A horse is a horse, of course. Of course. And this one's pretty nice. The dark orange and white color scheme works out pretty well there. And this, you know, is able to angle the head down. It's also able to go straight up like that. And you also have the tail that's able to go up and down. There's not much else to really talk about here. Uh, brown color for the for the hooves there. Rounded off just a little bit. Yeah, I I like these, you know.

And then there's a chicken jockey, which is, of course, a chicken with a baby zombie on top. Baby zombie is its own thing. little little uh baby fig like a like a mini mini mini mini mini fig with the print on it on the extra small specialized head and the chicken is built up as before. I think you can also rebuild this to have the the wings in or just simply remove the brackets if you want to. That's a printed specialized mold for the head, but nothing new here.

Let's look at the stuff on the outside of the barn. The face of it is somewhat blocky as expected and there is no working door for that. Couple of lights out here. A little bit of foliage down below. And just the slightest bit of farmland here with some some wheat being grown and also some carrots. There's also this container with a single carrot that's been brought out. These are the 2x two trans dark blue colored jumpers there which work really well for water.

And we got some light colored wood used to build the outside structures including the pen. You got a a little pair of gates here and some fencing over along the side. There's another gate inside light over here and a small uh action feature that's built into the ground here. So, what you do is by default have the potatoes down beneath the ground. You got the water there and you know, you plant them and then they're just going to grow like that.

Would have been a little bit more effective if they could have gotten a couple of studs on the side here. Uh but I guess it wouldn't fit. I I guess I kind of get it. But, you know, it would have been nice to to start with something small and then just have it look like it's it is fully germinated rather than starting with just plain dirt. But that's totally totally just a a nitpick. More flowers over here. Bucket with some milk and a random egg is included which you can put anywhere.

There's nothing else to be really seen or interacted with around here. I do like this side though, how open this is and how you can get some visibility into there. But what you really need to do next is look inside, which involves just simply opening this up here. There's a an axle that helps to keep it all together. But check that out. Okay. All right. This is nice. This is a good amount of space and usable space at that.

It's laid out pretty well. You can easily put an animal in each of these little pens down here. And then there is mini fig access via the ladders going up to the attic space. Storage for some hay. The person can sleep there. a full bed and a little suggestion of a side table. And of course, when this is all together, the upper level, you have to imagine it. But, you know, in there when it's all closed up, the upper level is just one thing.

So, figures would be able to be over here easily. The chest with the the relatively new top piece that was just introduced, I think beginning of this year or end of end of last year. U the the flat one, you know, that actually works much better. Couple of of apples in there. That's it. There's nothing else up here on this this upper level. Crafting table down there. Something you always want to have. And storage for another accessory over here with the the axe.

The diamond axe might have been something that was just found along the way. But what I like about this is that it it's believable. It has enough height in here where you can put a minifigure in this space and it's not cramped. You have enough depth so you can move around there. Like even with my adult hands, I can fully get a figure all the way around here. fully get a figure in here. It's not feeling stuck at all and yet it's not too empty either there.

There's enough here and you know you can move some of the accessories from outside in here as well. I don't know. It just feels like a pretty good balance to me. Also, the fact that it fully opens like this 180° means that you don't have a lot of wasted depth there. So, it it's efficient with its usage of space. And that that flat face, I think, is conducive to play within a limited amount of of space. Or if you have a bunch of space, then well, this just leaves you with a bunch more.

And then the other side also looks interesting. Like this, this just makes it look like a a larger barn, you know? So, you put this up up against a wall or something. And you know, even even these areas are still a little bit accessible from this side if you're not leaving the other open. So, you know, this makes for a nice nice bit of structure. Maybe would have been nice if this segment right here was easy to remove cuz this little bit over here can easily be popped off.

But if this was easy to remove as well, then you could change up the shape of it and make it fit into an even narrower little little slot of space. There are only two minifigures in this set, which is odd for how big it is and how many pieces it has and how much it costs, but instead they focused on increasing the number of mobs. And I think that was the right choice to make here. So, player character over on the left with a shovel, and on the right is what they label as a jungle villager.

Have not played Minecraft in a while. Cannot confirm, but uh just another new print and color for a villager. And yes, the hat, the straw hat is removable and it has a little bit of extra shaping around the back of it. And you can just put it on a player character like that if you want, which gives you this. Finally, these are the leftovers. And that's that. Since LEGO does have two barn sets on the market right now simultaneously, viewers have asked that I do this, that I show these two at the same time on on screen.

And so I am doing that, but I I I do it with with caution because these are not at all the the same thing. They're not intended to be in the same class. This is a four plus set. It has to have a minimum number of pieces. Has to be very, very extraordinarily easy to put together. I did my full review and gave my full thoughts on this overpriced set over here. But again, I was asked by viewers to show these together. So, I wanted to quickly do that.

So, this is a pretty good, well-built, kind of charming set with good play value. And just generally, I don't have too much in the way of complaints about it. as a Minecraft set. I would definitely love it to be more detailed, have a higher level of resolution, but that wouldn't be appropriate to Minecraft. Uh, but this is just so close to being beyond um a Minecraft set. This is so close to being a really good barn set, a really good farming life kind of set.

But regarding that price, it's not $100 cool to me. It's not $100 well-designed. It's not $100 of of play value. Not even not even today. I could maybe maybe see this being $80 US. Yeah, give me 20% off then then we'll talk. And even that even that is still going to be, you know, two 2020 to super super overinflated prices kind of kind of okay, you know. In other words, not really okay ideally. Yeah. And not I mean what 3 years ago, 4 years ago or so, probably could have gotten this for like 70 bucks 70.

So yeah, needs to be cheaper, but what is here is good. If you think that you get a good value here, then power to you. I'm not going to uh I'm not going to recommend that you don't get this. Uh but if you can get it on sale, all the better more, especially for a a good chunk off, not just a little 5% or something like that. Thanks for watching.
