Today we're doing a trenching comparison with two separate machines. The first is a Ventrac 4500y, the next is a comparable mini skid-steer. Each machine has a Kubota D902 engine and they also weigh about the same. Mini skid steers are popular amongst contractors because they add a lot of versatility to their fleet. For those that aren't familiar with Ventrac it can sometimes be easy to confuse it with more of a garden tractor.
While the Ventrac certainly excels at lawn mowing and other landscaping related tasks all of our attachments are heavy-duty commercial grade. This means the ground engaging attachments are built to handle the types of jobs that would otherwise be reserved for compact track loaders like this or even small skid steers. Today each machine is going to trench to a depth of 36 inches and 100 feet in length to the orange cones.
Both operators have been given instructions to go as fast as they safely can with each machine. So we just completed our test and again to reiterate, both these machines have the exact same engine in them, we were digging to the same depth, and they were both at full throttle the whole time, working as hard as they could. We ran them both at full throttle but the chain speed is different because of the hydraulic flow versus the electric PTO clutch that's why the mini skid steer takes more time than the Ventrac does.
