great this is a training video for preparing services at beenleigh Baptist Church in particular putting together the order of service for a Sunday worship and I just want to take you through my process this is what I usually do and it'll show both the tools that we use and also the spiritual process that we go through when we're wanting to prepare a service so I usually start by just praying so I'm going to do that right now father I pray that as I spend this time now preparing for the service on Sunday that you'll guide my thoughts that you'll draw our hearts together in unity as we worship you and I pray Lord that this training video might be helpful to whoever's watching it as they also consider how they may prepare material for the Gathering of the body as We Gather to worship to be trained to be equipped and edified and to prepare our lives each week for service and so we just Commit This Time to you now in Jesus name amen so um I'm going to be sharing my computer screen with you as you can see I'm going to show you the tools that we use so we use a tool called Trello and Trello is basically a a planning tool and you can see here all of our services the date at the top running through until the end of the year and I'm working on the service for the first of October and you can see the planning that's already happened in advance we've got our team roster so this will tell us who the people are on the music team and then you'll also see that we've got our preacher and the passage that he's preaching on and we're trying to include both an old and a new testament passage read during the service and you'll see that we've got in this case a baptism and communion is also planned and there's also at school holiday so possibly a holiday special so these are all just ideas even as we're preparing an order of service the thoughts that have already gone into or the things that have been allocated to this service but what we really want to do is now seek guidance from the spirit of God and carefully planning to help the people put their focus on Jesus so you'll see I've gone to the possible order of service in our Trello and there are the three key things that are happening in the service we've got our sermon by Pastor Keith which is on Jesus walking on the water and um there's a phrase in um that um message about the hardened hearts of the disciples and um so as I was thinking about what response might come out of that I've already done some pre-thinking there but I want to take you through how I got there so so I have this open and this is where I put ideas and thoughts and then I can save them and change them and all the people who are part of the service planning can see this document and you'll see it there in the first October let's not get ahead of ourselves so we can we've got a bit of an idea of what um is happening in the service of what are the possible features of the service you'll also see here that we've got a repertoire list and there's a general song list this actually tells us what we sang last week and the new songs that we're working on and then there's a big list here of all of the songs that we can choose from or rather this is a list of the songs that we have done in about the last 12 months or so and you can see there's quite a few songs there so last week we sang Hosanna praise is rising the king of glory what a beautiful name Christ Our Hope in life and death and have faith in God and our new song list for 2023 has Christ Our Hope and life and death I thank God shout it loud the power of the Cross which is the new Casting Crowns version never once this Our God by Phil Wickham king of glory Reckless Love be lifted high and glorious by Calvin Zuma so um we obviously want to be thinking always about something old something new something borrowed and something blue let me just explain those ideas briefly for you something old means something from the church's Rich history so that might be a hymn or a classic song that has carried through and stood the test of time so that's one of the things that we're thinking of as we prepare a service something new he put a new song in my mouth in my praise him to a god that many would see and fear and put their trust in the Lord so we're always wanting to sing something new and by new I mean two years or or um no more written in the last two years no more and so that it's new uh it could be new to the church but primarily new as in a new science coming out of our our world today and one of the reasons for that is that we don't want to just be a church for the people we've got we want to reach future Generations Something Borrowed so borrowed is something specifically that relates to the sermon or the passage that's being preached on and then something blue something old something new something boring something blue that's something of beauty something of artistry something that inspires something that that is Rich and challenges the heart and touches the emotions and connects our mind and our will and our emotions together so those are kind of some guiding things that we do and this is the kind of place that we put together but before we do any of this what I always do is start with the scripture reading so let's go to Mark chapter six and in the cev version which is where we're preaching from this week and I usually like to read the cev version just because it's a a very straightforward English version so the Contemporary English version Mark chapter six let's go and last week we spoke on Jesus feeding the 5000 so you'll see that there so this week Pastor Keith's going to be taking um verses 45 through 2 verses 52. so I like to just read it through and just consider it and ponder it um so let's do that right now so Mark Mark 6 45 at once Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and start back across to bethsaida but he stayed until he had sent the crowds away which crowds and that's the crowds we were talking about last week the crowds that were fed the five thousand then he told them goodbye and went on the side of the mountain to pray later in the evening he was still there by himself and the boat was somewhere in the middle of the lake he could see that the disciples were struggling hard because they were rowing Against the Wind not long before morning Jesus came toward them he was walking on the water and was about to pass the boat and when the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water they thought he was a ghost and they started screaming all of them saw him and they were terrified but at the same time he said don't worry I'm Jesus don't be afraid he then got into the boat with them and the wind died down and the disciples were completely confused their minds were closed and they could not understand the true meaning of the Loaves and the bread see so we've got Jesus walking on water and yet still referring back to the story of the Loaves and the bread and so um why do we read this why do we read this well we read it because we're looking for something old something new something borrowed Something Borrowed means something that relates specifically to the text and we're wanting to think about what we might include in our worship service that refers to this scripture and so we're thinking about Jesus walking on water now obviously the the songs that are immediately going to jump to mind Jesus walking the water you might think of oceans except oceans is US walking on the water or Peter stepping out of the boat and going walk in the water not in this story but it still might be an appropriate song So What I often will do is I will go to song select which is um the church has a license for and we laugh and and we can look in song select we can see themes so I'll come in a song select and I'll go to themes and if we think about the themes that came out of the passage so it was water so Jesus's Living Water there's songs like um uh never thirst again or Living Water so you know you might go down that idea of water but maybe the bigger theme let's go back to themes again might be unbelief or lack of faith or faith as the the um the disciples obviously we're lacking Faith so we've got there we go oceans popped up we have to eat my foul but we've got others we've got Christ Our Hope in life and death that's interesting because that's one that's on our new song list let me keep looking God of Wonders and we've got um it is well and that's got if we if we look at the lyrics of it as well um we've got um you know the whole idea that even though we're in the middle of turmoil grander has quaked before seas that are shaken and stirred can be calmed and broken for my regard as Jesus got on the boat the water was instantly um quiet so um that would be an appropriate song this is just showing you some ideas as we consider things so what else what other themes were there um let's look at the passage again so Jesus made his disciples get into the boat so there's the the obeying um later in the evening when Jesus was by himself so Jesus was prying up on the mountain so we might look at prayer he could see the disciples were struggling because they were rowing Against the Wind we could look at turmoil and difficulty um Jesus they saw Jesus walking on the water so obviously we've got the Jesus walking on water as a theme or Miracles is a thing you might think of Waymaker Miracle Worker promise he but light in the Darkness we might think about this idea don't worry I'm Jesus Don't Be Afraid let's have a look at that let's look at fear or fear not fear no things on fear um sorry let's have a think about um it's a trust Let's Get Trust which is the opposite of fear we've got songs like Raise A Hallelujah again oceans has popped up Blessed Assurance I surrender all It Is Well with My Soul Your will be done tears so sweet to trust in Jesus I had the thought about what a friend we have in Jesus Take It to the Lord in prayer you know there's lots of lots of ideas here so at the moment I'm just in this kind of idea finding kind of Zone and what I'll often do is in Trello along with the possible order of service I'll say something like possible songs okay and impossible songs I'll say songs on borrowed for the sermon so what songs have we come up with or we saw it as well we saw actually I'll put that in I won't put that in capitals and then we've got it as well one piece like a river we had oceans that was a possibility um we we had way maker what else did we have um so we had the thing so I'll often go back and look at the themes again and just think through so we we sure uh we saw prayer we saw um a fear don't be afraid they were terrified fear not so there's a there's a thought fear not for I am with you that's That's a classic and so on this is just a kind of Discovery phase but we also had that new song um that we were talking about Christ Our Hope in life and there so that was one that was on our list and it's also on our new songs list so that's one that we might include again because we sang it last week and we've actually been doing it for the last few weeks which is another priority to include new songs that we've been doing so these are all just at the moment just creative thoughts now I'll come back into my possible order of service here and then I'll start to think through well what's going to actually happen in the service and um as I was thinking through response um I when I read the scriptures earlier I read that in NIV as well and talked about the disciples having hardened Hearts I think we saw in the cev they weren't uh they their minds were closed and so they had hardened hearts and so I was kind of going through thinking through the phrase well where might we end up with that as a sermon might speak about the softening of hearts or the need for our hardened Hearts to be softened and so I came up with the the response song which is a classic budget book I Surrender you're softening my heart to the knowledge of your love and we might um just see if that makes its way through so then I also think about all the other features it's school holidays and so I wanted to include the the special song Jesus strong and kind which is a song from cityolite that has a great um words in it and it's got a real repetitive idea that we can do with the kids so I thought we might do a kids segment um and just get the kids to help us sing that Jesus strong and kind um and then we're finishing the service with some baptisms Rosie Rosie Bowden and maybe another person so we've got to think about how we get from a response into a time of baptism think about the kinds of phases that we might need to move through as we run a worship service so typically people have things like fast and slow songs I tend to think not so much about fast and slow songs as much as moving from adoration to confession to Thanksgiving and to supplication so thinking about acts adoration confession Thanksgiving supplication as a way of working through our service so we might have some songs of praise and worship to start that are about God or God would we think about our scripture readings that have got to go in the scripture readings obviously have to happen before the sermon and we saw the scripture readings here so we've got Mark 6 45 to 56 and then an Old Testament reading Genesis 1 verse 1 to 10 has also been selected and that's because Genesis 1 1-10 finishes with God separating the waters and separating the land and God was in control of the water and so Jesus obviously walking on water is important so Mark 6 45-56 we're going to put in here and probably before the sermon Mark six verse 45 to 256 I think I said I'll double check Mark 6 45 to 56 and then Genesis 1 1-10 is also another scripture reading that's got to go in there so we've got Mark 6 45 56 and I think somewhere towards somewhere earlier we might have the other Old Testament reading one this one to ten and I was actually thinking on that list that we saw was God of Wonders and God of Wonders actually does reflect the the nature of the service we're thinking about Jesus walking on water but we've also got the reading of Jesus making the heavens and the Earth that John tells us that Jesus was in the beginning and he was the maker of heaven and Earth so we might actually have that early then we'll have this kid singing a little bit earlier but we might do something before we do God of Wonders before the scripture reading well I did scripture reading first I'll still think about that so we've got a response song I surrender now we've also got on the schedule that we're supposed to have a community in this service this could be a very big service with not too many um other features when you think about the fact that we've got to fit communion and baptism so um I think we might put the communion after the sermon it's a response of surrender and then follow with the baptisms to close the service out so we probably aren't going to want too many other features in here just a single response song giving you the baptism and Community coming out of responding to why surrender makes a lot of sense to me so I'll put the scripture reading immediately before so we've got the the kids Special Jesus strong strong and kind which um also connects to the the song Jesus Loves Me This I Know which would be a possibility so we're trying to think now about what else might be in the service we need obviously we need announcements that's a regular feature and that also mentions our offering and they're welcome so we might go welcome and announcements and then have the scripture reading and then we'll have God of Wonders and we need to think of some other parts so something old something new something borrowed something blue so there's something old we could consider I surrender as old and we can also consider I surrender as Something Borrowed that specifically for the service something new if we think of the new song that we've been doing which um we just mentioned was so over here um across our hope in life and death so I'll I'll put Christ Our Hope and life and death again that could come out of communion before the baptism or we can put it before the scripture reading we want to focus on Jesus so we don't want to just have an emphasis on God we want Jesus is Lord of all and so we're going to put Jesus in here so we'll put that immediately for the scripture reading and call it a song so that we can differentiate here wonders so what I'll then do is think okay what connects all this up so I've got a welcome and announcements we're going to have an Old Testament scripture reading and we'll have a time of prayer got the song God of Wonders we've got a song You're softening my heart I Surrender and we've got the song Christ Our Hope and life and death but of course we've got a lot fitting in communion that'll take about 110 minutes and baptism will take about 10 minutes um Pastor Keith's sermon will be about 30 minutes so there's 40 50 minutes there so we really wanted to be done in an hour and a half and at the at the outmost so welcome announcements won't take very long so two scripture readings they'll take you about five minutes each by the time you get up and get down so that's um 50 now 50 is down 60 minutes so we've got maybe three one two three songs um so now I would think about what's the what are we wanting to say about God what's the spirit of God been leading us through recently and I might look again at songs that we've sung recently so let's go back to songs we've sung recently sing I hope praise is rising king of glory what a beautiful name Christ Our Hope and life and death have faith in God um and we can also look at there's another board that is the full service archive from 2023 that we can look at the last few weeks if there's any benefit in looking at previous weeks so we've got the 17th of September was last week that was week before and we had ancient words because that was with the beheading of John the Baptist Here I Am to Worship Psalm 150 King Kings is he worthy so we've been seeing that and that's really lifted the congregations Focus to Christ so we might we might consider putting is he worthy in let's have a look so that would flow well either out of Christ Our Hope in life and death all God of Wonders we don't have too many but I think I'm going to put it here let's um do you feel the world is broken so we're going to put easyworthy in and then we've got God of Wonders and so we've got one two three four songs so five at the most is is um in a service that's so full especially if you're not going to have much talking you can do five songs we might have a second song that comes out of God of Wonders and the Genesis 1 verse 1 to 10 reading so let's just have a quick look at the Genesis 1 1-10 and see if that stimulates any thinking so Genesis 1 in the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth the Earth was Barren with no form of life it was under a roaring ocean covered with Darkness but the spirit of God was moving over the waters God said I command light to shine and light started shining God looked at the light and so it was good and he separated light from darkness and name the light day and the Darkness night evening came the morning and that was the first day and God said I commanded Dome to separate the water above it from the water below and that's what happened God made the diamond named its guy evening came the morning and that was the second day and then God said I command the water under the sky to come together in one place this is it and so there will be dry ground and that's what happened god named the dry ground land and he named the water ocean God looked at what he had done and said it was good so there's two ways that I immediately jump into from that I think we could do something like Lord you were good and your mercy endures forever which is a joyful song People of every nation and tribe from generation to generation we worship you you are good that's a great response to God looking at everything and seeing that it was good and he is a good God we could do you're a good good father we could do um good grace so there's so many things that might come out of that the other song that I thought of as we were just going through there um no it's just escaping me at the moment but it might come back to me so I'm just going to leave it now sometimes what I'll do is I'll I'll put some of this in and I'll think about it and then I'll think about what might connect well to that um I I did like the idea this is just a suggestion of um Lord you were good foreign so again we've got some some linking here the idea of the the Lord is good and we need to be declaring his praise as we've got Jesus strong and kind this is a song of um supplication when I am weak um I Jesus says I can come to him when I am when I have fear when I am struggling Jesus says I can come to him and so um we've got quite a diverse range of songs here and I'm just gonna make that so if you think about the kids special as being part of the part of the singing of the church I've actually got one two three four five six songs here which is plenty we don't need any more in fact we probably could have less so um I'm really having two songs here just because it takes time for people to come in and also time for people to focus their attention on Christ we've got the scripture reading early and so um we want to make sure that that there's time for people to actually get the content of that and if they miss the scripture reading because they're coming in late they'll get it through these songs about God being the Creator and what God made was good and that God is good then we put our focus on the kids and and the kids contributing to the worship and we're going to sing that we'll get the kids to sing the phrase Jesus says he will come to me and or I can come to him so we've got um two two key phrases um I can come to him is what the kids will sing and then we finish with the congregations and he will come to me um Jesus came on the cross and so then that points us to Christ Our Hope and life and death and is he worthy so we've got some Old Testament we've got some new testament we've got some some goddess father creator sustainer of Life provider of righteousness and then we've got to focus on Jesus Christ Our Hope in life and death and he is the one who is going to open the scroll and and reveal the hidden mysteries and and then we've got the scripture reading from Mark six December Pastor Keith we'll finish with a a song of surrender you're softening my heart followed by communion which will be short um and lead into baptisms it may even be a baptism uh kind of talk around the communion table and then we'll have our baptisms so this of course is a draft this is not a final order of service and there may be some other thinking that comes into it often I'll talk to Pastor Steve we'll have um other ideas come up I'll talk to the people in the worship team and what they can do so we'll have cello that's a feature instrument this week so we've already got a cello Feature Part for Christ Our Hope in life and death um I'm pretty sure we've got that crazy worthy as well so we would have to find Shallow Parts perhaps for God of Wonders and Lord your good and Jesus strong and kind will just be a a special by itself so we won't get the whole team to do that that'll probably just be me and then the song at the end I Surrender will have to find cello for that so I'm thinking through lots of things as you can see there's trying to combine the elements that are prepared in advance or planned for this service and also thinking through something old something new something borrowed something blue thinking through adoration confession Thanksgiving and supplication we've got songs of adoration um we've got songs of Supplication that we can come to Jesus it's a song of finding him as our strength we've got Christ Our Hope and life and death it's a sign of truth that declares truths about Christ we've got is he worthy he is worthy to open the scroll to he is worthy of all glory and honor and praise so that song of worship we've got songs of surrender so I Surrender you softening my heart as a song of confession to the knowledge of Your Love opening my eyes you light the way we're asking God to lead us and confessing so so there's all those elements in there something old we've got to surrender something new we've got Christ Our Hope and life and death Something Borrowed I Surrender and I think even um thinking about the idea of God of Wonders is coming straight out of the um the Old Testament reading and and the Lord is good and something blue that touches the heart I really believe that Izzy Worthy is really touching the heart of our congregation at the moment it's a song that really just inspires and draws us into the very presence of God so as we put all these things together um this is just early planning but it gives you an idea as to how we go about it so the next thing I would do is I would actually let the team who are on this week have some idea as to what um what the possible songs might be and so I usually do that through Facebook in Facebook Messenger I'll go to Facebook Messenger and I'll have a chat open and I'll make a chat with the team for this week and you can see the team in the Trello we go back to rostered team we've got myself Neville Ollie Katie Dave Cade Nui Anita so I'll just make a um so a Neville oops I'll try that again I'll get here I'll go and then I'll go I'll go Ollie I'll go Katie uh Dave Caden and really and data right and now what I'll do is in that chat oops I'll say um so I'll tell them here's a suggested list of songs that we'll sing from and then I'll go to this um possible order of service and I'll grab the songs and I'll delete the bits to that part of this so we've got God of Wonders Lord you are good to get a strong kind Christ our hopes and then I'll take out the bits that weren't songs so we've got ta wonders you are good we've got the kids Special we've gone priced our open life and death we've got issue Worthy and we've got I Surrender yourself in my heart and then what I'll do just to help them familiarize themselves with their ears I'll just go and find YouTubes of the most common versions or the special versions if we actually have some special versions We want to do we've already thought about them I'll find YouTubes of those so let's just do that go to YouTube just gives out at least a general um starting place of the songs so let's go God of Wonders [Music] that's a fairly straightforward version that I know well so I'll throw that in just as a way for them to familiarize themselves with it if I found if I found a piano version or one that would be closer to the one we're going to do if I could throw that up here so we've got a lyric video Lord you were good which is okay so at least they can prepare by numbers so so here we go Jesus loves me which is um [Music] this is actually a great version of this was from the Philippine Survivor Network quite a possibilities of trafficking [Music] okay and then the next one we've got is Chrysler hope and life and death and the getting uh well let's I don't want to do the Getty version I want to do the papa version so that's this one um [Music] so this just gives us a basic starting place and then is he Worthy what's happening and the Andrew Peterson version is the one I like [Music] do you feel the world is broken so I think do you feel the Shadows deeper [Music] so um there it is I Surrender [Music] please [Music] let's go on and that's the response home so at least we've got a bit of a selection of what the songs are and how they're going to go and I may still adjust this sort of service I might think yeah it's too much because it probably is a little bit too much but I like to start with the fullest version of what we might do and we can curl as we rehearse and work out what doesn't work and then what I'll do is so the team can see all of that there so as we go through the week so it's only early in the week as we go through the week we will update and adjust this draft and it will become the final version so at the moment it stands we'll start with welcome and announcements have our scripture reading from Genesis 1 1-10 which will form a call to worship go into our songs God of Wonders and you are good then we'll call the kids forward and have a special time with the kids and then we'll go into Christ Our Hope and life and death and is he Worthy how about scripts reading and sermon I will respond to the sermon possibly with the song I surrender you softening my heart Pastor Keith may have some suggestions to what else he would like to do there and then we'll have communion leading into baptism and it'll be a full service so that just gives you a little bit of insight into how I go about it I hope this has been helpful um obviously it's not a one size fits all but at least you've seen it done bless you and brother now
