The event was known as GRB 080319B, an enormous gamma-ray burst created by one of the most powerful explosions in the universe.
For a brief moment, the blast became [music] so unbelievably bright that its visible light could actually be seen from Earth [music] without a telescope. But here's where things get truly mind-blowing. The explosion happened roughly 7.5 [music] billion light-years away. That means the light reaching our eyes in 2008 had been traveling across space for billions of years. When those photons [music] began their journey, Earth didn't even exist.
