Late that night, a motorcyclist ended up on the pavement on South University Drive after a crash that shattered his leg. Witnesses nearby watched a green jeep swing left right in front of him, giving him no time to break. The Jeep's driver did not stick around. He took off while the victim lay on the asphalt, covered in sand and waiting for an ambulance to show up.

You have any neck or back pain? >> Nope. >> The victim is identified as Juan David Gasper Gonzalez. He was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital with a compound fracture to his right tibia and fibula that required surgery. Shortly afterwards, he would be intubated and put on a ventilator. That medical picture is exactly what got the case classified as a crash involving serious bodily injury. >> So, we're both driving down here. >> What lane were you guys in? >> Um, I was in this third lane right here and he was in the middle lane. >> Okay. >> I see the car.

The file makes it clear it was standard protocol triggered anytime a call involves an officer from another agency. That protocol would put Manfred under a different kind of scrutiny than any other neighbor calling in a dinged up bumper.

Video from Tijana Taxi Restaurant shows the Jeep pulling out around 8:25 p.m. with no visible damage. Footage from the apartment complex shows the same vehicle rolling in a short time later, already missing its right tail light and with a dented rear bumper. Neither camera reviewed at that point actually caught the moment of impact. Before the arrest warrant is issued, investigators had already pulled pieces of the Jeep from the University Drive scene, including tail light fragments that match the one missing from Manfred's vehicle. With that physical evidence stacked on top of the surveillance footage and witness statements, Manfred was arrested March 12th of 2026, just one day after Lauder Hill cut him loose on two charges.

Leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury and giving false information to police about the commission of a crime. The lead charge, leaving the scene, is a seconddegree felony under Florida law that carries up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. A conviction triggers a driver's license revocation of at least three years, plus restitution to the victim unless the court finds a clear reason not to order it.

Florida's sentencing score sheet ranks the offense at level six, and it could bump up a level if the court determines the victim qualifies as a vulnerable road user for riding a motorcycle, something that's still unresolved in the public record. The second charge, giving false information to police about the commission of a crime, is a first-degree misdemeanor that carries up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. On top of investigation costs and possible restitution, both of those charges at their maximum put together and ran consecutively.

The theoretical exposure comes to 16 years, though that's only the legal ceiling and not a forecast of what the suspect would actually get.
