How to Make Your Life Feel Like Autumn 🍂 the ultimate fall starter pack transcript

[music] I know that you're mad. [music] You guys, are you feeling what I'm feeling? Yes, fall is [music] a date on the calendar, but I believe that autumn is a feeling. It is atmosphere. It is vibes. [music] And I'm feeling that pull that autumn has on me more and more every day. One of the nights this week, it actually felt slightly chilly. And my heart leapt because it's coming. I am so ready for You've Got Mail and [music] to be carrying around fall books for Gilmore Girls and Saturday morning Scooby-Doo.

I've just pulled out my pumpkin pajamas. Today, I'm not going to [music] be sharing my fall TBR, but I'm going to be giving you yours. I'm going to try and help you discover what your fall decor [music] style may be this year. Meet Mavis. We're going to be talking about which fall familiar you might want to find for [music] yourself this year. I know it sounds childish, but I don't believe in childish. I just believe in fun.

We're going to be talking [music] themed fall weeks instead of a bucket list. There are also a few physical things that you can use right now to give yourself [music] an immediate fall. Everything we need to throw ourselves head first into the best time of year. Welcome autumn people. You are among friends. Let's proceed with the autumn preparations. [music] Okay, everyone, get your library cards out and get a notebook and some paper.

We're going to be talking books to read to get you in the mood for fall. Every [music and singing] now and then something [music and singing] comes along. There are going to be books for a variety of different readers. [music] So, we've got spooky, we've got very cozy middle-grade, YA adult, but ultimately I want the book to be able to transport [music] you to a world that feels like it exists during fall. Oh my gosh, I don't even know where to start.

I love all of these books. so much. This roundup is maybe my favorite that I've ever done. Starting with Truly Madly Sheeply. If you've been watching my video, I've just got to I kind of wanted this to look like the vibes of when you're at a book fair and you can see the books looking at you. Okay, I was going to say if you've been watching my videos for a while, you have probably seen this as a prop in multiple videos because the cover is so [music] incredibly beautiful.

If Nancy Drew was maybe like nine or 10 years old and she was going back to school, this is what I imagine Nancy Drew would pick up. This has leaf peeping cider donut days. There's a bakery and they sell apple cider donuts on any given day of the week and you never know what day it's going to be. There's a pumpkin festival, maple creamies. If you've been to New England during fall, you know there's a dog named Miss Marple.

And here you don't have buttermilk pancakes [music] for breakfast, but you have them as breakfast dessert. I love the idea of breakfast dessert. There's so many little quirky details that make it feel very stars holo coded, but I feel like I should have started with the fact that this is a YA cozy mystery. Truly, our main character [music] reminds me so much of Nancy Drew. She has a little group with her friends. They're called the Pumpkin Falls Private Eyes and they're amateur slleuth.

And this is New England fall, all things cozy, nothing spooky, all wrapped up in book form. It's It's so good. I want to throw it at you and just read it. Anyway, I can't spend this long on every book or else we're going to be here. This video is going to be like an hour long. I don't know. Maybe it already is. This is, you know, it's good when I am at a loss for words. This book has my heart. This is The Near Witch by VE E Schwab.

If I could sum this book up into one sentence, it would be, if early fall was a book, it would be this book. Thank you to Liv from Liv's Library because she has been raving about this book for years and it's been on my TBR for about that long and I finally picked it up this year. Oh my gosh. If [music] you like Cat and Casper from the movie Casper, you're going to love Lexi and Cole. This book feels like being told an old folk tale handed down from generations by candlelight as the wind whips outside the windows.

It's set in an isolated village that feels very much reminiscent of the village. There are young children disappearing at night and a mysterious boy that shows up. He seems to vanish with the wind, but everyone seems to be scared of him. And [music] there are two elderly witches who live on the outskirts of the village. They remind me somehow of a Disney cartoon that [music] doesn't exist, but that type of like nostalgic oldtimey Disney cartoon.

Imagine what two witches would look like. That's how I pictured them. Nobody does atmosphere like V. E. Schwab, and she just hit it out of the ballpark with this. Just emphasizing one more time that if you like Cat and Casper and their [music] sweet, sweet little romance from Casper, Lexi and Cole, I'm just going to That's all I'm going to say. This was incredible because I read this book right here, Strange Practice by Vivian Shaw backtoback with Truly Madly Shapely and The Near Witch and it was just the most incredible run of books.

You know those original creature features from the early like 1930s. Imagine they all live [music] in London and they have a doctor because monsters need doctors too. This is a story about Greta Helsing, who, you guessed it, is a descendant of Van Helsing himself from Dracula, and she is a doctor to monsters and the undead. Someone starts murdering monsters and humans alike all across London, and Greta gets pulled into this mystery.

Think a little bit like Dracula meets Sherlock Holmes. A little bit of like a cozy British mystery and a little bit of Doctor Who energy. Would not classify this as cozy, though. There are some scenes that were a [clears throat] bit much. One of my favorite things about this book is that the found family is already found at the beginning of the book. So, you have this established group of Greta and a vampire and a ghoul.

Their banter and friendship is absolutely everything to me. I would truly read an entire book of just Greta's day-to-day life of treating monsters in London. I honestly got a little bit bored in the middle when there was more action going on. I just wanted to go back to the vampire's mansion and sit by the fire and talk to him about tea and the books he was reading. Next, this is September by Rosman Piltchure. This feels like being invited to go to a dance in the Scottish Highlands.

Here you're going to find beautiful house parties and dinners and dancing, complicated family relationships, the changing of leaves because [music] this does start in summer and slowly transitions to September. The second half of the book is set during September and the description of autumn in Scotland is completely transportive. It's 550 pages and [music] I read this in one weekend and was missing them so much upon closing the book.

The [music] best way I can describe this is it feels like a Nancy Meyers film set in the Scottish Highlands. Now, these next three are ones that I have not actually finished yet. One of them was very intentional and the other two are ones I just started that I never planned on including on this list, but as I was reading them, I thought how perfect they were and how I just had to recommend them. The first one is A Fatal Feast at Bramsford Manor by Darcy Hannah.

Have any of you seen the Clue movie with Tim Curry and how ridiculous and kind of wacky and quirky it is? This book could be its sister in book form. It's about a girl named Bunny who is a cook and she's been working on this show behind the scenes, but turns out as fall is arriving, her boss has given her her own show and she loves fall but she does not love anything spooky. So when she hears that this show is about going to Scotland and other haunted locations, learning about what food is famous and known in those parts of the world and then cooking up that food, having a ghost hunter team come in and using that food kind of as bait to get the ghost to appear so that they can communicate.

But it turns into a murder mystery. [music] And Bunny has a secret. She might just be able to see ghosts. I think sometimes in fall you just need a light entertaining read and that's exactly what this has been so far. This is one [music] that I knew I wanted to include, but as I started reading it, it broke my heart that I was reading over the summer, I knew I had to wait and read it during fall. I was thinking maybe we could read it together.

I do have a book club on Patreon, but I think it'd be so fun if we all started this sometime this fall and then I can give my review of it at the very end of the season. >> [music] >> This is a chunky book, so I know it's one that I just want to slowly read all throughout fall. This is The Woman in White by Wilky [music] Collins. It was the last day of July. The long hot summer was drawing to a close. And we, the weary pilgrims of the London pavement, were beginning to think of the cloudless shadows on the cornfields and the autumn breezes on the seashore.

The weary pilgrims of the London pavement. The cloudless shadows on the cornfields. Yes, I will take almost 600 pages of that writing. I can't think of a better classic for fall than a Victorian. [music] Like, it's like the 1860s version of a psychological thriller. And finally, I started this book yesterday and I I have to tell you about it. I need to put like a montage here of the vibes so you can see why I'm loving this so much.

This is How to Solve Your Own Murder by Kristen Parin. Within this first chapter, we see Annie Adams talking about how she shops library book sales for Agatha Christie books so that she [music] can use them for research because she is an aspiring mystery novel writer. She dresses like a Victorian ghost. Her words, not mine. She is cleaning up the basement of her eccentric great aunt. This is so fun because we get dual timelines.

One is in the 1960s where we follow the eccentric aunt. She goes to this fortune teller/s psychic [music] and is told that she is going to be murdered. She gets all these weird clues like when you hold the queen and your the palm of your hand [music] that's when everything will be your downfall and don't trust the bird. The bird will betray you. One day she is actually murdered and that's not a spoiler. It's on the back.

It happens at the very beginning. So now it's Annie's job to figure out who murdered her aunt [music] and if her aunt was actually on to something based on the clues she already had. and I just had to throw this in and share it with you guys because I'm loving it so incredibly much. Now, I think seven books is a great place to start, but I fear it's nowhere near as many as I would like to have, and maybe some of you would like more recommendations as well.

So, I was thinking, leave your fall book recommendation in the comments. Just one that you have been wanting to scream from the [music] rooftops. Maybe one that's underrated, underappreciated, that you just need people to read. And [music] then we can all write these incredibly long fall reading lists together. Go to the library and check out ones that look interesting. I think it's safe to say we can consider our fall bookshelves officially stacked.

Stacked or stocked. Cuz books are stacked. But also they'll be stocked because they'll be full. [music] There is a [music] very specific makeup style that women in fall movies have that I am determined to recreate. It's not really done and it doesn't look like a full face of makeup. Their cheeks look like they've [music] been kissed by the cold. It looks like they have some makeup on, but it looks so natural. And because I don't want a full face for this, [music] this is when I love reaching for my tinted skin care from Typology, who is so kindly sponsoring today's video.

I've been reading The Unknown [music] by Riley Sager. Last night, I was reading it until 1:00, but then it got really spooky.

I was reading this line. It says, "The scratching returns in the middle of the of the night. I know because I'm wide awake when it begins. [music] I lie in tar thick darkness, straining to pinpoint its location to no avail. It's everywhere. It's very, very good. Now, this is the part that actually [music] makes me look like I have encountered cold weather. This is their tinted [music] lip oils. I'm obsessed with these.

These are my favorite typology products if I had to choose [music] one. It has vitamin E, squaline, and hoba oil. So, it gives my lips a little bit of color while still making them feel hydrated. And I love that it's not tacky. I'm going to [music] use black cherry today, but I also loved their new glazed chestnut color. This is black cherry and this is glazed chestnut. I'm going to start with the base of black cherry and then top it with a little bit of glazed chestnut.

Something I personally love to do is to use the lip oil as a blush. And actually, I'm gonna try to put it further down on my cheek because I think that gives the illusion of cold weather more so than during the summer, you'd be getting sunburnt this direction. But in the winter and in the fall when it's cold from the wind, you get red more [music] so down here. I always put some on my nose. My nose is one of the first places to turn red when I'm cold.

And then this is part of the routine that I've been implementing recently that I love. These are Typology's limited edition rose glow drops. Do you like multiple different fall decor styles, but you're not really sure what it's called or even how to look for items that feel like what you're interested in? In our house, we decorate each different room with a different theme because I love a theme.

One year I did a practical magic kitchen, a dark academia fall semester bedroom, and a [music] Molly Weasley decorating the burrow for fall living room. And when you know a theme or at least a vague idea of a style that you like, it makes thrifting, antiquing more intentional because you know what you're looking for. But instead of thinking about what fall decor style you like, I want you to think about what kind of house you want to live in.

For example, do you want to live in the burrow or do you want to live in the Victorian practical [music] magic house? Do you want it to feel like you just got home from school in the early '9s and your mom is taking out the Halloween decorations? [music] Or do you not want anything spooky at all and you just want an apartment that looks like it's out of the Norah Efron montage? Do you see where I'm going with this? Like imagine where you want to live and then you can curate for the feeling of it.

So, I've written a list out of autoutumnel decor styles, and I thought we could treat this as kind of like a little quiz in a magazine, like what's your autumn decor style? There's a very good chance he might not be any of these, but they might give you a little inspiration. Starting [music] with Y2K witchy. For me, this is Sabrina Spelman 100%. Not so much practical magic here. No, we're thinking purple velvet cushions, celestial stars, candles everywhere, stained glass, Tiffany style lamps.

Next, I don't really love this name. I want to come up with something better, but I kind of have storybook folk autumn. I'm imagining lots of apples and baskets. [music] This decor style feels very early fall and not Halloween with mums and stacks of corn plates that look like they came from your Halloween loving aunt. Quilts with mustard yellows, hunter greens, some rusty reds and oranges, things that feel homemade.

It feels very whimsical. If you're someone who mourns the elementary school Halloween party in second grade, I think your theme may be '90s after school Halloween. >> [music] >> This, I imagine, is like you just got home from school. It's like 1997, 1998, right on the cusp of the 2000s. Your mom is taking out the plastic jacko'lantern. There are paper decorations taped in the window, candy corn colors, and black cats and lots of lights strung, very amber hued.

I have an entire Pinterest board just dedicated to this theme, and it's the biggest board on my Pinterest this fall. I'm obsessed with this theme this year. I don't think I'm going to be decorating in this style, but I love the feeling of [music] it. Next, I have Autumn and Potsfield. This is inspired by Over the Garden Wall, the best autominal TV show. There's more of an emphasis on darker colors and lots of pumpkins, lots of hay and lanterns and old wood, corn stalks, not even necessarily Halloween.

We're thinking more harvest and kind of forest inspired. I think adding in elements of moss and dried leaves ties it all together. Then I have the Victorian witch's house. Basically the practical magic house. This [music] is botanical, a bit more romantic. Dried herbs and [music] flowers, dark wood, lace curtains, botanical prints and apothecary bottles, lots of taper candles [music] and candalabbras, green glass and amber colors and old books.

I think of it as like romantically witchy. Next is Norah Efron's September Apartment. I've never met a Norah Efron film that I didn't want to steal the aesthetic from. This is probably the most minimal when it comes to actually having fall decor because this is more about the feeling of coziness. I'm imagining lamps in every corner, bookshelves and books stacked along the side of [music] the couch, a fresh flower bouquet from the farmers market, copper pans in the kitchen with cookies baking in the oven, warm woods, and lots of framed artwork, maybe a couple pumpkins on each side of a fireplace.

It's beautiful because it's warm and inviting and cozy. And it's a great option if you don't have that much fall decor and you don't want to go spend money on stuff. You can go a long way with a few intentionally placed pieces that focus more on creating coziness rather than look, it's pumpkin spice fall. Next, I have an early 1990s New England fall catalog. I was thinking about when I was younger, sometimes I would see LLBAN cataloges, [music] and that's where this idea stemmed from.

Lots of plaid baskets of firewood, wool, and tartan, [music] and some dried wreaths. It's kind of like a mixture between preppy and country. If you follow Keel James Patrick, his Instagram account feels very much like this theme. And then I have cozy mystery autumn. You know those covers of cozy mystery books? That's what inspired this. There's always books and pens and a lot of the times the stories are about writers or something literary.

There's got to be tea. There's got to be something brewing on the stove like some homemade soup. Has that hint of an English cottage. and murder, but cozy. A desk beautifully decorated with stationery and a reading lamp and some orange and yellow roses. A little bit like Molly Weasley, but a little bit more put together. I'm a huge Adams family girl, so I had to make one inspired by Morticia. So, I came up with Morticia's morbid manner.

I love a good alliteration. Morticia is incredible inspiration because the Adams family, we think dark, we think cobwebs, we think black. But our girl Morticia is also romantic. She loves her roses. She loves her floral sofas. It's beautiful, but it's dark at the same time. And I love that. So, I'm thinking elegant [music] Halloween. White gourds, black painted pumpkins, silver candlesticks with a dark, deep blood red candle, ravens, black lace, [music] dark florals.

But of course, you have to have roses somewhere. Maybe like old Victorian portraits. Anything that feels very darkly beautiful and romantic [music] and a bit macob. And then in a completely different direction, I have Luke's diner kitchen. [music] I love this because you can see it so perfectly. A no cell phone sign. Blue. He has a blue island and blue cabinets. You could take your liberties with that. I just love that that is a color you could pull from Luke's mugs or mugs that just feel like they're ones that Luke would have. maple syrup and pastries.

You always have to have pastries stocked in the kitchen somewhere, which I think is kind of fun. You could always try to have a fresh pastry on the counter at all times. [music] And we all know Luke isn't a huge fan of autumn, so you don't have to go all out with the fall decor. It's more about making it feel like a cozy diner in a New England town. But I would definitely get a candle that smells like coffee or pancakes or maple syrup.

I love this one that I got from Amber and Oak. This smells exactly how I imagined Luke's [music] Diner would smell. It's so good. I want to eat it. I want to eat it so bad. And obviously, you do not have to pick just one of these. You could pick multiple. You can combine the coziness of Molly Weasley's Burrow with the tea and stationery from the small town cozy mystery. I do also just love the idea of a pumpkin spice house.

That's what I call it, where everything is just fall and a tummal and warm and cozy. My hope is that it just helps you kind of get a bit of a direction instead of just thinking, "Okay, I want to decorate my house for fall." and then going to the thrift store and just grabbing whatever looks like fall and bringing it home. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, but sometimes having a little bit of a direction can help [music] you look for specific items.

Ultimately, I hope that you can just find whatever version of fall makes you the most happy, whether that be a curated theme or just a few pumpkins and some candles and just go and make [music] that for yourself. It does not have to be anything big and fancy and spectacular for it to feel warm and cozy and you because that's what's most important. I have an assignment for you this fall and [music] I'm going to need you to trust me on this one.

But I think you should get yourself a fall familiar because hear me out, okay? [music] We put charms on our bags. We buy cute phone cases. We drink out of mugs shaped like little mini pumpkins. And this is basically just that. So, meet Mavis. She is my fall familiar this year. Her qualifications include excellent [music] taste in Halloween movies. She adds whimsy to absolutely everywhere we go. People do look at me, but they smile, which I think is a [music] win.

So, here's my definitive list of a great place to find one for yourself. Definitely Build-A-Bear, Jelly Cat, [music] maybe one of your childhood toys. Oh my gosh, now I'm thinking of Toy Story. Or you could rescue a little creature from the [music] thrift store. You don't need one. Like, your life will function absolutely the same if without one. But I dare you to tell me that your trip to the library isn't more fun with this little face sticking [music] out of your bag.

I know we've all probably seen those lists on Pinterest of fall movies to [music] watch to get you in the fall spirit. the classics like Practical Magic, You've Got Mail, we love them. We're going to rewatch them every year. After night after night after night of watching so many fall films, I feel like I've created [music] the perfect little stack for us this year. Some are cozy, some are slightly unhinged, some are perfect to be watched on a brisk September afternoon, and some require a thunderstorm for viewing. >> [music] >> starting with Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost.

Even if you don't typically sit down and watch Scooby-Doo movies as an adult, trust me on this. Scooby and the gang go to this beautiful auto atominal New England quaint little town. You just want to see fall foliage all over your screen. [music] They're there during a harvest festival. There are pumpkins and cobblestone streets and old brick buildings. [music] There's an author that is known for his paranormal spooky books and I think it's supposed to kind of [music] be like a fictional Stephen King.

He lives in this mansion and he's voiced by Tim Curry. >> I wrote all of my early novels here. Now I spend most of my time in Europe, but I come back once a year to recharge my batteries. H. It's a masterpiece. There's this old witch legend. So, a lot of tourists come here to ghost hunt and [music] then the Hex Girls show up. It is so good. I could go on and on and on. Now, if you're someone who craves old black and white movies [music] as soon as the sun starts setting earlier, or if you're wanting to get more into golden age Hollywood films, but you're not sure where to start, I have the perfect recommendation [music] for you.

It's called The Uninvited. specifically the one from 1944, not the newer version. This is my favorite ghost story right up there with Casper. The atmosphere is palpable. It has this beautiful grand mansion perched [music] on these cliffs by the seaside. It literally feels like you've been transported into [music] this historical world. Like you're staying at this manor and you are experiencing these creepy things right along with the characters.

[music] It's part ghost story and a part mystery. I highly recommend putting this on if you want your world to feel [music] like the first cold and rainy night of autumn. Oh, I wish I could watch this again for the first [music] time. Next, if you want a film that feels like the film equivalent of a brisk autumn day, and if you like Over the Garden Wall and folk horror, I think you would love The Village. To me, it feels beautiful but unsettling, strange [music] and romantic at all at the same time.

You get these clashes of [music] beautiful scenery. It takes place in a little village. There are homemade dresses and dancing, but then [music] you also get this feeling and sense of dread and you know that something is lurking out in the woods. It's like kind of a spooky that's like just [music] nearly there. The whole movie is color graded so beautifully. I'm obsessed with it. I know the ending is quite polarizing.

Some people really don't like it. I personally didn't mind [music] it at all. I did not see it coming. So, if you want a movie with a twisty ending [music] and something that's going to make you feel a little bit uncomfy, this is your fall movie. But this next one, I apologize if you've heard me talk about this before, but I will continue to shout its praises from the rooftops because I feel like it doesn't get the recognition [music] that it deserves.

This is the ultimate fall comfort film. This is what I watch every year [music] to kick off autumn, the odd life of Timothy Green. If you like films like Fly Away Home and of Green Gables, or any of those kind of nostalgic, magical family films, I think you'll love The Odd Life of Timothy Green. There are golden and red leaves everywhere. [music] There's a quaint little town, school supplies, pencils. Timothy's dad works at a pencil factory.

It's about a husband and wife who have been wanting a child of their own, but they've been struggling with infertility until one day a boy [music] named Timothy joins their family in the most unexpected but magical way. I don't know how else to convince you. Please, please just give it a chance. [music] It is a little bit sad at times, but has a happy ending. I can promise you that. And the soundtrack [music] is incredible. >> Books, pencils.

Oh, there's a box of tissues on the bottom. It says band-aids. There's a whole first aid kit. Actually, just >> have a great day. That's too much pressure. >> Have the day you have. >> Look at his little legs. I don't believe it. >> Oh, believe it, sister. For years, I've been listening to how perfect your kids are. But look at that. That kid is mine. I am the mom of that. [music] >> Get that kid. >> Moving to a different type of vibe.

If you like Clue and the Adams family, anything where some of the people are horrible but like fabulously dressed at the same time and the house is like its own character in the film. It's a little bit absurd and strange, but also you can't look away from it. I cannot recommend Death Becomes Her more. It stars Meryill Streep and Goldie Han and they're fighting over this man who just happens [music] to be Bruce Willis and at the same time they're kind of obsessed with doing whatever possible to [music] age backwards and gain back that beauty that came with their youth.

It gets weirder and wackier as it goes on and by the end you're just like what am I watching? But it also is great because the this mansion [music] is in a world where it's perpetually rainy and thunderstorming outside. So this is perfect for a [music] stormy night or if it's not storming outside and you want to feel like that, bring it into your home, I would say watch this movie. Now on a different note, if you lean more [music] Agatha Christie Hitchcock murder mysteries, this is such a good one.

[music] It's an Alfred Hitchcock film called Dial M for Murder. It stars Grace Kelly, Ray Miland, and Robert Cummings. Almost all of the film takes place in [music] this beautiful London apartment. It follows a retired tennis player who finds out about his wife's affair [music] and plots her murder, which is a crazy jump to make, you know, not talking to her about it, divorcing her. On the night that it's supposed to happen, Grace Kelly does something completely unexpected, [music] and you're glued to your seat the whole time wondering how in the heck is he going to get away with this?

It really kind of makes you think it through with the characters and [music] you're you just are dying to know how it ends. This next one is for us hopeless romantics. If your favorite fall film is Twilight and if you want yearning and you also love Brahm Stoker's Dracula, I'm begging you to watch this. This is Dracula from 2005. This is [music] romantic Dracula. We've never seen Dracula the way we see him in this film.

I never loved Dracula. He was never a fictional crush, but that changed with this film. >> I understand. I regard. >> No. [laughter] No. They're trying. God, the way you came. What are you doing? What are you doing? What are you doing? You can jump up. It's much too high. >> No. I forbade you from getting yourself under my window. >> So, you'd [clears throat] like me to die farther away? Yes. No. Yes. Get off the [laughter] balcony immediately. >> The way that the director took this perspective of Dracula, it's less like boo and scary [music] and more like I have crossed centuries across time and space and I will find you in every lifetime.

That's this film. [music] This definitely has its moments and there's a little bit of gore, but my definition of a little could be different than yours. So maybe look up the parents guide for [music] this film and you can see exactly what is in it and whether that would be something you want to watch or not. Jared loves it. Maybe watch it [music] with your husband, your significant other and watch it with anybody actually.

Okay, now completely completely going in a different direction again. Legally blonde. Stay with me. Hear me out. This film is one of the best back to school films ever. [music] We've got Harvard brick building school campus. Lots of [music] tweed sweaters and cardigans and blazers and studying. You know how You've Got Mail kind of makes [music] you want to make your own bouquet of sharpened pencils. I feel like Legally Blonde makes me want to buy some notebooks and get on a treadmill and read through a fall curriculum and study while [laughter] I work out and go to the library and become like an academic girl even though I'm not in school anymore.

If you haven't seen Legally Blonde before, take this as your sign. or if you just haven't seen it in a long time, add it to your rotation this year because it's really on point with all of the fall atmosphere and [music] vibes. This last one might be a little bit controversial for it being a fall film or not because you could definitely watch this as a summerween film, but Jared and I personally watch it as a transitional film between summer and fall.

I think you would love this if you love the Goonies or that specific episode of The Twilight Zone called The Monsters Are Doo on Maple Street. any type of film where there's a group of neighbors that kind of get together and decide that something very suspicious is going on with [music] someone in the neighborhood. You've absolutely got to watch The BBS starring Tom Hanks. Carrie Fischer plays his wife. It also has Cory Fieldman who actually was in the Goonies.

He played Mouth. We see Tom Hanks become slowly convinced by his neighbor that his new neighbors are up to something suspicious in [music] this kind of crumbling dilapidated house. Every night there are these lights in the basement that get really bright and really loud and they see them digging what looks like graves in the backyard. It does a good job of making you wonder, are they right and crazy stuff is going on in that house or are they just making this all up?

At its heart, it's a comedy. I would say maybe a little bit of like a dark comedy. It's just so fun. I highly, highly recommend adding this to your fall watch list this year, especially as we're on the cusp of autumn, but we're still technically in summer. I think this one would be great to kick off the season with. >> Are you sure we took the right turn, Shaggy? >> Sure. We took this road and turned to the right. >> No wonder we're going to before.

It was a small town by small cries of laughter and poison. It was Halloween. was a contest. Pips's rent was passed up to he had away with the vision is seldom to be seen. Broad Lake was a afternoon. [music] >> In all the countryside, there was nothing to equal Americ. But there was no trace of the school master. Right. Sing a few play kits. I'll hold the bar. If you watched my summering like it's 2006 video, then you probably know what this board is.

And I'm so excited to say that she is back for fall. And better than ever, I've added one little new feature to each of the weeks, a journal prompt. And if you don't know what I'm talking about, instead of a bucket list, I come up with weekly themes for each week in the season. For example, during fall, it could be vampire week or Y2K witchy week or the Halloween special week. That way, instead of having an overall bucket list for the whole season, each week is almost like its own little mini season within fall.

[music] The week of August 16th through the 22nd. This week I've called bouquet of sharpened pencils week. Our inspiration for this week is watching You've Got Mail, of course. Make your fall reading list. [music] Have an AOL evening. This is basically my way of saying have a fall back to school themed analog evening. Really, you just want to do [music] anything that you think Kathleen Kelly would do on an evening in early September.

And then one morning, wake up earlier than usual and go for a Kathleen [music] Kelly neighborhood morning walk. And then you could make yourself a bouquet of sharpened pencils, which would be amazing. Or something a little bit easier, you could buy yourself a bouquet of orange and yellow flowers. And lastly, our whimsical journal prompt for this week is [music] things that you would put into a bouquet that are not roses, flowers, or pencils.

I think I [music] would absolutely do a bouquet of books. Could you do a bouquet of cats without harming them if you could? Yeah, that would that would be my number one. The next week is August 23rd through the 29th. And this week is the autumn issue week. for this. I'm imagining I'm in like an early 2000's romcom [music] and I work at a magazine and we are working on our September issue. So, what books are we recommending and [music] what outfits do we think we're going to be wearing and what's going to be your signature scent?

This is your own personal magazine. [music] It's your autumn issue. So, we're going to start off with choosing your signature fall drink of 2026. You could even test out some recipes. Choose your favorite one and that's going to be your signature [music] drink. What about like caramel apple matcha? I don't know. There's so many things. Next, create your September closet. Get rid of all the sweaters that you're not going to wear anymore.

Donate them. Hang up your favorites. Also want to decide on our autumn decor [music] style. Next, you want to remember one thing that you loved from an autumn during your past that you kind of forgotten about and bring it back. And then, if you're a pumpkin spice girly, it's time to drink your first pumpkin spice of the season. For the journal prompt, I have two. I can't decide which one [music] that I like better. The first one is what's in and out for autumn because that feels very Y2K fall magazine.

Or I also like the idea of a personal fall forecast. Like what book do you think you're going to love most this fall out of all the books that you have on your reading list? And I just think that's so fun cuz then you can look back at it at the end of fall and see what you were right about and what you were wrong about. Next week we have is from August 30th through September [music] 5th. This week is Stars Hol Autumn Festival because we're in September and we are celebrating.

So, first on [music] the list is watching the most autominal Gilmore Girls episode you can find, which I think is season 1, episode 7, Kiss and [music] Tell, or season 3, episode 9, which is the deep fried Thanksgiving episode. That one is also very good. On the menu, we are making Luke's pumpkin pancakes. We're also carrying a book around with us everywhere we go, a paperback preferably, and reading it whenever we can.

Wear a chunk knit sweater. Go to a farmers market and buy anything that looks like it could be purchased in Stars Hollow. If you walk around with the enthusiasm of Miss Patty, you get extra points. You can make a sign for your kitchen that says no cell phones and [music] implement it specifically during breakfasts. And then lastly, for the journal prompt, I think this is so fun. Write [music] things that you think Taylor Dozy would find you for.

The next week is September 6th through the 12th, and this [music] is '90s witch week. Practical Magic 2 comes out right at the end of the week. So, everything we do leading up to that, [music] I want it to be so witchy. So, of course, I wrote watch Practical Magic and then Practical Magic 2 at the end of the week. Eat breakfast with the company of Sabrina Spellelman on the TV. And if you want, you could even eat chocolate cake for breakfast.

Paint your nails an extremely '9s witch shade. Wear an outfit that makes you look like a character in Charmed. Thrift for something that looks like it belongs in the Owen sister's house. And the journal prompt for this is to write your perfect man or perfect person spell. Like must like going to bookstores at dusk. [music] Absolutely not allergic to cats. The 13th through the 19th of September. This is dead poets [music] fall semester week.

This is for that feeling of the fall semester starting. Watch dead poet Society. That's [music] the first thing you have to do. Pick one poet for the week and study them. And then you could give yourself a mini fall elective and study it for the week. That could be the history of ghost hunting, autumn and Halloween and Victorian literature. I'm always curious about vampires. I would love to go back to school and study vampires.

Walk around a university campus. Bring a book with you and [music] read underneath a tree. Wear loafers, blazers, and cardigans. Read out loud to your pets or anybody willing to listen like they're forced to be in class with you. And you must convince them of why the subject matter of what you're reading is important. read [music] them something with the vigor that you feel in your heart when you first read it because you love it and you just want to share it with them.

Go to a used bookstore and browse the classics section and then choose a classic that speaks to you. And the journal prompt for this week is to [music] write things that you think are worthy of being late to class for. Like for me that would be stopping to pet a cat. If you want to get a little bit deeper, you could write your own oh captain my captain manifesto. Okay. And then I need to ask you guys for September 20th through the 26th.

I do not know what this week is. I've been thinking about it and it hasn't come to me and I I just don't know what fits here properly. So, if you could let me know in the comments after listening to what I have for the rest of fall. I just know something is missing, but it's too early for it to be spooky and Halloweeny. But I've already done some of my other fall themes that I really like like Gilmore Girls and Practical Magic [music] and Going Back to School and You've Got Mails.

I don't know. If you could help me out, I would be so grateful. The next week is September 20th through October 3rd. And this is Octobering week. If you've been around my channel for more than a year, then you probably know that October 1st is a holiday in our household. So, this whole week is dedicated to the arrival of the best month of the year. So, first we're going to start with watching your own October is Arriving movie on September 30th and then wake up on October 1st wearing [music] pumpkin pajamas or any Halloween pajamas and have a pumpkin spice breakfast.

And then next you visit either a pumpkin patch, a corn maze or a cemetery. You have to do that sometime during the week. We usually do it on October 1st. At the beginning of the week, make an October basket or analog bag and put in things that you've been specifically waiting to enjoy during the month of October. [music] That could be a coloring book, a puzzle. Go for a drive in search of Halloween. Whatever that means to you.

[music] Text somebody and say, "Happy Octobering day." They'll probably be very confused. Send a bunch of pumpkin emojis. The journal prompt for this week is to create a Zillow listing for your dream October house. So, like if you were selling a house that is your dream October house and you wanted [music] a fellow October enthusiast to buy it, what would you put in the listing? Maybe it has ghost cats or maybe it has 17 fireplaces.

Next, October 4th through the 10th is Saturday morning mystery club. This is dedicated to Scooby-Doo, Nancy Drew, Monster Squad. So, starting off with watching Scooby-Doo on Saturday mornings with a big bowl of cereal or a toaster strudel. Carry a little tiny notepad with you at all times. And then anytime [music] you notice something suspicious or strange, you write it down. And you're you're looking for things that might be suspicious.

Like maybe a crow looks at you the wrong way. Go for a nighttime flashlight walk with a thermos of cocoa. Take flash photos at night and [music] inspect them for signs of ghosts. Add jinkies or jeepers to your vocabulary. The journal prompt for this week is what would your mystery [music] ink alter ego be? Like what would your detective name be? And what would your signature outfit look like? What would your specialty be?

You need to have a catchphrase and a weakness. And then for October 11th through 17th, we have vampire week. I love this week so much. First, we have read some of Dracula, even if it's only the first few pages or the first chapter. [music] Watch a vampire film that you've never seen before. Make a garlic infused dinner. Stay up past your bedtime reading by candlelight because [music] vampires don't sleep. If you could stay up all night reading, props to you.

That would be amazing dedication. Eat Count Choulcula for breakfast. wear an unusually luxurious outfit to go do a regular errand or even something fun like going to the movies, you could dress up. I feel like that's absolutely something a vampire would do. The journal prompt for this week [music] is I don't really have words for it, but the idea is that if vampires exist, like let's let's just say that they exist. How are they existing in plain sight?

Why don't we see them? Do they live somewhere specific? What is their strategy for remaining unknown to the rest of us humans? For the week of the 18th through the 24th, I have not decided. I am between three different themes and I need you guys [music] to let me know which one you think is best. First is Adam's family week. There's so much you could do here. Or I love the idea of a haunted house week or ghost hunting [music] paranormal type week or dark carnival week.

Very like something wicked this way [music] comes Ray Bradbury. I might be leaning most towards Adam's family, but I really love dark carnival week. Or maybe I just celebrate all of them in one week. I could do I could probably do that. And then finally, for the week of October 25th through the 31st, this is the Halloween special week, you guys. There's too much for this week. Carve a jacko'lantern while listening to something spooky.

For me, this is usually Victorian death stories. Buy yourself your favorite Halloween candy and put it in a bowl or a pillowcase or whatever you prefer to eat your trick-or- treat candy out [music] of and eat it on Halloween night. have a jacko'lantern living room photo shoot. This was inspired by this picture. I have loved this picture since the first time I saw it and it has been inspiration for my personality ever since.

Watch Halloween specials, specifically Martha Stewart. You can't go wrong with Martha on Halloween. They just go hand in hand. Listen to the Halloween Town theme song while you walk around your neighborhood looking at the Halloween decorations. And the journal prompt for this week is to think about your dream childhood Halloween day. What would that look like? What would you do? And then do as much as you can on Halloween.

We're getting way into the future here. So, we're on November 1st [music] through the 7th. And this is a Victorian autumn week because I'm not ready for Christmas the day after trick-or-treating and Halloween. That's just not who I am. I've never been that person. And I think [music] the wintry side of autumn is so overlooked and underappreciated. So for Victorian autumn week, we [music] are watching Janeire or The Uninvited.

Any black and white films that feel eerie and moody and [music] spooky. Have a cemetery picnic wearing black to mourn Halloween's ending. But also, we're still enjoying autumn. So find a gravestone and learn as much as you can about that person from the gravestone. Maybe there's a recipe, maybe there's a quote. Take some time to maybe say their name even [music] though you don't know them. I think it's nice to bring life to their name.

Read the newspaper during breakfast instead of looking at your phone. I know it's not very Victorian necessarily, but fits this mood. Read a Gothic [music] Victorian novel by Candlelight before bed. Use the Victorian phrases instead of modern ones. Like instead of saying, "Oh, it's raining." You can say, "Look, the weather has turned." If you do [music] have a Victorian night gown or any sort of night gown that could pass as like I'm carrying a condalabra haunting my house at night, wear that to bed this week.

And I don't have a journal [music] prompt for this week yet. I'm still thinking about it. If you have any good ones that you can think of, please let me know. The next week of November 15th through the 21st, I have the Christmas issue. It's like winter's version of the autumn issue where we're thinking about who we're going to be this upcoming season because you do want to prepare before Christmas arrives and that's what this week is for.

But then the week of November 28th, sorry, 22nd through 28th, this is pie and paperback week. This is the week of Thanksgiving if you're here in the US. The idea behind this is just eating and reading and that's it. I haven't come up with the exact bullet points that [music] I want for these weeks. It's just so far into the future. I'm like, I'm not there yet mentally. I'm still like back to school here. But I hope those were helpful.

I loved doing [music] this. Even though I know each week feels like it's a bucket list, it's really more inspiration for how you just want to live your life that week. Feel free to steal any of mine.
