Let me show you how to stop sugar from damaging your cells. And I'm not talking about eating less sugar, but blocking the damage it does once it's already inside your body. Many people don't realize that there are very effective natural ways that help your body deal with all the problems that come with sugar. And this will not only improve your metabolism, but also benefit your blood sugar levels and even longevity. Okay, so the key to limiting sugar damage once it's inside your body is understanding what it actually does.
Most of us think sugar hurts you in a very simple way. So you eat it, your blood sugar goes up, and over time that causes problems. That's the story that we've all been told, and it sounds logical, but it's kind of incomplete. Because what actually damages your cells is not the sugar itself, but what sugar turns into once it's been metabolized. And this is super interesting. There's a group of molecules called AGEs. That stands for advanced glycation end products.
And the name doesn't really matter that much, but what matters is what these molecules do. They are sticky reactive molecules that form when sugar or sugar byproducts bind to proteins, fat, and even your DNA. And once that happens, those structures don't work the same anymore. And the crazy part, and many people don't realize this, is it's happening all the time in your body, even if you eat relatively healthy and if your blood sugar isn't that high.
AGEs are constantly forming in the background and slowly building up. Over time, they can start to change how your body functions. And this is the real issue that most people get wrong. They think the damage from sugar is just about energy or excess calories or maybe insulin. But the deeper issue is structural damage to your cells. For example, when AGEs form, they literally change the shape and function of your proteins.
Your collagen in your skin becomes stiff. Your enzymes stop working properly, and receptors on your cell become less responsive. And this doesn't just affect one system, it affects everything at once. Think about your skin again. Collagen is what keeps it firm and elastic, but when AGEs bind to it, it becomes rigid and stiff, and that's one of the reasons skin starts to wrinkle and lose elasticity over time. But the same thing is happening inside your body.
For example, your blood vessels become less flexible and your joints lose their smooth movement. And of course, your metabolism becomes less efficient, which means it's even worse at dealing with sugar. Now, here's the interesting part that you have to know. The most damaging AGEs are actually not formed directly from glucose, so sugar in your blood, but something called carbonyl stress. When your body processes sugar, especially when there's a lot of it or when your metabolism is under a lot of stress, it produces highly reactive molecules like methylglyoxal.
These are much more aggressive than glucose itself because they so rapidly form AGEs, much quicker than normal sugar. So, even if your blood sugar looks normal, you can still have high levels of these reactive compounds. And that's why some people feel like their body is aging faster even when they're doing a lot of things right. Because once AGEs are formed, they don't just sit there, but they actively interfere with how your cells communicate.
We already talked about how they bind to proteins and change their structure, but they also spike inflammation like crazy. Because when this happens, certain receptors on your cells are activated that trigger inflammation. What you have to understand is that inflammation is not just about pain and swelling. It's a biochemical signal that tells your body something is wrong. When this signal is constantly being activated, even at low levels, it starts to disrupt normal cellular function.
That means your cells produce less energy, they're more resistant to insulin, and their repair slows down. And over time this creates a kind of background noise in your body where nothing works quite as efficiently as it should. And here's where things get counterintuitive. This process is not only driven by how much sugar you eat. Yes, cutting sugar from your diet definitely helps, but you also need to improve how well your body processes that sugar.
Because if your nutrient status is good and your stress levels are under control, your body produces fewer of these reactive byproducts. But if those systems are under pressure, even a normal amount of sugar can lead to a higher production of all these reactive compounds. And this is where most people completely overlook what's actually happening. They focus on cutting sugar, which can help, but they ignore the metabolic side of the equation.
So, the obvious next question is, can you actively intervene in this process? Can you reduce AGE formation or at least limit the damage that they cause? Yes, we definitely can, and this is where certain natural compounds start to get interesting. Let's talk about the three most potent ones, and we will start with number three, which is carnosine. Carnosine is a small molecule that is made from two amino acids, beta-alanine and histidine.
Your body naturally produces it, especially in muscle and brain tissue. What makes carnosine interesting is that it can directly bind to reactive sugar byproducts, and it basically neutralizes them before they can attach to other things like proteins. A simple way to think about it is that carnosine sacrifices itself and takes the hit so that the rest of your body's protected. This makes it one of the most effective anti-glycation compounds that we know.
But here's the catch, carnosine is rapidly broken down in your blood. So, when you take it as a supplement, only a portion of it actually remains intact long enough to have an effect. So, even though it is very potent in theory, in the real world, its effects will differ from person to person depending on how quickly their body breaks it down. If you want to try it out, most people use around 500 to 1,000 mg per day, and some split the dose throughout the day to maintain more stable levels, and taking it away from meals can also improve absorption slightly.
Number two is luteolin. Luteolin is a plant compound that is found in things like celery, parsley, and certain herbs, and it works in a different way from carnosine. Instead of focusing on preventing AGEs from forming, it reduces the damage that they cause after they're already present. This is super important, so let me explain. Like I said before, when AGEs bind to the receptors of cells, they trigger inflammation and oxidative stress.
Luteolin has been shown to inhibit this signal pathway, which means the same amount of AGEs causes less damage and will trigger less inflammation. So, it acts at a different stage of the damage process that your body undergoes when you eat sugar, and luteolin is more of a system stabilizer, so it helps your body handle the presence of AGEs more gracefully. In terms of dosing, most supplements range from about 50 to 100 mg per day, and because it's fat soluble, taking it with a meal that contains some fat will definitely improve absorption.
And then we get to number one, which surprises a lot of people because it reduces AGE formation directly at the source. The compound I'm talking about is benfotiamine, which is a fat-soluble form of vitamin B1, and it works by changing how your body processes glucose. Instead of allowing glucose to produce all of these harmful byproducts, it helps redirect it into pathways that are less damaging. It basically helps your body handle sugar better, which then reduces everything downstream.
So, less AGE formation, less inflammation, and better mitochondrial function. And this is why it often has more consistent effects in real-world situations compared to compounds that are only tested in a lab setting. In In of dosing, most people will benefit from between 150 to 300 mg per day, usually taken with meals because it's fat soluble. This then brings me to the most important part of the video. To really get sugar damage under control, you need to look beyond sugar intake and also consider what's happening once the sugar is already inside your system.
Does your body have the raw materials and cofactors to deal with that sugar and can it do damage control? Because the real driver of AGE formation is metabolic pressure. So, I'm talking about high glucose spikes, nutrient deficiencies, unstable blood sugar regulation, or chronic stress. These are all factors that increase the production of reactive molecules in the first place. So, the goal is not to eliminate AGEs completely because that's not possible, but instead to reduce the load and support your body's ability to handle them.
Once you see it through that lens, managing sugar as a problem becomes a lot easier. And I will link related videos in the description that talk more about stress and blood sugar management. So, make sure to check those out if this applies to you. And I will also link my programs and a few free resources that you should definitely look into. Thanks for watching and I will see you in the next video.
