Why Do You Want to Work at Capital One? (The Answer That Gets You Hired) transcript

The most important question you're going to get asked in any interview is why do you want to work here? And that's no different at Capital One. They're going to ask this question, and if you don't have a great answer, they're probably going to hire someone else who is equally qualified but has a really passionate answer for why they want this job and why they want to work for this company. Today's video, I'm going to teach you the formula for doing this and giving you three great examples you can use in your interview with Capital One to absolutely nail this question and increase the likelihood of getting hired.

Now, this is video three of a four-part series. So, this happens to be the first video you are seeing, make sure you go to the playlist and watch videos one and two. Now again, I want to underscore just how important this is.

I am a hiring manager myself, and if someone doesn't have a great reason as to why they want the job, why they want to work at this organization, another candidate will. And if it's equal, like all things being equal, equally qualified, the person who has a more passionate answer for this question in particular, it's like a tiebreaker, they're probably going to move forward. Now, when you're asked this question, you want to use the 50/50 rule.

The 50/50 rule basically states the first 50% of your answer to this specific question should be about why the company is appealing to you. What is it about the organization that makes you attracted them? And the second 50%, well, this needs to be about why you are qualified for this role. And if you can do both of those things while answering this question, you are absolutely going to nail it. So, let's get to the first answer.

Now, the first answer is the tech answer. One of the things that's really unique about Capital One is they have essentially made themselves into a tech company that operates in the banking world. So, this serves as a great answer for anybody whose job has anything to do with tech. But even if it doesn't, it's still a really good answer because market position is extremely important. So, in answering it, your answer might sound something like this.

Hey Ben, why do you want to work for Capital One? Well, that's a really good question, and there are a lot of things that I find appealing about Capital One, but one of the things that I really like is I really like the investment in tech. I was doing some research prior to this interview, and one of the things that really impressed me is just how much Capital One has done to position itself as a tech company who happens to be in banking.

I really like the strategy behind that. So, working for a company like that would be really inspiring to me. Additionally, I've been in sales for the last 5 years, and blank. And then you'd go on to briefly tell them why you're a strong fit for this role. Now, you'll notice while I was answering this question, I talked about my why, the tech, but I also dropped in there while I was doing my research for this interview.

There is not a single HR person, recruiter, or hiring manager out there who doesn't appreciate a well-researched and well-prepared candidate. So, just adding that in there is an extra sprinkle to make you look more attractive as a candidate. Now, that's a great answer. Let's go to the next one. Okay, so the next answer is the career development and internal mobility answer. So, one of the things Capital One is actually known for is there is a lot of career development and the ability to move within the organization.

You know, they invest in their employees, they offer tuition reimbursement. There's a lot of growth that can be taken place. So, if that's something that interests you, you know, that's obviously very attractive. So, your answer might sound something like this. Ben, why are you interested in working for Capital One? Well, that's a great question, and Capital One to me is an incredibly attractive uh destination employer for a few reasons.

But, one thing that stood out to me while I was reading reviews from your company is so many people talk about the career development, personal development, and mobility within the organization. I'm looking to work at a place that invests in their people. And when I was reading Glassdoor, the reviews from your current and past employees, it became abundantly clear to me that Capital One is a type of employer that invests in their people, and I found that to be really, really intriguing.

Additionally, I've been working in the XYZ industry for the last 10 years, and I've got experience doing blank. And then you go on to tell them briefly, again, why you'd be a really strong fit for the role. If you can do that, you're going to do great. Okay, the next answer is the award-winning recognition answer. So, Capital One has actually won like a handful of awards. In 2025, I believe they were number 36 on the top 100 places to work for Fortune magazine.

Um just like a litany of awards. You can go find them online. You can Google that. But, that's impressive, right? To consistently find yourself on a top place to work, that's good company. Those are good lists to be on, and it serves as great fodder for this type of answer. So, your answer might sound something like this. Hey Ben, why are you interested in working for Capital One? Well, that's a really good question.

And to me, I think it's really important to find a place to work where they invest in their people, and you can have a good quality of life. Um you spend a lot of time working, so the employer you work for makes a huge difference in the impact in your life. And I have seen how many times Capital One has made it onto various top places to work list, and I find that to be incredibly motivating. Um so, it emboldened me to pursue this opportunity because I became even more attracted to your organization.

Additionally, I've got experience doing blank. And then you go on to tell them why you're a good fit. I like this answer because it shows you do research, it shows what you value, and it aligns yourself with the organization. Now, the next thing you need to do if you want to get hired at Capital One is you're going to need to have great questions to ask the interviewer at the end of your interview. It's literally the last thing you can do to differentiate yourself from other candidates, and there's a huge difference between good questions and bad questions to ask in the interview.
