Hello, Dragons. My name is Bella. I'm the founder of Soul Kitchen, an award-winning instant soup brand, on a mission to reinvent what convenience foods can be. I’m here today seeking £40,000, in exchange for 10% equity in my business. The idea first came to me during my final year at university. At the time, I loved cooking and I was interested in nutrition, but like many other students, I found myself grabbing instant foods out of convenience.
At the same time, the wellness space was booming, with matcha, protein powders and superfood blends. But in my opinion, there was nothing linking this category to real, comforting food. And that is when I had my light bulb moment. What if I could take the convenience of an instant soup and reimagine it, using high quality, dehydrated vegetables and delicious natural flavour. Leaving out any artificial flavours, gums, emulsifiers, added sugar or palm oil, to create something that was truly nourishing, but so easy.
And since our launch in March 2024, we've sold over 40,000 units of soup, the majority coming from our own website and Amazon. But my long term vision for Soul Kitchen is to explore further opportunities within retail and food service. I want to see the soup stocked on airplane menus, in office kitchens and, of course, the supermarkets. Thank you so much, and you should all have some soups to try in front of you. Oh! We've got three flavours.
I do recommend the Thai beetroot and coconut, which is at the front. And then the sweet potato and pumpkin, that’s our curried flavour. Oh, it's got a bit of a kick. Then there's tomato. Bella, hi. Thank you so much for delighting us with your gorgeous soups. Thank you. Really, really delicious. Tell me more about this industry. Obviously, there is Cup-a-Soup. I've had the Heinz rehydrated soup on an aeroplane. Tell me how your soup is different to theirs. So, we use a significantly higher proportion of real vegetable powders, and that's what's giving us the the fibre content.
The flavour really does come from that concentrated vegetable. Hmm. So, tell me about the cost of this. How much would I pay for one of your soups? So, these are retailing in cases of 12 for £20. So it's £1.66 per portion of soup. Hmm-mm. It's a little bit higher than our competitors. But actually, we do have that crossover with the wellness market, so...
It's an area which people are willing to, I believe, pay for the value. Okay. And you're the only ones doing this? As far as– Of this quality? As far as I’m aware, yeah. We've been reeducating consumers on these vegetable powders, and by leaving out cheap ingredients, which is how our competitors are bringing their prices down. Hmm-mm. Why did you come to Dragons’ Den? What were you looking for today? My area I love is sales.
I love getting out there and pitching to smaller independents, getting feedback. I'd say the supply chain and the operations is probably where I need the most support, and the mentoring, and the, obviously, the financial support would unlock those channels further. You’ve got a fantastic energy. Thank you! Have you ever considered manufacturing yourself? Building a factory or? No, not necessarily building a whole factory with, you know– When we look at this product, all it is, is blending powders together. You're buying the dehydrated powders, right, from different manufacturers, and all you would need is a machine that blends the powders together, and then fills that into these sachets. Obviously, it's an initial investment, but I just wondered if that was a route that you’d considered, because this would save you a lot of money, long term. Yeah, no, I totally agree.
I’ve looked into pack form flow filling machines, which is the equipment we need. And I think it has just come down to the scale we're at, at the moment. I think what Susie says about having your own factory, you only do that when your orders surpass your supply. Okay. I'm not saying it's wrong, I think it's a brilliant idea, but I wouldn't, I wouldn't let the production run your business. Yes. It's all about, let the sales run the business, then worry about the production. Because without the sales, you've got no production. Yeah. You know? Now, as far as the investment today, I just think, the opportunity’s very small. You know, and you're going to need a lot of mentoring. So for that reason, I'm not going to invest, I’m out. Thank you so much, Touker. I want to say congratulations. Thank you very much. I think it's really great. The product, I think it tastes really nice. I love the way you presented it. However, this is quite a small opportunity, at the moment. To make this a really bigger business, something I would want to get involved with, I think there's a lot to do. And I do think you're going to need a lot more money than 40k. So, I'm not going to invest and say that I’m out, but I tip my hat to you. It's a really nice product and I hope you do well. Thank you.
Thank you so much. I– So, I’ve been sitting here thinking, you’re– I really like you, you’re really good. Thank you. But I'm not convinced that you're going to break this in a big way into the big supermarkets. Because I think that you've already had resistance on price, you know? So, I don't think that I see the scale that I think you might be imagining. So for that reason, I'm afraid I won't be investing, I’m out. Thank you, Deborah. How’re you feeling? Yeah.
Really interesting feedback. I've really enjoyed chatting to you all, thank you. I mean, that's another testament of your fantastic personality, because it is, it's an opportunity to learn and to evolve. And so you've taken it very well. And I think I've been sat here for quite a long time because I’m such a big fan of you as a person, and I hope some day I get to invest in you, but, unfortunately, it won't be in this business. So, I’m gonna say that I’m out, but I wish you the very best. Thank you, Steven.
Thank you. I– I really love your product, Bella. But a product that sells for £1.66, for me, isn't exciting. And I was thinking about what you were talking about, using mushrooms and adaptogenic ingredients. And I was thinking, what about collagen? What if you had a product that makes collagen taste better by blending it into a soup? You know, that's a product that I would purchase. And I think that's something that you could charge a lot more money for, couldn’t you? I think for me, the core range was definitely one to just introduce us as a brand doing soup really well.
And then I think the functional. I agree, collagen would be fantastic. Matcha’s also a really interesting– I don’t think a savoury matcha’s been done before. I think that's the real opportunity. You know, you mentioned about what you're good at. You love sales, and I can see that. And your challenges are within supply chain and operations. And I feel like I can really help you with that. So, in contrast to some of the other Dragons, who I really disagree with, I've always been manufacturing my own products, and I've manufactured them before I’ve had the demand for them. Because I wanted the story. I wanted to say to our customers that, “I love my products so much. I freshly make it every single day in my mum's kitchen or in my own little factory,” and that is an amazing sales point. That is our competitive edge. So, I feel like I could really help you to set up your own manufacturing premises and a really, really kickass product that no one has ever seen before. So, I am going to invest in your business. I'm going to make you an offer. You asked for £40,000 for 10% of your business. I’m going to offer you all of the money, but I would like 15% of your business. Okay.
I would love to accept that, Susie! [All cheering] Thank you. Thank you so much. I really enjoyed that!
