I Added Portals to Chess transcript

Hello and welcome back to the channel. Today we're playing chess against Stockfish, but I can use portals from the game Portal 3, which isn't even in production. Jokes aside, I was sick the last couple of days, so I'm just happy to let you guys know that you can play this variant yourself over on iwantcheckmate.com. My goal is to win one game. Let's get started with game number one. All right, game number one, just like the last time that we played this, I'm going to be hyper aggressive in my attack, except this time I think even more so because basically my only goal is to create space around Stockfish's king, and as long as there are empty squares around the king that I can place my pieces on, that should be plenty for me to get some sort of checkmate on the board.

So, I'm really just going to throw all of my pawns in its sort of king's direction. Um and then once I develop my pieces, I should have some pretty quick ways to teleport myself over to whatever squares I managed to open up. We are met with pawn to D5. I'm not completely sure why I can't just take that. I suppose uh Stockfish's queen will simply take back, which it does in fact do. Sorry, my voice is kind of giving out somewhat.

But, we do get that queen onto D5. Let's go ahead and just develop the bishop. I should probably also castle my king sooner rather than later. We get bishop to F5 in response. We'll go ahead and castle the king. I don't really want to trade off pieces. Um I'm imagining it also wants to queen side castle, right? Which it does exactly do, but I think that's actually a pretty darn good thing. Um because you can imagine in some universe I get my queen from D1 all the way down to A8 just by teleporting it, and I should have a pretty brutal attack against Stockfish's king.

Now, I don't actually want to do that quite yet. I I want to see if I can find a way to manipulate it to get some sort of piece, doesn't really matter which one, onto D7, and then also remove this knight so it can no longer defend on B8. And then Stockfish won't even see queen to A8 coming, which will just be checkmate. So, I guess the real question is, what's the fastest way that I can do that? I guess we can start by trying to remove this knight.

Let's go knight to E5. And if we can get that knight off of C6, I we're one step closer to getting our kind of final goal. Okay, the bishop does take. Now, let's take back with the queen. I do still want it to take on E5 even though it does lose me a pawn. Right, it does in fact take. We'll go ahead and recapture and we are one step closer to getting that queen on A8 checkmate. Right, the queen does take back. Now, the only way that I could get rook to D7 is maybe by just giving a check.

Um the problem with the check is that something like queen to E6 is equally successful at blocking. Not only that, but both of these moves defend F7 as well. So, it's not like if queen to H3 it has to play rook to D7 to defend cuz queen to E6 fulfills that same purpose. Although, I suppose if queen to H3 queen to E6 I have rook takes F7 and obviously it can't take me back cuz the queen is still pinned. So, maybe this does work.

Let's play check and maybe we can get rook to D7 on the board. Oh, it does in fact decide to play queen to E6 anyways, which means I'm no closer to getting that D7 square covered up. So, how do I proceed? Obviously, I don't want to trade queens. I guess I can just move my queen back over to D3. It's a little bit slow, but uh I do need to get that queen trade off the board, otherwise the entire plan uh goes down the drain.

I've just realized there was also the possibility of king to B8, which I didn't even consider, but luckily it did play queen to E6 after all. Okay, let's get some pieces involved because I don't think I'm going to be able to force it to actually move onto D7 uh try as I might. We do get knight to D5. I think what it wants is to trade off the knight for the bishop and then have queen to E3 on the board, which forces a trade of queens.

Um which of course makes a lot of sense because it is in fact up material. So, I think bishop D2 might be forced, uh but I can't really play on the back foot here too much. Oh, wait. I just haven't been thinking creatively enough. You know what I could do? I could play queen to B5, allow it to take on F4 and then just teleport my rook to A8 and that's checkmate. Right, it does in fact take, but now I can simply set up a portal on E1, set the location portal at A8, and then rook to E1 is simply checkmate.

And with that we do in fact defeat Stockfish. If you guys go to play this yourself, you simply double left click for a blue portal and double right click for an orange portal. Okay, I think I can do it even faster than that. So, I'm going to play a new game and I think this time I'd like to try and defeat it in under 15 moves. I think that's perfectly reasonable. That's seven sides per side, technically eight for me if if the game were to end on move 15.

Okay, so let's let's start spending these moves quickly. That's move number one on the board and I I think it's very reasonable for me to do it in under 15 as long as I keep an open mind about how many different ways I can get checkmates. This will be move number two. And again, I think my first goal is just open up squares around uh the king's position. We get knight to F6. This is move number three, immediately sacrificing the bishop and then frankly, I'm pretty optimistic that I can play like uh move four, move five and then somehow just queen D7 is mate.

So, this will be move number four. It threatens the E5 pawn as well as just simply knight to G5 check. Okay, the knight defends. You guys already know that I can barely count over three. We're on 1 2 3. Move four. So, this is move five gives check and I think we'll be comfortably under 15 moves here. Nice. Cuz again, I can just double click E2, double click F7. Queen to F7 is in fact checkmate. With that, we defeat Stockfish with portals in literally six moves.

Now, this is probably the more boring variation uh playing against Stockfish that doesn't know what's happening. Obviously, if I were to play against Stockfish, but it could use portals, it would utterly dismantle me because obviously, Stockfish would normally destroy me. So, if it had portals, um then it would probably just teleport me into a black hole and obliterate me from existence. But, what I do think would be really fun is playing this against another player.

So, I'm going to see if I can set up a two-player sort of variation of this, which will be a little bit more complicated, uh a little bit more involved, but should be totally doable. And then maybe I'll invite someone on the channel to try and play uh Portal 3 quote-unquote chess with. Also, So reason I even thought to make the Portal 3 joke is cuz a lot of you guys commented under the last video that you were happy I differentiated between the Portal 2 portals and the Portal original game portals, which of course I found highly necessary as well.
