How to Add & Review Orders in PointClickCare 2026 transcript

Hi everyone. In today's video, I'm going to show you how to add and edit orders in PointClickCare. First of all, what's an order? Order is a formal instruction from a doctor or nurse practitioner or assistant telling the care team what to do for a resident. How to find the orders for a particular residents? Go to clinical, residents, select the resident, select Ali, and orders tab. Here is what you see in this screen, a bunch of orders.

You can sort them, for example, alphabetically if you click on order or in reverse alphabetical order. If there is an icon in this second column, then there is outstanding alerts related to this particular order. Okay, so how to add a new order? You click on new. Let's start with pharmacy. So, here in this create new order screen, order entry, you can first of all select the category. Pharmacy is for pharmacy items and over-the-counter medications, as well as some wound treatment.

Diagnostic laboratory is self-explanatory. Diet. Diet is interesting because it has three additional parts that other don't have. It has type, texture, and consistency. Supplement is for nutrition supplements. And the enteral feed in most facilities, there are specific batch orders for enteral feed, so I'll tell you later what's batch order feed. So far, don't don't think about that. So, here are the five main types of the orders and and the other.

Other is things like, for example, like code status. So, if you go to the pharmacy category, most of this stuff here is self-explanatory. So, first of all, who provided the order for this medication here? Select a doctor. How they provide you? Let's say they verbally told you that. What kind of medication are you supposed to give? Let's say lisinopril tablet. Uh the type of medication, right? So, it's a kind of subtype of uh what kind of meds you're giving them, and how how did how do you give it to them?

How they consume this medication? You can also add pharmaceutical orders by just typing the type of the drug here in this text box. Let's Let's actually add one, right? So, let's say let's assign a doctor who prescribed this medication. They told us this verbally. This medication meds administered by mouth. Then we add specific scheduling details for that, right? The type schedule and the time code. Let's save it. Acknowledge.

Okay. So, after you after you do this, uh so here is like the printable version of this. So, after you do this, as you can see, the order has become active. That's it about adding the order, right? Uh essentially new, add the type, fill in all the fields, and it's added and active. The other thing you I'll be you will be using quite frequent is something called batch update. This is very very important. So, what's batch batch update?

So, first of all, it allows you to for example, if the resident is transferred out of the facility, it allows you to discontinue Let's say that the resident unfortunately passed away, right? So, and you need to discontinue all the orders, you can essentially press discontinue, select all orders, and select, of course, like who communicated to that. So, let's say it was the doctor verbally. Discontinue order. Okay, here is once again a confirmation.

So, as you can see, so, batch discontinue applied to all of the orders that they were on the resident's chart and essentially discontinued them. But, there are other types of batch orders. For example, change from and to enteral tube. Essentially, the when you when there is a change in how enteral feed is performed, then you can change all the orders related to enteral feeding through this menu. Discontinue put on hold, for example, if you want to hold them until the resident is back from the hospital.

Reassign the pharmacy. Self-explanatory, allows you to select a new pharmacy for medication. Renew for those which were put on which were discontinued. Resume for those that were put on hold if you want to get them active back. Reassign physician, essentially reassign assign a different physician to all these orders. Uh and this is a universal thing, add order set, right? Essentially, allows you to add a number of orders at the same time, but the adding of these orders doesn't happen the same way that it happens for individual orders, which is quite confusing, but I'll bear with me, I'm going to explain it to you.

So, let's let's add a let's say that the physician actually prescribed this person a a Foley catheter, right? So, how do you do this? Uh so, first of all, you can search here for catheter. Okay, here we have it, Foley catheter, right? So, there are a number of procedures associated with Foley catheters that you need to add as an order. Let's say for the sake of this exercise that we need all of them. Okay. So, you see, so, we we select how this was communicated.

Let's say it was made by the phone by the doctor. And then we selected all these five orders. When I press save, I started I I don't start these orders automatically. They don't become active. They go into something uh called order queue, right? So, you see it's a different menu appearing here. It's called queued orders. And that means that you just added an order set and some of these orders are missing some critical details to them, right?

So, you need to essentially go to each of them and add the add all the necessary details, right? So, let's do that. So, we select all of them and we go into this queue, edit activate. How this How this queue looks. So, it's essentially the same screen as for individual order uh like adding all the details to the individual order, but there is also like the queue screen in the bottom. It shows you like all the orders that you're right now reviewing in this queue.

Uh okay, let's uh let's do this. Let's add all of this. Okay, catheter, that's fine. Facility time code flash every shift. Uh So, we have the we have this um So, we have the start date, we have the end date. Okay, and then we press update queue. So, we added some information which was specifically for that order and you see it was red before, now it's now it's now it's black. So, so it now says complete. That means that the information for this order is complete.

Uh one annoying thing, like after you complete one of these orders, you need to press on another order you want to review. Uh the Don't ask me. Uh So, here again, we need to order we need to add additional details, right? Most of the time it's just facility time code. Okay, here we need to select the start and end date and day of the month. Update queue. Complete, right? Let's do it for this one. So again, as you see in this queue update, we're just adding all the missing details to the to the orders that don't have that don't have it.

Until essentially what we want to achieve is that everything here says blue complete in black in black letters. Okay. Uh PRN error, okay, okay. Updating this. Cool. You see everything is now completed, right? And we can activate queued order. Are you sure? Okay. Yes, acknowledge. Here is we see again the confirmation we can print. Okay, good. And you see that all of these orders from the queue, they began they became active, right?

As I said, you don't really need to use queue for every order, so you can add individual order through this menu or through typing, let's say, lisinopril here, right? And [snorts] uh you can also add it and you can you don't need to do batch updates on all of them, right? You can essentially individually discontinue, update, view, or strike out these orders, right? So if you only need to do something to the individual order, you can do this through this action button.

But still, for example, when the resident is transferred, it's easier to use this batch update and I don't know, put on put everything on hold. Okay, one last thing related to orders. Uh there is also another order portal in PointClickCare that you might be using sometimes. It's eGoeClinical Orders. Uh and here it essentially shows you the the search screen for all kind of orders that are related to all the residents in the facility.

Right? So, for example, you could be using that if you starting or finishing your shift, you can use you can search for pending confirmation, right? Where you need to confirm. I mean, there is no none yet, but that's for example that what other people do, right? They search for orders pending confirmation when their shift starts or ends. Okay, and another another good life hack for you. So, in this medication field, you can find, for example, all the orders that have a word lisinopril in them, right?

But, I mean, we don't have any, but uh you can you can do that, right? But, you don't need to only look for medication here. You can enter here catheter, for example. And if you press search, it will find it will find for you all the orders that have a catheter in them for different residents, which is very handy. So, that's pretty much about orders. Again, just to recap because it's lots of info. New orders to start a new a single new order or type the medication here.

Batch updates when you need to change most of them. Use display filters if you want to find specific orders related to a to a single resident.
