as eating beef becomes more and more popular I'm increasingly asked yeah but what about all the antibiotics and the hormones in the in the meat in the beef I've heard that they're full of antibiotics and hormones and uh this is not true so if you if you trust me and believe me you can just stop the video now none of that's true but in this video I'm going to go through how we know that that's just not true especially in the United States now if you live in another country it's still probably not true but you need to you need to verify that with your local uh governmental body but in the United States that's absolutely false and I'm going to go through and and explain how we know that's true so first of all let me show you this recent tweet that I saw uh this is from a well-meaning person they're probably intelligent but they say that they're that that they just want to share with people the fact that when they eat beef they're not really eating meat but they're eating mostly hormones and antibiotics how many people have heard this and believe it how many people that you know have heard this and believe it do you believe this to be true I'm Dr kenberry a family physician and for the last nine years I've been studying nothing but human nutrition and I looked into this deeply and I've summarized all my my results that I've all my everything I've found and I want to share it with you today so first of all let's talk about antibiotics in beef now in the past antibiotics were added to all the feed that beef cattle at because it helps them grow bigger and and have more muscle and have more fat bigger tastier stakes and so for the same amount of feed you got a bigger cow at the end for Slaughter but but this has been waning for over a decade and it's effectively illegal in the United States now now when an animal does get sick gets an infection or something they're still given antibiotics but the FDA and the USDA both enforce strict withdrawal periods before Slaughter so if that animal got H fraud or some other infection they got an antibiotic shot or they got some antibiotics but there's a strict guidelines on how long that cow must wait before Slaughter see antibiotics in humans just like me and you and in beef cattle have a halflife and typically an antibiotic has a halflife of anywhere from 4 hours to six days it just depends and so uh for example if the half lifee is one day then you give the shot tomorrow at the same time half of that's already been metabolized and gone the next day another half of what's left is gone and so so you can see that after just a few days that antibiotic is completely gone it's not stored in the meat it's not stored in the fats it's metabolized and typically urinated out so the USDA also has a national residue program where they will randomly test animals and if they find that an animal has a high antibiotic residue they will Call that animal and if it keeps happening they will actually find that Rancher so they're they they're not playing around about this uh most of the antibiotics used in cattle are not the same antibiotics used in humans and therefore antibiotic resistance even if there were antibiotics still left in the meat which there aren't it would not contribute to uh antibiotic resistance in human beings now here's a chart showing the average withdrawal period uh for a beef cow if they've been given antibiotics so it depends on the antibiotic because the veterinarians who are in charge of these animals they know what the half-life is of said antibiotic and so if a cow got this antibiotic they're get they have to wait this this many days if they got this other antibiotic they have to wait more days and all of the ranchers know these guidelines they probably have them printed out in their office and and they keep records that's why all the cows have a tag in their ear so they can say okay we give we give cow $12.99 a a grand of seis born yesterday it's going to be okay we have to wait 10 days before we send that cow for Harvest there's no antibiotics to speak of in the beef that you and your family eat even if it's the cheapest discount grocery beef that that you can buy so that's the that's the truth about that so any beef that's sold in the United States goes through the FDA and USDA programs everybody that raises beef for the US market they know about these programs and they know that if they get caught trying to sneak this by they will be fined out of existence now let's talk about steroids or hormones uh cattle can still be given hormones to help them grow and become the biggest possible muscly uh marbled animal possible but that hormone is not stored in the meat that hormone is not not stored in the fat in fact in this is what I found in my research uh beef that have had hormones implanted to help them grow or only have the tiniest amount of hormone residue left compared to animals that don't have are not given any hormones whatsoever so beef cattle just like humans make hormones they make their own hormones that's how they turn from a baby calf into a big giant cow that's how they do that they make their own hormones and so what we're talking about here is the artificial hormones that would be given to help stimulate that growth even faster so when you actually look at a 3 o steak from a cow that was treated with hormones they'll have about 1.9 nanograms of estradiol in the in the meat while an untreated steak from an untreated cow they never given any uh exogenous hormones at all they'll have 1.3 nanog which is a difference of6 nanog between the hormonally treated cow and the cow that was never given hormone treatment now what's a let's talk about nanograms takes one billion nanograms to equal one gram okay it takes 1 million nanograms to make a milligram this is a in almost infinitesimally small amount of hormone and so if you eat the cheap beef from the discount grocery it's going to have 6 nanog more hormones in it than the grass-fed grass finish beef that cost $29 a pound that you would buy at some specialty butcher it's literally nothing it literally doesn't matter at all and let me let me show you this just to give you some perspective of what a tiny amount this is so here's a chart of how much uh estrogens are in different foods 3 oz of tofu has 19 million nanog of phytoestrogens remember the 3 o beef steak has 1.9 nanograms a cup of soy milk 10 million nanograms of phytoestrogens 1 o of flax seeds almost 2 and a half million nanog of phytoestrogen uh Tempe 3 oz 1300 13 1.3 million nanog a glass of milk 15 nanog one large egg 94 nanograms so you can see that if you're eating beef you're not getting any hormones if you really want to get a Mega dose of estrogen like hormones eat some tofu and drink some soy milk so this is nothing for you to worry about if you're planning on or are currently are eating a be a beef heavy diet you're not getting any hormones to speak of from the beef so I hope this helps you be more comfortable eating one of the most nutrient dense uninflammatory foods available to human beings on planet Earth that's beef you're not getting a a mega dose of hormones or a mega dose of antibiotics you're effectively getting no hormones and no antibiotics especially if you compare beef to other Foods uh which are full of hormones and potentially full of antibiotics beef is the most nutrient-dense uninflammatory hormone free antibiotic free food that you can eat and that you can feed your family whether you're on a low carb diet please include beef if you're on a ketogenic diet please include lots of beef if you're on a carnivore diet if you want to eat nothing but beef that is perfectly fine and and safe and healthy beef does not contain any meaningful amount of hormones or antibiotics let's please shoot this myth in the head and move on with our lives hope this video helped this is Dr Barry I'll see you next time
