hello I'm Iran from Harbin Mandarin calm very interested in learning to speak Chinese please subscribe to our channel on YouTube and visit our website if you're interested in private Chinese lessons to accelerate your learning I recommend you sign up for one-on-one lessons on our website today we're going to learn the tones in Mandarin Chinese as you may know Chinese is a tonal language that means the tones you use when pronouncing a word can change its meaning for example ma means mother ma means hand ma means horse and ma means insult so you can I ma ma that means love your mother you can also I mean ma I love your horse but you should never ma ma ma ma that means you saw your mother okay the first tongue is known as the high level tone and for each tone I will use a hand signal to mark what tone it is and for the first home I will go like this the first home is pronounced in the upper range of your normal speaking voice it's like when you go to the doctor and they have you open your mouth and go ah ah ah here are some examples and I will go over each one three times please repeat after me ma ma ma bah-bah-bah yeah yeah yeah Lau Lau Lau okay the second tone is known as the rising tone and for this tone I will go back this ah ah ah the second tone is pronounced similar to the rising tone in English when asking a question for example what what what now please repeat after me ma ma ma ba ba ba ya ya ya Lao Lao Lao very good and the third tone is the falling rising tone and for this home I will go like this ah ah ah the third tongue starts off in the lower range of your speaking voice drops a little and then Rises the key to making this tone sound correct is to make sure you start off with a low pitch it sounds like well well well now please repeat after me ma ma ma ba ba ba ya ya ya la la oh la oh very good and the first tone is the falling tone and for the first tone I will go like this ah ah ah the first tone is pronounced similar to the falling tone and English when giving a command for example stop stop stop now please repeat after me ma ma ma ba ba ah yeah yeah yeah llao llao llao very good and there's also a fifth neutral tone the neutral tone is not considered a real tone and it is how a syllable is pronounced when that syllable does not use one of the four main tones generally the neutral tone sounds shorter and softer and in the following two syllable words the first syllable uses one of the four main tones and the second syllable uses the neutral tone now please repeat after me ma ma that means mother ma ma ma that means further yeah yeah that means paternal grandfather yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah la la that means grip maternal grandmother la la la la la la very good okay that's all for this lesson I hope this lesson has helped you with understanding the tones in Mandarin Chinese if you find its video useful please like it and subscribe to our channel on YouTube for more information about our lessons please visit harbin mandarin calm thank you goodbye
