ChatGPT: Can it write ImageJ Macros? transcript

hi happy New Year it's good to be back hello the last couple of years at the beginning of the year I have tried to do a video on image analysis with respect to machine learning or artificial intelligence you've all heard of chat GPT you've heard the judge everybody's talking about chat GPT and I wondered whether or not chat GPT could be a game changer for image analysis could it write macros for mhg how useful would that be let's have a look and check you watch this first though well I log into GPT [Music] [Laughter] okay we've got chat GPT up here but first of all let's have a look at what the macro should probably look like I will let's just open an image this one will do um and we will let me just make it smaller so it's smaller so you can see it okay if we wanted to make a macro that for instance just made a 200 by 200 area and then cropped the image we would go to record we would specify do options sorry selection specify let's see uh 200 by 200 space okay here's a text and then if we were to crop that where's the crop there we go okay so there's two simple commands we're running the specify uh we just specify region we make it 200 by 200 it's kind of in the center of the image um and we run crawl all right so that's the kind of text that we're looking for for our macro we would then save that we would create that as a micro there it is and we would save as and we'd put it somewhere and then we would install it okay so that's the kind of text that we're looking for let's keep that to one side okay well let's see what chat and GPT can do so um can you write an image J macro can you GPT sure hello here's an example of Macro for mhj that opens an image file applies a threshold to it and then saves the threshold it images and you file yeah that would be useful so opens an image runs a threshold option it's usually right that's certainly one of the thresholding options and then saves it somewhere okay okay so let's ask it to write an image J macro that well specify uh 200 by 200 pixel region and oh spell that correctly region crop the image sure here's an example of a macro for MSG that opens an image file selects a 200 by 200 pixel region in the center damage and then crops the image to that region now okay so it says the script will crop the image in place and the original image will be overwritten and you can change the parameters accordingly all right so here's the code that it's written in here is the code that mhg would expect run the specify command and was 200 by 200 so it doesn't look the same will it work well he's a spoiler actually it doesn't work even if you save it as the correct file format I couldn't get the the image to work the remarkable to work you can see that run crop will uh has the same um syntax um but the opening and saving and the specify doesn't actually work for me I'm not sure they make rectangle will work I could copy this code um and then go to well let's close this we will go to macros and record paste that code in and create a macro and then save our micro as a crop test GPT dot i j m as it has to be called no can we install this drop test GPT ijm that's it you can see I've already tried this before I'll need to open an image to see if it works there's a crop test GPT file is not supported so a disappointing news is that uh I couldn't manage to get GPT to make a macro to do a very simple thing I still think this was really powerful really powerful maybe um if you were using a different image analysis software um that uses python that may be useful because we could see can convert to python maybe something like spider I think it is it's called um let's see if it converted to python and for the use those of you who you can write in Python you'll be able to judge well and what that's uh that's a good conversion so overall um we've been disappointing I'm going to work away with GPT and and see if I can get it to to do anything with mhg but for the moment I think huge promise but maybe a work in progress for the moment see you next time
