foreign book improve your listening skills through practice with your instructor Professor hania from University of orange listening activities do you should respond you agree or disagree or clarify you shall Give opinions also debate the topic this is covered under responding the first activity is based on responding the second activity can be designed on the basis of questions relevant to summarizing you'll be asked to write for example a brief report write a similar text you can be asked also to pan fries to write or say the same ideas in your words you can be asked as well to review I suppose that you know what I should revealed if you not made while listening and add new information it relates similar experiences role play a similar interaction to reconfirm information a pre-existing information of course or information that you came across to extend also is among the assignments that you will be asked to do in uh post listening activities so you really listen to other results is about the same job you have to bear in mind that the purpose of posts listening activities is to help you as a learner to connect what you have heard with your own ideas and experiences these activities help PhD move easily from listening to another skill among the four skills here and an instance an example that illustrates post listening activities on the basis of the assignment extent so here is a video about the importance of empathy Barack Obama at more house College commencements you listen to it carefully and on the basis of the Guardians article and these values this try try to to make a match and answer the following the questions the first question what is empathy according to Barack Obama or what does Barack Obama mean when he says it's not just about being able to walk in someone else's shoes what does Obama suggests is the key to achieving empathy what is the empathy deficit you found it in the article drawn from the guardian that Obama refers to how does Obama conclude his speech on empathy according to the researcher Peggy Mason what conclusion did the researchers draw from the red experiment everything is drawn from the very so listen attentively see the world through other people's eyes now empathy is a quality of character that can change the world many of you know what it's like to be an outsider know what it's like to be marginalized know what affects the string of Sting of discrimination and that's an experience that a lot of Americans share Hispanic Americans know that feeling when somebody asks them where they come from or tell them to go back gay and lesbian Americans feel it when a stranger passes judgment on on their parenting skills or the love that they share Muslim Americans feel it when they're stared at with suspicion because of their faith any woman who knows the Injustice of earning less pay for doing the same work she knows what it's like to be on the outside looking in your experiences give you special insight that today's leaders need if you tap into that experience it should endow you with empathy the understanding what it's like to walk in somebody else's shoes to see through their eyes to know what if it's like when you're not born on third base thinking you hit a triple it should give you the ability to connect it should give you a sense of compassion and what it means to overcome barriers and I will tell you class of 2013 whatever success I have achieved whatever positions of leadership I have held have depended Less on Ivy League degrees or s.a.t scores or gpas and have instead been due to that sense of connection and empathy the special obligation I felt as a black man like you to help those who need it most people who didn't have the opportunities that I had because there but for the grace of God go on I might have been in their shoes I might have been in prison I might have been unemployed I might not have been able to support a family and that motivates me so it's up it's up to you to widen your circle of concern to care about Justice for everybody white black and brown everybody not just in your own Community but all across this country and around the world see the world through other people's eyes you know empathy is a quality of character that can change the world here a mother pre-listed activity based on response you have Simon sinek I don't know whether you know him or not try to follow him he delivered his very in my videos and with the very powerful speeches on YouTube on other channels here it's about understanding empathy [Applause] oh foreign [Applause] embarrassed that I have a career I talk about things like trust and cooperation and there should be no demand for my work but the fact of the matter is is there is demand for my work which means that there's an opportunity it means that trust and cooperation are not yet standard in our organizations and yet they should be and we know that which is why we're looking for ways to bring those things to our organizations so I thought I would do something a little different today you know when you're speaking to tens of thousands of people and you have the opportunity to share a message of course most rational people would say let's go with something I've talked about lots of times and I'm really good at but I'm not normal so I'm going to do something completely new and I hope this works out um there are two things that I think that great leaders need to have empathy and perspective and I think these things are very often forgotten leaders are so often so concerned about their status or their position in the organization they actually Forget Their real job and the real job of a leader is not about being in charge it's about taking care of those in our charge and I don't think people realize this and I don't think people train for this when we're Junior our only responsibility is to be good at our jobs that's all we really have to do and some people actually go get Advanced educations and so that they can be really good at their jobs accountants or whatever right and you show up and you work hard and the company will give us tons and tons of training how to do our jobs it all shows how to use the software they'll send us away for a few days to get trained in whatever it is that we're doing for the company and then they expect us to go be good at our jobs and that's what we do we work very hard and if you're good at your job uh they'll promote you and at some point you'll get promoted to position where we're now responsible for the people who do the job we used to do but nobody shows us how to do that and that's why we get managers and not leaders because the reason our managers are micromanaging us is because they actually do know how do they do do the job better than us that's what got them promoted really what we have to do is go through a transition some people make it quickly some people make it slowly and unfortunately some people will never make that transition at all which is we have to go this through this transition of being responsible for the job and then turning into somebody who's now responsible for the people who are responsible for the job and as I said before one of the great things that is lacking in most of our companies is that they are not teaching us how to lead and Leadership is a skill like any other is a practicable learnable skill and it is something that you work on it's like a muscle if you practice it all the days you will get good at it and you will become a strong leader if you stop practicing you will become a weak leader like parenting everyone has the capacity to be a parent doesn't mean everybody wants to be a parent and doesn't mean everybody should be a parent leadership is the same we all have the capacity to be a leader doesn't mean everybody should be a leader and it doesn't mean everybody who wants to so the activity is based on responding so the question is do you agree or disagree with the following statement and why so you have to justify your answer empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others you agree or disagree and why empathy involves seeing the World Through The Eyes of another person and understanding their perspective empathy is different from sympathy it's our empathy and sympathy be careful here which involves feeling sorry for someone empathy is a skill that can be developed and improved through practicing experience empathy is essential these are questions I move uh directly because you are following me I suppose empathy is essential for building strong relationships and effective communication empathy involves listening actively and attentively to other than trying to understand their emotions empathy is specially important for leaders who need to understand the needs and concerns of their team members empathy is not the same as agree with someone it is about understanding that perspective empathy it requires set in the sides one's own biases and assumptions empathy is not just about understanding emotions that is also about understanding the context in which those emotions occur empathy requires being present and fully engaged in a conversation surely you are aware of the role played by mind maps to consolidate your knowledge about a particular topic here is a mind map we're gonna explain in details to make you grasp the main points constituting the fundamentals of the listening skills listening isn't often trivialized yet highly important skill for effective communication unfortunately in most people ignore this reality as a matter of fact listening is not a mere Act of hearing and replying in a robotic way you're not going to listen and the other person talks in automatic way on the other hand listening is a process whereby you give your undivided attention to the person to whom you are listening sometimes you'll listen a little more sometimes you plan your response or your way for a post to take the turn most of the time unsuccessful listening happens when you find difficulty to get the essence of any spoken communicative exchange for many reasons may not listen because you either come with preconceived ideas you are judgmental for example or bias sometimes you are chained up remember the do's and the Downs to practice effective listening so listening is so important because listening is probably the best way to connect with other people and build relationships this is rather active listening probably have not experienced active listening yet active listening the opposite of passive listening as an active listener you have to be mentally and physically engaged with what others are saying but before doing this well you have to bear in mind these few things first you have to show your commitment you have to put aside whatever might be distracting simply you cannot listen and accomplish multitask at the same time active listening takes a lot of time and energy you have to work on it active listening is not as difficult as it appears you have just to practice the tips that you have seen along our listening courses active listening requires non-verbal clues to be practiced as well you have to avoid all types of instructions you make eye contact but not staring your body poster should be open and directed towards the other person lean towards the speaker but not too close second active listening involves appropriate verbal communication the most important element here is asking the right questions at the right moment probably the most common patterns that you can make use of or paraphrasing summarizing clarifying probing and reflecting back you might say something like you're saying that as a paraphrase of what you've been listening to also you might say something like so the overall situation is to sum up and so on when engaged in a conversation show that you are actively following along and interested in what is being said refer to back channels from time to time use follow-up questions reflection and avoid jumping up to conclusions and now try to conjure up what I'm saying to you the Mind map in order to reinforce your listening skills [Music] well we arrive at the ends of the sequence thank you for watching [Music]
