- We Analyzed 349 YouTube Hooks. Most Hook Advice Did Not Survive.
The first 45 seconds of 349 videos from 36 channels, 254 million combined views. Speaking pace and time to payoff showed no difference between hits and flops. Concreteness did.
- We Bet Our Own Hook Study Would Replicate on Small Channels. It Did Not.
A preregistered replication on 96 channels between 1,000 and 20,000 subscribers, 941 analyzed videos. None of the three patterns held up.
- YouTube Script Statistics 2026
Word counts, speaking rate, hooks, and flops compiled from both studies: 1,290 videos from 132 channels. Median speaking rate in the 349-video study was 181 words per minute.
