Why You Shouldn't Tell ANYONE About Your Youtube Channel transcript

I was my own first and second subscriber so I totally get the urge to tell people about your YouTube channel to tell friends about it to try to promote it different places to try to get that initial nudge but I got to tell you you don't want to do any of that I've been YouTube for seven years I've known hundreds of creators and I'm telling you you do not want to tell your friends your family about your YouTube channel and I want to tell you a couple reasons why the first one is because you're going to get some unrealistic feedback you're going to get people telling you that that video is really good you're doing great you're doing whatever like it's totally worthless they're going to you ask them about their thumbnails you ask them about titles you ask them the quality of the video they don't know they're not YouTubers they don't they don't like it's it's totally unhelpful information unless you get somebody who's where you're at or above um it it's mostly just just bad feedback I'll would say you the second one is you don't want the wrong audience so I have multiple channels that I run and I purposefully have never mentioned the one of these channels because I don't want people from my audience on my main Channel which has 600,000 people over to that channel that has 200 people because it would ruin that channel and I think a lot of people especially when they're starting they just want you know you're at three subscribers and you want to get to 20 20's huge difference from three but if those 20 people are wrong it'll make the next video go out to the wrong wrong people and then the next video go out to the wrong people and then the next video go out to the wrong people until you can finally train the algorithm back to the way you want it to be and I think that's really um one one of the key points here is that you want the algorithm to be the thing that helps lift your channel there's a couple other reasons I want to talk about but especially when you're starting if if you want to like change topics or change to something new I would almost start a new channel because there is um a lot of opportunity when having a new channel that is fresh with no wrong subscribers um that actually really helps YouTube get your video out to the right people like if I took this channel where I talk about YouTube and I talk about like you know more my personal business stuff and I I tried to make a video about I don't know Tech or something it's just getting a tank even if that was an amazing video that on a tech channel would get a million views if I put that exact same video on my channel it's going to tank because the people who are watching are not the right people and if it goes out initially to those people and none of them click on it tells YouTube it's a bad video tanks it dead right from the GetGo so like you could literally take a great video that would work on a different Channel put it on your channel it's going to tank and that's the same thing that happens when you get your mother and your friends and a bunch of people watching who who just click on the video they don't really watch it that much they feel bad for you you know they're like whatever then it's actually going to make that video do worse because it's going to give it like um like if they're not watching all the way through and it's not the correct audience it's just going to immediately like have this big drop off until the the algorithm it's a bad video um so that's one of the reasons you don't want to actually get the wrong people in there um but another reason would be that you think about those people when you when you make a video and I can tell you this from experience so when I post a video um you know goes out to tens of thousands or sometimes hundreds of thousands of people and uh the only people that I worry about with those videos are the people that I know personally that walk up to me and say hey saw your video but whatever like hey how's this going like that makes me think about like when I make a video I worry about what I say because of those people that I know not because of everybody else so when you're anonymous when you're just getting started and nobody's watching that's complete Freedom when your mom's watching when your brother's watching when your friend's watching now you think about that when you're making a video it puts this pressure on you that like you're worried about being awkward in front of people you know as opposed to straight ERS um and it puts this pressure of like well if you you quit or you fail or whatever it could be embarrassing people might not be supportive they might make fun of you just don't tell them about it um and that's really something I like when you have goals there there's generally a lot of people who are very loud when they have goals like I'm going to do this this year I'm going to get in shape this year I'm going to start this channel I'm going to blow it up I'm going to do this I'm going to do that the people who say that never are the ones that do it the people who just shut up they don't talk about it and they just do things they never talk about it they never talk about about their goals and never talk about what they're doing they just do those are the people who who see a lot of success um it's kind of like that idea of going monk mode that's pretty popular right now where you just like stop talking to people and you do stuff and that's what really success on YouTube or success in any you know form of business happens when you shut up and do stuff um which it which is hard to do um when you're constantly telling people what you're doing and and and doing that type of stuff um that being said that can be kind of lonely um when you are you know by yourself especially when you're starting you don't know any other people who doing it I've been doing it for S years I don't know a single other I know one other Creator in my state that I hardly ever talk to so like I get the the loneliness aspect of it and the wanting to talk to about it but honestly like it's not helpful like you you you talk to people you try to get their opinion you get ask for advice they don't they don't know anything about YouTube it's like it's if anything it's negative advice it hurts you a little bit so um I get that but that's where I've found like some online communities I'm actually building a a free community um that's going to be coming up just to get creators to just hang out and talk to each other who are new so if you want to check that out I'll leave a link um we're trying to still like build it but hopefully you guys can get in just talk to each other just talk to other people who are doing the same thing because that's actually useful advice that's where you can get encourag and actual helpful feedback from people who have done it before and not people who have no idea what you're doing why you're doing it in your feedback or any of that but a lot of people still ask me where should I promote my YouTube videos I think this really comes down to delayed gratification and then um actually the next point is I think going to be the most important but really delayed gratification is just this idea of not buying something now so that you could have more money later like that's when I use it in finances that's what we think of but I think a lot of us get trapped in this posting links to Facebook posting um you know to Instagram posting to a Reddit or whatever just trying to get your video out there in front of people because again you move from that you know two View views to 200 views and it feels amazing but if you ever want to get to 200,000 views that's not going to be it that's not going to be the thing that gets you there the thing that's gets you there is going to be the next point so I would just say avoid that trap of instant gratification avoid that trap that you think this video was good enough to get more views if it was it would get more use like YouTube is on your side YouTube wants you to do well they want to make more money off of you and if your videos were good enough that would happen I actually looked back back at my old videos recently on my main Channel and I was like okay I could optimize some titles and thumbnails and see if I can get these more views now that I know how to make good titles and thumbnails the things that are actually important when you're making a YouTube video idea title thumbnail first 5 30 seconds rest of it doesn't really matter um and I was looking at them and I was like I literally cannot save these videos they are so bad that even if I made a better title than thumbnail they're not worth saving they're just bad videos and that's what you got to realize if you're starting a Channel and you're trying to get better you're trying to grow you're trying to build a stream of income whatever you're going to suck you're going to suck at making YouTube videos and you tell your friends and family they're going to see the bad videos um if that's something you want to do I wouldn't recommend it again um but just realize that for the first 10 20 30 50 videos they're going to be bad you don't walk out to a basketball hoop drain a three maybe you hit it once try to do it again like if if you never played basketball before probably going to miss the three but you're definitely not going to hit it three times in a row right but yet people expect like oh I've made two YouTube videos and why aren't they taking off you I've made 10 YouTube videos why aren't they taking off you you've never picked up a camera before you don't know about titles thumbnails all these things that really really matter that have theory behind them that there are books written about you don't know that stuff like why would your video do well why would people watch and then you blame the algorithm you blame all this stuff when I know people and I have done myself I have started a channel it has made a a month the first time it's gotten um videos within the first five videos that hit 50,000 views it's like science it's math and if you don't understand that math you can't just randomly like start writing down numbers and be like this math isn't working like what like like no you don't understand how to get to the end result and so as you're learning those skills as you're putting in the time I taking courses probably the best way to do it watching YouTube channels like this one watching other YouTube channels watching hourong explainer things making uh 50 thumbnails to learn how to get good at them if you made three you're going to be bad at making thumbnails if you've made two videos five videos 10 videos you're probably still going to be bad at videos um and all of these things kind of come together you can be great at one skill but if you don't have the rest it doesn't matter like I've talked about um my friend before who went from 2,000 subscribers to he just passed 100,000 subscribers and got his third million view video his video quality stayed the same but he learned some other skills that that got him over the point so the the video quality was great great great no views he didn't push it out to friends and family to get more he kept adapting and learning new things and eventually he got his ideas to match his um his style and his quality and that's what got him now millions of views he's looking to leave his job and that is because he learned the skills all of the skills you can't just have some of the skills you need all of the skills and that takes time it takes a year takes two years takes well it depends on how many hours you put in during that year but it just it takes a lot of time and so if you're constantly promoting your channel before it's good enough not only are you getting that wrong audience you're worrying about your your friends and family are saying they're giving you feedback they're like oh how's your channel going it's been 3 months and you still only have 47 subscribers like okay I I'm learning a new skill that I've never learned in my life it's going to take time and when you don't have to explain expl that to people when you just make this commitment which I've used myself of the threeyear rule where you're either going to do it for 3 years or you're not going to do it at all and I would say the same thing with YouTube if you're thinking about starting a channel don't think about making a video or three videos which is why I see everybody quit after like a couple videos like okay um but if you're not going to do it every week for a year for three years then don't bother because it's going to take time to learn the skills and to get good at them to be proud of your work took me years to to be to to you know look at a video and be like I'm proud I made that myself and it was just learning every week getting 1% better 1% better 1% better 1% better and it stacks and it compounds and that's where you start getting real growth and then even after that took me years right like two three years to run a profit on YouTube even though like I had decent views and size and stuff and now with the stuff that I know like I learned how to make good YouTube videos that was great over the course of a couple years because I wasn't good at learning like I I know a lot more things now uh I I could have cut that time in half but I took this time to learn all these skills to make good YouTube videos but I didn't know how to monetize those videos so until like two years ago I hardly made any money on YouTube even though I had a huge audience and that's like there there's so many skills inside of skills when it comes to YouTube and if you expect to learn that in a couple months like you're crazy it's going to take a lot of time and a lot of practice and ideally you don't want people staring down your neck asking questions giving you horrible feedback that might be good in like they might be trying to give you good feedback trying to give you good advice but if they're not like a Creator that's probably like full-time it's probably bad advice um so I guess that's where I'm where I'm where I'm landing with all this um I I I would highly encourage you it's like the best thing in the world it's giving me complete Freedom it's letting me leave my job have her wife leave her job um I get to talk about what I love every day I get to just sit on the floor and talk like this like it's super super fun so I would highly encourage to keep going if you are doing YouTube but um find your right people don't like don't don't look for the easy route don't look to jump cut it like it's going to take time um but ultimately if you enjoy what you're talking about and you enjoy making videos I think anybody can see success in this but most people quit after like a month or a couple videos and that's why everybody fails Youtube so uh just don't quit keep getting better and you probably you really got a good chance of success
