If you have lived your life with mental illness, even after you get treatment, there's a lot of This is a scary phrase, but best phrase I've got, developmental stunting, which is real, by the way. And so, that's what's really hard, is that the you have to do the catch-up. Even though that sounds really bad, let's call it what it is. We also don't want to lose hope, because here's the other thing I've seen, is that generally speaking, most people muddle through life.
If you put forth dedicated effort, like learning a language, if you kind of like You may be able to pick up a fair amount of Spanish over the course of two to five years if you move to a Spanish-speaking country. But if you work your ass off, you can learn Spanish in a month. Like one month is all it takes with dedicated effort. And what I found is that, no matter how far behind you are, like I I literally have never worked with a patient that has not been able to catch up with the right kind of effort and the right kind of guidance.
Doesn't mean that all my patients accomplish everything that they want, but what I'm talking about is the developmental delay that comes from mental illness is absolutely manageable. And best example of this, I had a patient who was addicted to opioids, basically was in his early 30s, and was not doing much in life because he developed an opioid addiction, probably sometime around college. Right, so he's been addicted to opioids for like 12 years.
So, his life has stalled, but he put his life together basically in two years, went to grad school, got a good job, got married, started to have a fulfilling life. And those two years were rough, but like two years is what it takes to, you know, and then he was a couple years older than many of his peers, but like he really had his together.
