A Platypus Can Kill A Dog With Its Feet transcript

[Music] hello and welcome to weird gross and beautiful casual discussion about aminals that I think are weird gross beautiful or all three and today we're talking about platypuses little known fact they go and then they go the first scientists to examine the Platypus thought that they had been fooled they were like what is this animal that you have presented us with this is like you sewed a duck bill and a and duck feet and Otter and a beaver together you think that's science it's not science and it's not funny but then they were like oops my bad that's a real animal and for a long time they thought it was like a bird or reptile because they lay eggs but in fact they are a mammal and they are one of two mammals in the whole world that lays eggs the other one being the AK kidna but we're not talking about Aid today we're talking about platypus says today boy platypuses have little venomous Spurs on their hind feet and they when they like get you they can like kill a medium-sized dog and they can severely incapacitate a humor so you know just watch out platter puses have very sensitive bills they have this ability is called Electro reception they have the ability to detect natural electric stimuli so like all of the the it's like the force they can feel the force that's what it is they they like they can feel all of the living things around them with their bill just their bill can and so it helps them detect prey and stuff like that it's almost exclusively in amphibious or aquatic aminals which the Platypus is so platypus can go underwater for like one or 2 minutes so not too long but longer than most humans can hold their breath for and when they go in the water little folds of skin uh close over over their ears and over their eyes and their nostrils are closed super tight so that no water can get in them and they're just like and they use their super sensitive duck bill to like scr on the ground like little like little piggies and just go and they get like crustations and worms and stuff like that and and then they go up and they like have all the food that they collected in little cheek pouches so they're like and so cute and then they go up to the surface and then they eat their food but they don't have any teeth and so they get like gravel and stuff like that and it helps them chew their food baby platypuses when they are born they have teeth but they lose them for whatever reason that's that's weird they have little webbed feet and it's it's cute cuz they paddle and then they steer with the tail and their feet but when they're on the land they're a little bit less graceful they they do a little bit of waddling and and no it's cute but when they're on land their webbing will like retract to reveal some claws so that they can get a little bit better footing when a mommy platypus lays her eggs the eggs will be with her she'll incubate them and sit on them and be with them for about 10 days and then they hatch but when they hatch they're only like the size of a lime of bean and this really really tiny and they're helpless and scared and they're like Mommy and so she she stays with them for like 3 or 4 months and they all just sort of lick her skin because they do platypuses do not have nipples they just have sweat glands and so they'll like just sort of secrete milk and the babies are like oh thanks Mom so like that's weird that's I wonder if there is pypus milk available on the market that's milk sweat you know in anime when they get real like nervous they get like big sweat drops that's thank you so much for watching we're gross and beautiful my name is Katie Wayne and if you would like to you can follow me on Twitter and request an animal for me to cover this week's anal was suggested by Robert Hillman so thank you so much they are very weird and beautiful and gross animals and you can check out these videos over here and please click the Subscribe button and and I just love you guys so much so much bye [Music]
