[Music] she seemed to be leading a fairy tale life with her husband and young son but was actually struggling with the high price of Fame stunning her fans in the music world Shania walked away from it all by 2008 her marriage collapsed her confidence was shattered and chia lost her ability to perform in her new Duck series on own why not with Shania Twain cameras follow shania's quest to find herself and her voice again before I go any further into the Tyranny I need to get to the bottom of what's going on with my boys physically so we're going to Nashville to once and for all clarify if there's anything wrong I'm fairly confident that there isn't anything wrong with my vocal cords but I want to make sure and safe M mommy things look great it just things just seem to be a little tight down there okay it's called dysphonia where the muscles just squeeze the voice box if you were to have nodules or pops or something like that they would be in this area right in here it's not just my singing voice it's my any voice right and that all stemming from just plain old fear stage Fray domestic violence in the home as a child uh my parents dying not what's next just all these different stages of fear in my life I've just trapped my own voice and uh now I've got to unwind all that wow it's really for anybody who's ever trapped your own voice yeah that series is and that's what Shai is talking about in her new book from this moment on she hasn't performed for an audience in nearly 5 years will you ever sing in public again I want to and that's the whole point of doing this I really can't imagine not singing again what happened to that woman well that woman was probably scared out of her wits at that moment as well I would already have been very afraid of being um in the spotlight at that I mean I always was afraid of it yeah what was fascinating to me is that you wrote that um you really were just trying to make enough money in the beginning to take care of your you know brothers and sisters and that you just wanted enough to have enough and that you weren't trying to be a star and that you were always more comfortable being in the background that you thought you'd be a great backup singer well because also that was my reality coming from where I came from it was it unimaginable to ever be wealthy for example that was just way too far out of my reach I like it's interesting how that conditioning you know even played out in other things in your life you saying when you would make dinner you would make just enough not enough to have leftovers just enough yes yeah you learn to be very realistic and I think that that's where that being conservative with food is I'm only going to cook what we need so that's what's so interesting about from this moment on over the years I've heard that story of women spiritually and emotionally losing their voices losing themselves it happened to you actually physically so why would it take you losing your voice to trigger you to you know regain yourself well my my fears and anxieties throughout my whole life had been slowly squeezing my my my voice um I was losing it slowly and progressively what happened is is when my marriage fell apart uh that particular crisis was almost the the straw that broke the camel's back of something that had already been building it was the turning point it was the little bit of extra weight that I could not handle and so it broke it all open and and so was very necessary absolutely necessary I love the term broken open it's a really we'll be right back coming up you are telling this person your problems exactly and they are with your husband only
