Maybe in the row in front or behind. And then if you are in junior high, you can be dismissed. All right, church. Let's go to the Lord in prayer. Heavenly Father, we uh we come before you tonight with thankful hearts. We um we're so thankful, Lord, for the for the farm across the street, the the amazing, bountiful harvest that you have uh provided, and that uh we'll go on to continue to bless um all the missions work.
We're uh we're so thankful, Lord, for the the men that went on the uh prison, the saints prison ministry, all the wonderful things that uh that they were able to accomplish through you and through your gospel. And we uh we praise you for the lives that were changed uh with that with that saint's prison ministry. And Lord, we uh we lift up the uh the children and the volunteers back there in Awana as it begins tonight.
We ask your blessing on it. Um and we know that uh that you will be um put forward and pressed on the hearts of uh of all those children. So Lord uh wherever we came from tonight, whatever the week has has presented us with, we want to remain thankful for all that you provide, um we ask your blessing on this Bible study tonight as Pastor Jeff brings the message. We love you, Lord. Amen. >> Amen. >> All right. Good evening, everybody.
Well, we've been doing a series through the summer called the A-list, and we conclude that tonight. Uh, unless one more A seems to come to mind in the next week or so. Uh, which there are a few, but I think, uh, we're going to jump into a book of the Bible next, uh, for the fall here. But, if you would take your Bibles and turn to Romans chapter 1. Our topic tonight is alternative lifestyles, which is really just a way of saying any lifestyle that is alternative to God's word.
We want to look at that from the perspective of the Bible. There are a lot of lifestyles that people have chosen in our world that the world celebrates and says is completely acceptable. But I just want to come out and say from the on the front end that this message like every message that I preach and every message that I pray that it's preached from this place would be preached from the perspective of heaven and eternity that I always want to think would I be able to say the same things I'm saying here from this place when I get to heaven where God is you know where everything is revealed.
Would I be able to preach the same way? Would I be worried about what people think whe what's the truth or not? Or would I be willing to just speak the truth knowing that God is the one behind the truth and and this is what his word said. So we always want to have an eternal perspective. One of the things I think that happens in uh Christianity is a lot of times we get faced with all kinds of questions because there's a lot of different lifestyles out there.
A lot of a lot of lifestyles, particularly the LGBTQ community, which is what we're going to really be dealing with tonight. Um, a lot of people have rebuttals. A lot of people have questions. A lot of people say there's certain things of the Bible. And a lot of people that are Christians don't really know how to respond. They kind of get back on their back foot and want to retreat because you don't have answers. But what what I want is for us to be equipped to be able to have biblical reason for why we believe what we believe.
Amen. >> So, Romans 1 is one of the great seven. Let me just give you the the the seven. This is called like the great seven when it comes to like the verses that you can go to when it talk when it talks about anything. When it comes to uh any alternate to one man, one woman in marriage when it comes to sexuality, when it comes to stuff like homosexuality or any kind of thing in that genre, the big seven of verses that you would go to would be these seven verses.
We're really going to zone in on Romans 1. I'll talk about the other ones as well, but people that say the Bible doesn't really have anything to say about this just haven't read the Bible. Romans 1 is one of the key texts. Uh we also have 1 Corinthians 6, 1 Timothy 1 8-11, Jude 1:7, 2 Peter 26-10, and then Leviticus 18, and Leviticus 20 verse 13. So we're going to look at those, but I want to start in Romans chapter 1.
And uh we're going to kind of talk about this because I want to show you that the Bible actually predicts that this is exactly the type of thing that will happen in a culture that uh moves away from the truth of God and the truth of God's word. When a culture rejects sort of a a world view that God is the creator and that he uh designed us and gets to dictate to us how we are to live. When the culture rejects that uh then what the Bible says is that a culture will exchange that truth for other things and for a lie that are lesser things than God.
And so it it's it's actually something that is predicted in the scripture. And so we're going to start in verse uh 19 of Romans chapter 1. Are you ready? >> All right. I'm not ready. Let me get there. And I, you know, as much as I say I want to preach this from the perspective of heaven, I also want to preach this from a perspective of earth because when Jesus came from heaven to this earth, it says that he was full of what?
Grace and truth, right? So yes, he spoke the truth, but it was full of grace. And my prayer is that uh this would be a message of grace because the world needs grace and the only antidote and the only thing that that's going to fix this world is God's grace in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Amen. So actually let's start in verse 18. It says this, "The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness." So I want you to notice the wrath of God here.
There's two types of wrath of God in the Bible. And this would be the first type. The first type is his passive wrath. The second type of his is his active wrath. When he's saying the wrath of God is being revealed from heaven, this is talking about his passive wrath. Passive wrath is the idea that the hand of God on a country, on a on a nation, on a community, whatever it is, if God's hand of protection is is there and the passive wrath is his hand begins to lift off of that nation.
In other words, he begins to give it over to its own desires and says, "Okay, if you don't want my hand in your life, I will retract my hand." That's his passive wrath. The act of wrath of God is the fist of God on mankind which will happen at the great tribulation. And you don't want to be here for that by the way. But that is his active wrath. But this is speaking of the passive wrath that the way that God typically works in a generation is whenever generations begin to depart from anything godly.
Uh there is no there is no generation that can last very long. And there's no culture that can last that will not selfimplode. In other words, if if there's if there's a culture that's completely selfish and self-centered and it does everything for itself, that is that is God's grace to take his hand off that and allow it to self-destruct so that people will begin to realize this is not the right way to live our lives.
Look, nothing's working. And so this was happening in the day that Paul wrote this. the Roman Empire was collapsing from within because the Roman Empire looked a lot like our world today. Romans 1 is really just America one, you know, it's like this it's our day right now. And he's saying the wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness.
Suppress the truth is this idea of pushing the truth down even though it's trying to surface and it can surface since what may be known about God is plain to them because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood by what by what is made, what has been made, so that men are without excuse. We talked about that when we were talking about atheism several weeks ago.
I'm not going to belabor the point, but there is this worldview, this atheistic worldview, evolutionary worldview, that we kind of came into existence by chance, that we're no different than animals. And if you have that kind of worldview, then you don't need a god to tell you how to live your life because we're just here and we can just decide for ourselves every man for himself. And so whenever that happens in a culture, the next thing to happen is this.
It says verse 21. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him. But their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and engaged exchanged, excuse me, the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. And now what I want to show you is Paul is going to talk about what was happening during his day in the Roman Empire.
And it's going to be a prediction of what will happen in every place. And this is exactly what has happened in our culture. So I want to show you there's three stages to a declining culture. And so let me just read this and then we'll go back to it. It says in verse 24, "Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desire of their hearts to sexual impurity, for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served created things rather than the creator who is forever praised.
Amen." And because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. And even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way, the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind to do what ought not to be done.
They become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of evil, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossip, slanderers, god-haters, insolent, arrogant, and boastful. They invent ways of doing evil and they disobey their parents. They are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. And although they know God's righteous decree, that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things, but also approve of those who practice them.
Now, I want to just say this in context. Paul's point uh when he says they know that they deserve death is not that they're the only ones that deserve death. His point is going to be in chapter two and chapter three that everybody deserves death because all sin the wages of sin is >> death but the gift of God is eternal life. In fact, um, all sin is, uh, payable on death according to God's righteous decree. But what Paul is doing here is he's talking about those that are living in unrighteousness, who are suppressing the truth that they still have no excuse.
And uh, the the the thing that I that I want to point out is this is very similar in our culture today. Like what we're seeing today is symptomatic of a culture who has turned away from God's word and God's ways. And this is a repeat of what happened in the Roman era. In the Roman era, do do you want the good news or the bad news first? Which which would you like first? I'll give you the bad news first. The bad news is everything we h we see going on in our world today, the bad news is it will self-destruct.
The good news is when it begins, and it's already beginning. when it selfdestructs, what it is is God's grace to allow people to realize this is not the way the designer made it. And it will be the the the greatest moment in the in these moments, the greatest moment for the gospel to be presented. In fact, you could argue that one of the things that kept the Roman government going after it imploded was the gospel of Christ that got uh put into all the all the towns and nations and cities all around and eventually reset certain things and in and began the Christian Judeo world view all across the world.
And so I do want to say that the hope is the gospel. Amen. That is the hope that we have. That's the good news that when the world is self-destructing, the only noticeable solution should be the gospel of Jesus Christ and his grace. And so what it says here is they exchange wisdom for foolishness. They exchange the creator for creation. They exchange the truth of God for a lie. They exchange worship for idolatry. But I just want to present this that God's exchange is so much greater because he exchanges his own son's life for you to have righteousness and to be able to go to heaven.
Amen. >> He exchanges his grace for our faith. And that's beautiful. But basically his point, Paul's point in chapter one is that all creation is like a big billboard that says there's a creator. There's a creator. There's a creator, everybody. There's a creator. All creation is shouting there's a creator. And if there's a creator that means if there's design then there's a designer and that means that we are his design that we are accountable to the designer and he gets to tell us how to live our lives and so to acknowledge the existent of the existence of God and to acknowledge that God is greater than me is to acknowledge that I have a moral responsibility to obey him and live for him as he deems fit.
But a rebellious, sinful society who wants to live in sin, what's the first thing a society will have to do? They're going to have to get rid of God or at least get rid of the idea that there's a God who requires a certain type of lifestyle and a God who judges those who live contrary to those laws. But Paul says that that is a suppression of the truth and people are still without excuse even if they believe that. And so he he basically gives us these three stages, symptomatic stages in a society that has rejected God.
And he says three different times in verse 24, verse 26, and verse 28, it says God gave them over. That's his way of lifting his hand, lifting his hand, lifting his hand even more. And this is a sort of the stages in every society that I believe we can correlate to our world today. These three symptomatic stages in a society that rejected God. Number one is sexual impurity in verse 24. Let me read it again. It said, "Therefore, God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another." And then it goes on, they exchanged the truth of God for a lie.
They said, "Hey, it's my body. I can do whatever I want with it. It's just two consenting adults. Um, doesn't really matter. Sex isn't really sacred." And so this is actually what happened in history. And you can actually see this in world history in our own country. It's interesting because even though these things always existed, there's a difference between them existing and sort of being in existence and sort of underground to the point where they become celebrated in a culture.
You get what I mean? Like there used to be a time where the where sexual immorality when I say sexual immorality, the Bible calls it fornication. and that means sex outside of marriage. That that was not acceptable. But by the 1950s um it began to begin acceptable. And it's interesting because right at 1950 was the acceptance of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. That became the normal way that everybody biologists and scientists saw the world.
That became the worldview. An evolutionary worldview. Isn't it interesting that in that moment is when the sexual revolution sprang forth in the 1960s the sexual revolution was in full swing and at that very time. School sponsored prayer became illegal in public schools. Uh school sponsored Bible reading was outlawed. All of that got flipped around. The truth of God became suppressed. uh at that very time um in the 70s uh abortion became legal and then in 1970 pornography became legal and so that's stage one we see that in our world.
Then stage two and you can just leave those up on the screen. Stage two uh is homosexuality in verse 26. This will be the next stage like this is the normal thing that will happen in a society that rejects God as designer and suppresses a truth for a lie. It says in verse 26, because of this God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. That's lesbianism. And in verse 27, in the same way, men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another.
I want you to notice the Bible says natural relations with women and men were inflamed with lust for one another, indicating that this is not a natural relationship because that's not the natural way that God has designed it. So, you're moving from natural sin between a man and a woman outside of marriage. It's still a natural sin by design. Uh it's still in congruence with design with a man and woman. But then it moves to outside of design with a man and a man and a woman and a woman.
And it says men committed indecent acts with other men and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. So homosexuality was the next stage in a society that would turn away from God. Now we see this in our own society that by 1980 after the sexual revolution took root and all these other things happened by 1980 porn became commonplace. Strip clubs were everywhere. movies were full of immorality and AIDS and HIV were a pandemic along with other with all these other STDs and it's at that time that homosexuality began to become more accepted in the society and so stage two in the early 90s the term LGB emerged and then by the end of the 90s LGBT was an established identity and in 2000 they added a Q And by 2010, there was an I and an A.
And in 2015, uh, same-sex marriage became legal nationwide, and we were officially in stage two. Uh, by 2020, the acronym became LGBTQIA plus. And then during COVID to the present time 2026, they added uh 2S and now they want to add an F for furry, a GQ for gender queer, an NB for non-binary, an A for questioning. Um, but they just put a plus there now. But I don't think that's going to be acceptable because why do all these other people get to be in the name, but why do I get a plus?
And so there's a whole fight going on. And many of the people that originally began the LGBT movement are saying, "Hey, we didn't we never saw these people being part of our thing." Um, and they're starting to say, "We don't even want to be associated with this." But the rainbow flag has become the gang sign of everything and anything. And now it moves into stage three, which is verse 28. Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind.
And that's the third thing, mental depravity. Verse 28. And I want you to see the amount of things that he lists when it comes to mental depravity. And me, when it says depraved or reprobate, some of your Bibles may say a depraved mind means uh that it's a mind that proves itself to have left all reason and human logic. Do you feel like we're in a world now that has left all reason and human logic in many ways? In fact, if you have reason and human logic, you can start a podcast tomorrow and you'll get some traction because there's not a lot of people with human logic.
That's one of the reasons why some of these guys, even if they're not Christians, if they have any kind of logic, they will make it in this world because a lot of people don't. Um, but do we live in a world that has really gone off the deep end mentally? I mean, you could talk about the fact that uh that this has been surfacing for years. I remember before uh before the world sort of lost its mind in the COVID era, which is really where it all really went loose with uh you know, all of the wokeism and critical race theory and all of those things.
Up to that point, there was already signs of all of it happening. You know why? Because I remember I don't know like 20 years ago now it's been since I've been talking about this saying hey we've been in stage two we've been in stage two but we're headed into stage three because the world's starting to lose its mind because you started to see school shootings happening everywhere where people were just losing their mind.
You're starting to see so many different indications of uh all of these things. And so this has been happening for some time where human logic is being has been so buried and people are just sort of hardwired into this viewpoint that there is no God and that in that uh we don't have anything accountable and they just believe the world's way. And honestly I grew up in the 90s or I grew up in the 1900s by the way sounds like a lot.
It sounds so old when I say that but I remember a day when there were only two genders and only three letters. Like that's the day I grew up in. It was just two genders, male and female. That's the only genders there were. Nobody questioned it. And there was just three letters, LGB. That was it. Now there's an infinite number of genders, cis. I I don't even know them all. Right? There's new ones they're inventing every day.
That's what it says. They invent new ways for things to right here. Let me just read the rest of this. Right? It says in uh verse 29, they have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, depravity. They're full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They're gossip, slanders, god-haters, insulent, arrogant, and boastful. They invent ways of doing evil and disobey their parents. They are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
But notice, they invent ways of doing evil. They invent ways of doing evil. Like, there's so many new inventions of sin. It's not really a new um it's it's not really a new principle. It's just the the invention of sin is something that's been here forever. It's just there's there's just new ways to invent the same principle of inventing sin. So now the stage three is in full effect where it's not just sexual immorality.
It's not just homosexuality. Now it's transgender, cisgender, every gender drag drag queen show at show and tell at kindergarten. Drag queen show and tell at the churches in some places in America. Uh rainbow colored communion bread. I just saw that they have in certain churches to bring unity. I mean, how blasphemous is that rainbow colored communion bread? So, the question is when did stage three be begin? Well, I believe we saw a clear crossing over into the mental depravity stage right around COVID.
I mean, it was before that, but during that time, there was a clear shift that happened that was greater than I've seen in a long time. And if you knew Romans 1 headed into it, you could have picked up on it. But with mass shootings, gender identity, politics, wokeism, and critical race theory, we are definitely in stage three. And it goes on to say verse 32, although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things, but they approve of those who practice them.
We live in a world now that believes in tolerance except for the tolerance of anyone who would be intolerant toward their tolerance. Right? So Christians uh are allowed to be celebrated as long as they don't disagree with anybody, you know, which is funny because I thought tolerance was was without was not to be intolerant. But um the world is saying you got to celebrate all of this. It's not enough to just allow it and say, "Okay, I'm not going to bother my neighbor." But you have to actually celebrate it.
And um I like this uh synopsis from a guy by the name of Virgil Walker. He says this, "How do we go from homosexuality being a sinful act to a sacred identity? The shift has reshaped morality, law, and even the meaning of humanity itself. Here's how it happened and why it matters. For most of human history, homosexuality was understood as a behavior, not an identity. It was a sinful act like adultery or fornication. You did it.
It didn't define you. In the late 1800s, secular psychologists like Craft, Ebbing, and Freud rewrote the script. And as early as craft evsia sexualis in 1886, homosexuality was reframed from sin to a psycho to a psychological disorder laying the groundwork for today's identity politics. Sin was no longer rebellion against God. It was now a medical diagnosis. Then came the sexual revolution in the 1960s. And in 1973, under political pressure, not science, the APA erased homosexuality from the list of disorders, activists seized the moment.
Gay rights equals civil rights. Critique behavior equal hate the person and sin was now sacred. Today we are told, "Your sexuality is who you are. To question it is violence. To call for repentance is hate." But scripture tells us a different story. You are not your temptations, nor your sinful desires. You were made in the image of God. Your identity is not found in rebellion. It's found in redemption. And this shift from behavior to identity wasn't liberation.
It was deception. It robbed sinners of hope and redefined freedom as slavery to desire. It declared war on God's design. End quote. See, what's at the bottom of all of these issues? I think it's the word choice. At the end of the day, people believe that they can make a choice to be whatever they want to be. Uh, except being a Christian, that's not allowed. But if you want to be whatever you want to be and believe whatever you want to believe, that's fine.
Unless it's being a Christian that believes in the Bible. Um, it's funny because like an 11year-old that wants to be baptized, unbelievers are like, "They're too young, you know, let them make up their mind when they're older, but if they're seven, they can have a transgender surgery, right?" Right? And everybody applauds. Applause. Right? Tolerance is the philosophy that accompanies them all. A study was done where they asked a thousand people what their number one objective to Christian objection to Christianity was.
And the number one thing they said was intolerance. You know the old definition of intolerance was. The old definition was we should be tolerant of other people's beliefs, respect people of different faiths, and agree to disagree. And I'm cool with that. like okay live and let live and those kind of things right the new definition of tolerance is this you have to approve of me and endorse me otherwise you hate me you're not allowed to disagree or you can disagree but if you disagree you still can't say I'm wrong and you're right now you have to say your truth is my truth my truth is my truth so your truth is your truth my truth is my truth so the really the new tolerance is be tolerant of everyone and everything except intolerance which in and of itself is intolerance I'm sorry I think about this stuff way too much but anyway So our culture is very intolerant in the name of tolerance.
So if you disagree, so if I disagree with you, I'm intolerant. But if you disagree with me, you're tolerant. That's how that's the world that we live in, right? So if you believe one thing but you don't believe everything, that makes you a bigot. Um, and so this is what Paul is saying. We live in a world, he lived in a world where everybody celebrated sin. And to stand out as a Christian in his day was like putting a big giant, you know, a big giant X on yourself to say, "Hey, I'm I'm not like everybody else." But you know what?
That's what a Christian's called to be, not like everybody else. We're called to be holy. We're called to be set apart. We're not supposed to be of this world. You know, the world, the definition of worldliness is this idea that we're of this world. And worldliness, what worldlininess does is it brings hell up to this world. You know what godliness does? We're supposed to be godly, not worldly. And what we're supposed to do is bring heaven down to this world.
We're supposed to be bringing heavenly influence, God's design into this world. Jesus said that means you'll be a light in the darkness, which means you're going to be noticed. There's no way to hide. If you want to live a life, a true life of Christianity, according to the scripture, you're going to you're going to be noticed. You're going to stick out. You're not going to be accepted by everybody, but you are going to be loved by God and and and you can still do it in a way that's loving.
Now, I'm going to look at the rest of these passages here. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 is another one of the top seven. It says this, "Do you not know that uh wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God?" Now, I want you to notice the list here. Basically, what he's saying is not everybody that claims to be going to heaven is going to heaven. If people live like hell, they're not going to heaven. Repentance is key. But what he doesn't mean is if you struggle with any sin because every one of us will find ourselves struggling with some of these things, right?
Anybody ever struggle with sexual temptation? You don't have to raise your hand. Anybody ever struggle with idolatry, putting money before God or putting stuff or right? Has anybody ever struggled with certain things? So it's not about struggling but it's about saying this is who I am and I'm sticking to it and I don't want to change. I want to celebrate this kind of lifestyle. He says anybody who says that about things that God has clearly said are rebellion against him.
He says they will not inherit the kingdom of God. Do not be deceived. We live in a world that's deceived. We live in a world where a lot of people claim to be Christians that say this is who I am and it doesn't matter what anybody says. He says, "Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolattors, nor adulterers, nor men who have sex with men, that's the homosexuality uh world, nor thieves, nor greedy, nor drunkers, nor slanderers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." So, people will say, "Well, I'm a Christian.
I can be a Christian and be gay." Okay. And I would say if you struggle with same-sex attraction, but you recognize it as sin and you don't agree with it, then you can be a Christian. That's that's I don't have a problem with that. But if you say that I can celebrate and be uh living a homosexual life and same-sex marriage and all those things and still be a Christian, the Bible would say I disagree. It would be like someone saying I can be a thief and I can be an adulterer and still be a Christian.
Well, you can struggle with uh adulterous thoughts. You can even commit adultery, but you better repent of it after you do, right? You can't just say, "Well, it doesn't matter. I'm a Christian. I'm just going to keep committing adultery and I'm fine. I'm going to heaven." No, you better question your salvation. If you can continue to rob banks every day and think you're going to heaven, I don't think that's what the Bible would teach.
And so, Paul is saying, "Hey, don't be deceived." There's a lot of people that are deceived thinking that they can live like hell and still go to heaven. And that's not the truth. Now 1 Timothy is another one. It says 1 Timothy 1 8-11. It says, "We know the law is good if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous, but for lawb breakakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unhol the unholy and religious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality." Notice practicing homosexuality. for slave traders and liars and perjurers and for whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine.
So he's basically saying homosexuality is contrary to the sound doctrine of the gospel that Paul preached. Second Peter 2:6-10 talks about the fact that God condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah referring to Genesis 19 by burning them to ashes and made them example of what's going to happen to the ungodly. It says if you rescued Lot a righteous man who was distressed by the depraved conduct of lawless men. So he says that Genesis 19 was depraved conduct of lawless men which was sodomy according to Genesis 19 and Jude 1:7 reiterates the same thing second Peter says and actually uh adds a few things to it.
It says in verse four of Jude 1, for certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only sovereign Lord. See, there were people even in Jude's day that were saying, "We are Christians. We have a church in town where the pastor approves of these kind of things." And he's saying, "These are individuals that have secretly slipped in among you that are perverting the grace of God into a license for immorality." And then he goes to give several examples of that in world history.
And another example that he gives is in verse 7 the example of Sodom and Gomorrah. He says just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire which is actually the word in the in the Greek strange flesh when it talks about the homosexuality that was committed that serves an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. So, the Bible is very clear.
And then the two main Old Testament passages, and there's many more that allude to this, but the two clear Old Testament passages are from Leviticus chapter 18 and chapter 20. Leviticus 18:22 says, "Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, that is detestable." And then Leviticus 20:13 says, "If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. they are to be put to death.
Their blood will be on their own heads. And so this is something that God has very clearly said in the Old Testament. It was a capital crime. Now, that's not what I'm advocating for today, but I do want to point this out. Some people say, "Well, God also forbid eating shrimp in the Old Testament." But I do want to say that eating shrimp and gay sex are not the same thing. It's not apples to apples, first of all. Second of all, there is no uh death penalty for eating something that for eating shrimp.
Uh third of all, in the New Testament, it clearly lifts that rule and that was only that rule was only given to Israel to be set apart as a nation. And so in the context, it's much different. Uh Leviticus 18 and Leviticus 20 are all the sexual sins listed that God says do not commit. And that's one of them. Beastiality is another one that is mentioned right next to that one. And no one would argue that that's acceptable.
Uh and in in our day, at least I hope not. Right? And so, uh this was no one would say, well, God, you know, God forbid shrimp, so so you know, we're allowed to eat shrimp, so now we're allowed to commit beastiality. You'd be like, stop. That's ridiculous. Right? So, you can't take that argument, and I'm going to explain that a little bit more, but I want to show this as well. Um, Genesis 19, it talks about Sodom and Gomorrah.
Judges 19, it talks about another thing like Sodom and Gomorrah that happened even in the nation of Israel. Um, but one of the things people say when it comes to Leviticus is, okay, granted, Jeff, you you really, you're correct. You can't get away from the fact that God did forbid did forbid homosexuality to the Jewish people in the Old Testament. A lot of people when they study it, they can't deny that God did say, but then they'll say, "But that was only to Israel.
He never said anything to the other nations." And so therefore, it falls into the same category as seafood and all of those things. Well, here's the problem with that. Leviticus 18 specifically says after it lists all of the sexual sins including homosexuality. It says that this is the very reason that God judged all of the surrounding nations that Israel is about to go in uh to possess. It says this in Leviticus 18.
Just listen in verse 22. It says, "Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman. That's detestable. Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways because that is how the nations I'm going to drive out before you became defiled. Even the land was defiled. So I punished it for its sin. Notice God punished previous nations for the sin of homosexuality. And now he's saying to Israel, do not commit this same sin.
Because this is the reason that these other nations were punished. And this is what Paul is mentioning about the passive wrath of God in a nation that embraces these things is the land will vomit the inhabitants out. And some of that has to do with, I don't know, volcanoes and floods and all of these things. Now it says, "I punished it for its sins, and the land vomited out its inhabitants, but you must keep my decrees and laws, and that's for everybody in the land, the nativeborn and the foreigner, the foreigners residing among you, must not do any of these detestable things.
For all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you. Everyone who does any of these detestable things, such persons must be cut off from their people. Keep my requirements and do not follow any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you came. And do not defile yourself with them.
I am the Lord your God. So, those are the the big seven. And that's all we're really going to look at tonight, the big seven. But I want to I want to answer three of the most common objections to this um understanding of homosexuality when it comes to the biblical understanding. And uh and then I'll open it up to some questions. Let me just say this though. There's a part I didn't read in the first Corinthians passage that I want to read real quick.
In first Corinthians where it says wrongdoers won't inherit the kingdom of God. It says in verse 11, 6:1, I want you to notice this, and this is where God's grace comes in. Uh 1 Corinthians 6 11, it says, "And that's what some of you were, but you were washed. You were sanctified. You were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the spirit of our God." Which tells us that there were people living these kind of lifestyles where Paul was preaching the gospel and they were getting saved out of it.
They were getting cleansed and set free because of the gospel of Jesus. And I believe that same gospel sets people free today. And there's many testimonies and stories even in our own church of how God has done and is doing that very same thing. Amen. All right. So, three common objections and then I'll be done. People say Jesus was silent on the issue of homosexuality or LGBTQ or whatever. Um, so therefore, if Jesus was silent, then we really shouldn't talk about it.
Well, let me just give you some apologetics for this kind of argument. Um, when when it says Jesus was sign on the issue, I would say no. He talked about the positive aspect of how it is supposed to be done by talking about male and female in marriage. And just because Jesus never specifically addressed something doesn't mean by default that he's okay with it, right? Like he never specifically addressed incest or beastiality or rape, but we wouldn't say he never addresses, so therefore it's fine, right?
Uh he referred to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah as a judgment of God in Luke 17:29. You could argue he did talk about it because it said, "But on that day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all." So he's saying that the judgment of Genesis 19 of Sodom and Gomorrah was something that really did happen and that was a righteous judgment of God. So you could argue that he did talk about it.
Furthermore, the Holy Spirit ultimately wrote the Bible, right? And seven times in the New Testament and in the Old, we are specifically told that homosexuality is a sin. Uh and several more indirectly mention it as a sin. And I could give you a lot more, but um it is interesting to note that all Jewish writings and Christian writings interpret all of these seven verses to mean that all forms of same gender sexual activity are off limits to God's people.
So for 4,000 years, the Jews, all of the writings, hand down, all of the Jews believe that homosexuality was sin. For the last 2,000 years, all of the Christians in all of their writings believe that as well. And it's only been in the last 50 years now that all of the sudden, it's been discovered that everyone has been wrong about the interpretation. for the last 4,000 years until now. And coincidentally, the true meaning has just so happened to be discovered by those who identify as gay and lesbian theologians.
I just find that interesting. But here's the thing. People will argue uh there isn't a Bible passage that directly disapproves of it. those ones that you're mentioning are all ones that are really talking about maybe idolatry or or sort of temple worship or male prostitutes or rape or what are those things? But that's kind of an argument that you really can't make because here's the thing. There's there isn't a single passage in the Bible that positively approves, blesses, commands, or represents a same-sex sexual relationship as morally acceptable.
To the contrary, the Bible has nothing but negativity to speak of any type of relationship when it comes to that. Number two, the next rebuttal that you hear sometimes with people when you talk to people is, "Well, I was born this way. Why would God make me this way?" Anybody ever heard this one? Um, by the way, the whole argument of people were born this this way. It's been proven that there is no such thing as a gay gene.
Um they prove this because they take two identical twins which have the same DNA and uh if the idea that your DNA is what gives you the identity of sexuality then it would be a logical conclusion that every identical twin would identify the same way. But it's interesting because it's it's it's never that way. It's usually at 50/50 at best. uh most um that it's it's not that way for um so for the majority of people that would say I was born this way.
Why would God make me this way? What I would say is God didn't make you this way. The fall made you this way. You know, the Bible says that all of us have been broken since the fall. That when when I talk about the fall, I'm talking about Genesis 3. You guys following me? like Genesis 3 when the fall happened what that means is all of us are born with sinful desires with a fallen nature which means that we are born with sinful desires but just because we have sinful desires and we were born with sinful desires doesn't mean that we should give into them right Jesus said you must be born again people say well I always had these feelings I didn't choose it well listen carefully just because someone experiences an impulse and attraction or desire without choosing it doesn't mean that acting on it is morally permissible take Anger for instance, right?
Anybody ever have anger? They didn't choose anger, but just you felt anger. It came like does that mean that you should just give into it, right? Like no. And and so like and I'm preaching to myself right now when I'm driving, right? That's not it chooses me. It ch it it I didn't choose it. It chooses me, right? Um jealousy. You might feel jealous. Sexual attraction. Someone might feel sexual attraction to another person, but if they're not married there, that's called fornication.
And if you give into that sexual attraction, if you are married and you have sexual attraction to someone that's not your husband or wife, that's called adultery and you're told to not give into it. So just because you feel some sort of way doesn't justify giving into it, right? Greed, suicidal thoughts, intrusive thoughts, self harm, murderous thoughts, etc. The question is not do you choose to feel this way. The question is what should I do with what I feel?
And the question is, do do my feelings dictate morality and truth or does God's word dictate it? And do I put my feelings as the caboose, not the not the driving force of the train? Right? And then number three, and I'll be done. People say, "Well, we're two consenting adults. We're not hurting anyone. Can't you just kind of leave us alone?" Well, we've crossed over that kind of boundary because now everybody is trying to force down everybody's throat the the belief to celebrate that you have to call me by my gender or my whatever my pronoun is and you have to agree and you have to celebrate it.
It isn't just that. But even if it was just that, just take just take that argument and let's dissect it for a second. We're not hurting anyone. Just take that one. Does it just because you're not hurting anyone, does that mean it's not sin? Take idolatry for instance. If someone commits idolatry, like they make an idol and they bow down to it. Like there's some really nice Buddhists out there. There's some really nice people that don't hurt any.
They're pacifists, right? But they worship little idols and they're not hurting anybody. But is that still sin? According to God, he says, "Do not bow down to a statue or an idol." Right? So you can't argue that just because I'm not hurting anybody, it's not sin. The other thing is we're two consenting adults. Again, just because you're two consenting adults doesn't mean it's okay. That's what adultery is. Two consenting adults, right?
But it's still adultery, right? So, two consenting adults, it it it doesn't matter. That doesn't mean it's okay. Um, but I would say any kind of sexual sin can hurt people. In in heterosexual sin, children are born out of wedlock all the time. And the children are hurt by that. You know, the odds of success for some for a child that's born out of wedlock are a lot harder. It's a lot harder for a single mom to raise a to raise a kid and be there in their in their life.
That's why we have the church here to help any single moms in the place or any single dads in the place to help you and and and and everything else. And but but kids are hurt by that. Babies are aborted for sexual sin. But we could argue that when it comes to homosexual uh acts, it does contribute to an imploding society. And not to mention the ST STDs that are spread hurt a lot of people and its highest rate is within the homosexual community.
In fact, when it comes to the heterosexual community, um heterosexual men, about one in 524 heterosexual men that sleep around will con will uh one in 524 contract a sexually transmitted disease. About one in 253 women that are heterosexual will contract a sexually transmitted disease. But men who have sex with men in a homosexual relationship, about one in six will contract a homos, you know, a um uh a sexually transmitted disease.
So it does hurt people. People that are sleeping around, people that are doing all these things, they're hurting people by spreading certain things. So that's not really an argument. In closing, I just want to say this. The Bible goes on to say in Leviticus 27-8, after it talks about homosexuality, it says, "Consecrate yourselves and be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy." So God says, "Be holy because I am holy." He doesn't say, "Be hetero because I'm hetero or be homo because I'm homo." Like I'm not trying to be reverent.
He says, "Be holy because I'm holy." That is the identity you're to take on. Amen. So a lot of people take this identity, their identity is their sexuality. It's not like move from homosexual identity to I'm a heterosexual. No, none of that ma what matters is that we're to live holy lives. A holy life is a is a life consecrated, set apart as sacred. It's a life that considers yourself sacred to God and a life that is committed to live a life in accordance with God's original design and choice for your life.
So when it comes to alternative, there is no alternative to God's design. And if you want to live an alternative lifestyle, be alternative to all the other lifestyles out there in the world, right? Um he says, "Keep my decrees and follow them. I am the Lord who makes you holy, who sanctifies you. Don't follow the world the world. Follow the word and God can change you." Um God is wanting to sanctify you so that you won't sin.
And holiness is ultimately setting the issue ahead of time that in order to follow God, you won't always fit in with this world. You won't always be accepted by this world. And if you're going to follow God, you're going to stand out as different. And we got to be people of distinction. And I will say this, change is not the absence of temptation. Uh we all get tempted in many ways. Many of us still struggle with a lot of things.
The struggle actually proves that you have convictions still. And so don't condemn yourself if you struggle with any sin. And none of us should condemn anyone else. Right? If anything, we should be loving our neighbors and trying to bless them and trying to win them to Christ and show them that we love them and tell them that there's a God who loves them because at the end of the day, everybody is created in the image of God and they're valued and they're loved by God.
Amen. And a lot of people just don't know. They've just been sold a bill of goods. They've just been told this. They've been hardwired to believe a certain way. And what we have is unique opportunity in our world right now as the as the you know the culture is sort of imploding within itself for the gospel to take root in a way that never has before. So let me ask let me uh open it up to just a few questions. I'm invite the worship team up.
Does anybody have any questions with with with these things? >> Joe in the back. Yeah. So the Bible says to love your neighbor as yourself, right? So that we should never ever do anything to harm anybody. We should never hate anybody. My question though would be what is their definition of hate? Because the world's definition of hate is if you don't celebrate me, you hate me. But God's definition of love is if if I don't tell you the truth, I don't love you.
Right? So, I think it I think it actually boils down to sort of a definition that people sometimes have. The world has convinced everybody that if you don't celebrate and agree with everybody's choices, then you're hateful. That's actually not the biblical definition of hate. The biblical definition of hate is seeing someone doing something that can eventually harm themselves or send them to an eternity without God and never telling them anything.
I I could argue that's more hateful than telling them the truth. Here's what the Bible actually says. It says that the fear of man is a snare, which is like a trap, but the fear of the Lord keeps a person safe. So, I think a lot of times we can get caught up in worrying about they might think that I hate them. But one of the things that we can do, and maybe you guys can discuss this among yourselves, is we can still bless people.
We can bless, you know, Jesus said to bless those who persecute you. Pray for your enemies. They're not even our enemies necessarily, right? Like anybody can be our enemy. They're not they don't necessarily have to be our enemy. They can be somebody that's super kind that lives next door to you. And the Bible actually says when it comes to like the world, like you'd have to leave the world in order to to avoid them. And if somebody claims to be a Christian and wants to insist that that you have to celebrate their lifestyle, that's different than somebody who's not a Christian and just is caught up in any kind of lifestyle, right?
I mean the same way we love anybody else in any other situation is how we should love them. So we we should be more loving. We should be uh loving. But I do think that we have to speak the truth in love. And love doesn't always look like um never saying anything that might disagree with them. Does that make sense? Any other questions? to jail from >> I'll be doing prison ministry from the inside. I actually don't think we'll be going to jail.
I think can I think you got to move to Canada for that for the next five years. But um uh yeah, I mean I there's a lot there's there's people in our church that are dealing with that. There's there's people that that deal with that. Um I think it would be in the same category as any other any other situation of any other sin. Uh I think it becomes harder when they insist that it's compatible with Christianity. And I think again standing your ground on the word Jesus made very a very um hard statement when he said unless you love your mother, brother, sister, daughter, son more than me, you can't be my disciple.
So, it's in those situations where I've seen a lot of Christians when their child comes out as gay or transgender, they they abandon the word of God and choose their child over God. And we shouldn't do that. That doesn't mean that we don't have open arms and we love them and we still treat them with dignity and value and we pray for them every day. But I think every family has to make a decision. Where do you draw the line?
Because if you have a child that ends up getting married to another person of the same gender, do you have them over for Thanksgiving? Do you teach the rest of your f like if you have young kids, do you normalize it? I think every family member needs to really pray about whether or not that would be condoning and celebrating sin. Same question with a with a gay wedding because that's comes up a lot with a lot of people.
I'll save you from asking the question, right? Is it okay for Christians to go to a gay wedding? thought really deep and hard about this and I've heard arguments on both sides about, you know, reaching your friends and your neighbors. But at the end of the day, in my heart of hearts, what is a wedding? A wedding is a celebration of two people becoming one. And so in my heart of hearts, I could never go to a gay wedding because in my mind that like what am I going to do?
Not I'm not going to stand. I'm not going to clap. Like if you do go to a gay wedding and you sit there and applaud it when they kiss each other, you are celebrating sin. You are saying this is something that I approve that God disapproves. So that's not something that I could do personally. Now are there instances where there might be a way to to I don't I don't know. I think we really need to pray hard through those things.
We live in a very complicated world with those things now. But what I think God would want us to do is stay true to his word and stay gracious and stay loving. Amen. >> Yeah, I would have to know the scenario and everything, but >> Yeah. Yeah. And we always have to remember like like how many of you are like like came from a a non-Christian family and you had no idea that that porn was even a sin or that any like there's a lot of things that that people are just have no clue about and everybody celebrates.
So so we have to have grace for people, right? Amen. All right. Well, let's close in prayer. Father, thank you so much for your word tonight. I pray that we would be a people of grace, Lord, but we would be a people of grace and truth, God, that you would just encourage each and every person here, Lord. Uh, as much as this becomes sort of the the thing that oftenimes can divide people, I pray that your word would unify your flock tonight around your truth and your word.
And Lord, that we would not be known as anybody would that this church would never be known for any kind of hatred, Lord, but we would be known for our love. And Lord, that we would also be known as a pillar of truth in this community, Lord, because we love this world and we love this na this town and this nation and this state, Lord. And we want we don't want to see it unravel. We want to see your design flourishing in this world.
We want to see the gospel flourishing. We want to people we want to see people being set free. We don't want to see people becoming more and more desensitized to your to your word. And Lord, I do pray for the families that have different issues going on where their kids or their family members or maybe some of their friends have chosen a lifestyle like this. Lord, I pray that you'd give them grace to know how to navigate through the turbulent waters in a way that is true to your heart.
Lord, that Lord, you you are a God of love and a God of forgiveness. And may we never forget that and lose sight of it. We pray this all in Jesus name. Amen. >> Amen.
