Stop Wasting Money on Peat Moss! Better Lawn Seeding with a Sun Joe Dethatcher transcript

What's going on, good people? So, many of us are overseating, doing bare ground renovations, or fixing damaged areas that may look like this. So, in this video, I'm going to be very brief, very quick, and show you how to get the [music] best establishment of that new seed, just like the pros do, without using that expensive equipment that they have or [music] Pete Moss. So, the pros have been doing this for years, and I've been talking about this for years.

It's not using Pete Moss. And what it is is incorporating the seed into the soil. [music] So, we know that seed to soil contact is one of the most important things [music] that we need for great germination and establishment of that new seed. But incorporating it into the seed, a lot of the pros use some large and expensive equipment that as homeowners, we really don't have the use for or the wallet for to be able to go support that.

But the one piece of equipment that you probably already have in your garage is a good old SunJoe. You can use this exact same [music] piece of equipment to get those results exactly like the pros do with their seating [music] method. So, the good thing about the SunJoe is you can either use the scarifying attachment or the deatching attachment. I tend to prefer the deatching [music] attachment. Uh you could use either one.

Uh and also [music] the Sunjo has the adjustable points here uh that you can use to get the height right that you need. [music] So the goal is for us to come just across the top of the surface with those tons and stir up that seed and soil [music] right across the top layer and incorporate that seed right into the soil. I've been [music] doing this for years and using this method. Uh you can even go back to a full video that I did last year where I use a rented [music] power rake uh which accomplishes the same thing.

That's another option. Uh, and you know, I've always talked about using [music] the garden weasel or the cultivator. That's also another method. Uh, [music] but if you have larger areas, I know people have mentioned like, Cam, I've got 5,000 square ft. I've got [music] 6,000 square foot. I can't do that with a cultivator, but you do have one of these, or you can go rent one of the power rakes uh that they have uh at your local rental store.

So, it may take you a couple adjustments to get the height right of where you want it to be. Uh, but you can just use this adjustment. You're not trying to dig down into the soil very much. [music] You just want to come right across the top of that soil surface and incorporate that seed in. So, let's get to it. We're going to try this area out that we've got to do right here. We've got two more [music] areas that we've also got to take care of, but this method works.

All right, let's get into it. You don't have to [music] go buy any of that expensive Pete Moss that seems to go up by increments of five bucks every year. [music] So save yourself some money. Use the equipment that you probably already have in your garage [music] to get the results that you're looking for. All right, here we go. All right, so we're going to do this real time. Um, I typically like to have the soil a [music] little bit drier than this, but we actually got rain last night, which was good for the seed.

Uh, I actually didn't get a chance to incorporate this into [music] the soil before it rained last night. Just ran out of time. Uh, but what we're going to [music] do is we want those tons to just come across this surface to incorporate that seed [music] into this soil. Stir it up a little bit. It'll drop that seed right back down there. And [music] most of the seed that you're seeing should disappear. So, I'm going to start at [music] a setting zero on the SunJoe. and we will adjust as needed to get the results that we're looking for.

All right, let's get to it. All right, so looking at that, you can see nothing [music] really happened. It moved a little bit of cedar around high spot here, so it hit that a little bit. As I said, I tend to like this to be a little [music] bit drier, but what we're going to do, we're going to drop the SunJoe down a notch and try [music] this again. All right, that's down one notch. And let's see what we got. All right, that's all the way down.

All right, that's the next from the lowest setting. Let's see what we get. And that is better. It's starting to incorporate some of that seed. Uh you can really see it over here. So, this is what we're [music] looking for. You're starting to see that seed disappear. It looks like in this area here, we'll probably just go with the lowest setting that we've got. We'll give it a try and see what it does. You can [music] see the difference.

Seed just sitting on top of the soil. Seed incorporated into the soil. That's the difference. This seed is exposed to air, the wind, drying out, the sun, all of that. This seed here has some soil around it to have [music] some protection around it and it keeps some of that moisture around the seed to improve the germination and the establishment. [music] Give it another pass at the lowest setting and we'll see how that goes.

Much better. Much better. See, that's all we needed right there. Just to get some of that seed [music] down into the soil. Are you still going to see some of the seed at the top [music] on top of the soil? Sure you will. Um, but most of [music] it is now incorporated. It has soil around it. And if you want to come in with your roller, you could come and you can roll [music] this if you wanted to. And you see how much less of that seed [music] is sitting on top of the soil versus what it looks like over here.

You can really [music] see the difference. So, that's what we're going for. We'll go ahead and [music] do this entire area and uh we'll give you a a view of it [music] after we get finished. >> [groaning] >> Now, here's the end [music] result of us doing that. You can see the difference. Less seed just sitting on top of the soil. More of that seed is now incorporated into the soil. How long that take? 2 minutes maybe.

If that will you still see some seed sitting there? Yeah, because it's you want it to be right there close to that top of that soil [music] surface. You don't want to bury it too deep. But this is giving it more protection. is not sitting right on top of the soil. It's more of it [music] incorporated into that soil top layer. All right, y'all. So, uh that is where we're at. That's the process for doing this. It's very quick, very simple, easy thing to do [music] um to ensure that you get better germination, better establishment.

I've been talking about it for years. The pros have been doing it for years. Uh you don't need that expensive Pete moss that seems to go up by about five bucks every single year. Uh [music] so this is my method. Been doing it for a while and it is a proven [music] way of doing this. So uh this is the 5 to 10% I've been telling y'all the yard looks about 90 to 95% good, which it did, and it does. Uh this is the 5 to 10% that needs to be fixed and repaired.

These same three spots die out every single year. [music] And what do we do? We get out, we prepare it, we fix it, and we move on.
