Structuring the most common long-form length
Ten minutes is the default target for long-form YouTube, long enough to cover a topic properly, short enough that a single sitting feels easy. At the median measured pace that is about 1,810 words, which is enough room for a real structure rather than one stretched idea.
A shape that maps well onto 1,810 words: an opening that earns the click in the first 30 seconds, a short setup that frames the problem, three or four main sections that each advance the answer, and a payoff that resolves the promise from the title. If you outline before writing, budget words per beat the way you would budget minutes, roughly 181 words for each minute a beat deserves.
The most common failure at this length is a soft middle. The opening is polished because everyone rewrites it, and the ending is short, but minutes four through seven carry the weakest material. When you cut, cut from the middle first.
What our data says
The middle half of the 349 videos we measured was delivered between 160 and 201 words per minute, with a median of 181. Scaled to 10 minutes, that is a range of 1,600 to 2,010 words with 1,810 in the middle.

One finding worth stating plainly: pace did not predict performance here. Videos far above their channel median (177 in the sample) had a median delivery of 181 wpm, and videos far below it (172) had 180 wpm. Talking speed alone did not separate hits from flops in our sample, so pick the pace that suits your material and delivery.
Words per minute computed as total spoken transcript words divided by video length, across 349 YouTube videos from 36 channels, collected in July 2026. Genres were assigned per channel by the same frozen automated classifier used in our preregistered small-channel study. These numbers describe association only, not causation.

Education channels in our sample (89 videos) spoke between 153 and 204 wpm for the middle half, median 179. For 10 minutes that is 1,530 to 2,040 words, 1,790 at the median.
Do faster talkers get more views on 10 minute videos?
Our data does not show that. Across the sample, videos that far outperformed their channel median had a median delivery of 181 wpm and videos that far underperformed had 180 wpm. That is an association from one sample, but delivery speed alone did not separate hits from flops.
Does the finished video run longer than the script math?
Usually. The word counts here cover spoken delivery only. Pauses, B-roll, screen recordings, and music breaks all add runtime without words, so a 1,810 word script frequently produces a video over 10 minutes.
