Pacing an 8 minute script
Eight minutes sits in an awkward middle. It is too long to coast on a single idea the way a 5 minute video can, and too short for the chapter structure a 15 minute video needs. At roughly 1,448 words, the shape that tends to work is a fast opening, two or three substantial sections, and a short close.
The 8 minute mark also carries history. For several years YouTube required a video to be at least 8 minutes long before mid-roll ads could be enabled, and many creators still plan around that number out of habit. If ad placement matters to you, verify the current YouTube Partner Program rules first, then let the topic decide the length. Stretching a 6 minute idea to 8 minutes adds exactly the kind of filler viewers skip.
A useful pacing check at this length: every section should change something for the viewer, a new question, a new example, a new stake. If two adjacent sections could swap places without anyone noticing, one of them is probably padding.
What our data says
Across the 349 videos we measured, the middle half ran between 160 and 201 words per minute, median 181. Multiply by 8 and an 8 minute script lands between 1,280 and 1,608 words, 1,448 at the median.
| Group | Videos | Median wpm | Words for 8 min |
|---|---|---|---|
| All creators | 349 | 181 | 1,280 to 1,608 |
| Education | 89 | 179 | 1,224 to 1,632 |
| Finance | 40 | 190 | 1,328 to 1,792 |
Worth knowing before you obsess over pace: in this sample, videos that far beat their channel median (177 of them) had a median delivery of 181 wpm, and videos that fell far below it (172) had 180 wpm. Nearly identical. Talking speed alone did not separate hits from flops in our sample.
Words per minute computed as total spoken transcript words divided by video length, across 349 YouTube videos from 36 channels, collected in July 2026. Genres were assigned per channel by the same frozen automated classifier used in our preregistered small-channel study. These numbers describe association only, not causation.
Frequently asked questions
How many words is an 8 minute YouTube script?
About 1,280 to 1,608 words. We measured the spoken delivery of 349 YouTube videos and the middle half ran between 160 and 201 words per minute. At the median pace of 181 wpm, 8 minutes of speech is 1,448 words.
Why do so many creators target 8 minutes?
For several years YouTube required a video to be at least 8 minutes long before a creator could enable mid-roll ads, which made 8 minutes a widely used planning target. Monetization rules change, so check the current YouTube Partner Program requirements rather than planning a video around a remembered threshold.
How many words if I speak slowly?
At 160 words per minute, the 25th percentile pace in our sample, an 8 minute script is 1,280 words. Education channels in the sample had a 25th percentile of 153 wpm, which works out to 1,224 words for 8 minutes.
Do finance channels need longer scripts for 8 minutes?
Slightly, if they match the paces we measured. Finance channels in our sample (40 videos) had a median of 190 wpm, so 8 minutes is about 1,520 words. Education channels (89 videos) had a median of 179 wpm, about 1,432 words.
Should I talk faster to fit more into 8 minutes?
Our data gives no reason to force it. Overperforming videos in our sample had a median delivery of 181 wpm and underperforming videos 180 wpm, a negligible difference. That is an association from one sample, not proof of anything, but pace alone did not separate hits from flops.
Does the word count include pauses and B-roll?
No. These numbers cover spoken words only. Pauses, B-roll sections, and demonstrations add runtime without adding words, so a 1,448 word script often produces a video somewhat longer than 8 minutes.
