Sustaining attention across 2,715 words
A 15 minute script is a different writing problem from a 10 minute one. At roughly 2,715 words, no single hook carries the whole video. Viewers decide to keep watching many times, so the script needs a reason to stay at each decision point, a new question opened as the previous one closes.
Chaptering helps on both sides of the screen. For the viewer, named chapters turn a long video into a sequence of short ones and give skimmers a way in. For the writer, planning in chapters of roughly two to four minutes each, about 362 to 724 words at the median pace, makes a 2,715 word draft manageable and exposes weak sections early. A chapter that cannot justify its own mini-title probably should not survive the edit.
Endings matter more at this length. Someone who stayed 15 minutes is one of your most invested viewers, so close the loop you opened at the start and give them a specific next video rather than a generic sign-off.
What our data says
Across the 349 videos we measured, the middle half was delivered between 160 and 201 words per minute, median 181. Over 15 minutes those paces compound into a wide range: 2,400 to 3,015 words, a spread of 615 words depending on how fast you naturally speak.

And the caveat we attach to every page in this series: delivery speed did not distinguish winners in this sample. Videos far above their channel median (177 videos) had a median pace of 181 wpm, videos far below it (172 videos) had 180 wpm. Talking speed alone did not separate hits from flops in our sample.
Words per minute computed as total spoken transcript words divided by video length, across 349 YouTube videos from 36 channels, collected in July 2026. Genres were assigned per channel by the same frozen automated classifier used in our preregistered small-channel study. These numbers describe association only, not causation.

Not if the topic supports it. Fifteen minutes of speech is roughly 2,715 words at the median measured pace, which is a lot of material to sustain. The length itself is not the risk; the risk is a 10 minute idea stretched to 15. Cut to the length the material earns.
Should a 15 minute video use chapters?
Usually, yes. Chapters give viewers a map of a long video and let them jump to the part they came for. Writing the script in clearly named sections first makes the chapter markers a byproduct of the outline instead of an afterthought.
How many words is a 15 minute finance video?
Finance channels in our sample (40 videos) spoke between 166 and 224 wpm for the middle half, median 190. For 15 minutes that is 2,490 to 3,360 words, 2,850 at the median.
Do long videos need faster delivery to hold attention?
Our data does not support that. In the sample, videos that far outperformed their channel median had a median delivery of 181 wpm and videos that far underperformed had 180 wpm. That is an association from one sample, but talking speed alone did not separate hits from flops.
