What Is an Engaged View on YouTube? Views vs Engaged Views, Explained
An engaged view, in YouTube's own definition, is "how many times viewers stayed to watch past the initial seconds, not including any loops". A view is counted earlier than that: "beginning August 24, 2026, views are counted the moment a video starts to play across all formats, including Shorts, long-form videos (VOD), and live streams" (YouTube Help).
So every video now carries two counts. The public one starts at the first frame. The private one starts a few seconds later. The gap between them is the audience that opened the video and left before it had said anything, and for a scripted video that gap is mostly a script problem.
The definitions, from YouTube Help
| Metric | YouTube's definition | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Counted "the moment a video starts to play across all formats" | Public view count, Analytics |
| Engaged views | "How many times viewers stayed to watch past the initial seconds, not including any loops" | Analytics (Shorts chip and advanced reports) |
| Stayed to watch | "The percentage of times viewers stayed to watch past the initial seconds of a Short" | Analytics, Shorts |
| Average view duration | "Average minutes watched among those who stayed to watch. This is calculated from engaged views and their corresponding watch time" | Analytics, Videos |
| Average percentage viewed | "Average percentage of a video watched among those who stayed to watch. This is calculated from engaged views and their corresponding watch time" | Analytics, Videos |
Two things follow from the last two rows. Average view duration and average percentage viewed are averages over engaged views only. A viewer who left in the first second does not drag them down. That is why a video can show a healthy average view duration and still have a large gap between views and engaged views: the people who left early are simply not in the average.
Which number pays
The same help page states what the counts are used for: "YPP earnings will still be based on 'engaged Shorts views' and 'engaged watch hours'. YPP eligibility will still be based on 'qualified Shorts views' and 'qualified watch hours.'" The view count that viewers see is not the number that decides either.
The Shorts side of this changed first. A YouTube employee post in the Help community states that "beginning on 3/31/2025, Shorts views will count the number of times your Short starts to play or replay with no minimum watch time requirement", and that "the original Shorts view metric" is "now called 'engaged views' in YouTube Analytics" (YouTube Help community). The August 2026 change extended the start-of-play count to long-form videos and live streams.
If you track a channel by public views, the chart stepped up on both dates without any change in watching. Compare engaged views across the two periods instead.
Why the gap is a script problem
For a Short, the gap between views and engaged views is the feed decision. The viewer saw the first frame and the first words and swiped, or stayed. Stayed to watch vs swiped away covers that metric and why YouTube publishes no threshold for it. The script controls what is said in those seconds; the Shorts retention guide shows how to open a Short so the first line carries the premise.
For a long-form video, the viewer already chose the video from the thumbnail and title. Leaving in the initial seconds usually means the first lines did not match what was promised, or restated the title instead of starting. YouTube's own advice for the Intro figure in the key moments report is to change the packaging to match the content, or to change the first 30 seconds. The first 30 seconds guide and the 36 hook examples cover the second option.
How to read your own gap
- •In Analytics, open the Shorts chip and compare views with engaged views for your last ten Shorts. The ratio is the stayed to watch figure.
- •For long-form, open the video and use the advanced report to read engaged views beside views. Videos published before August 24, 2026 will show a smaller gap because the old view count already required some watching.
- •Sort by the gap, not by views. A Short with many views and few engaged views was shown widely and rejected quickly. A Short with the reverse was held by the people who saw it.
- •Read the first lines of the scripts at both ends of that sort. The difference is usually visible on the page before it is visible in the chart.
What to change before the next upload
The seconds that decide an engaged view are written before they are recorded. Paste the first three sentences into the hook analyzer for a hook score and rewrites, or run the whole draft through the free script check to see where the writing is most likely to lose attention. Both read text only; neither knows how published viewers will behave, which is what the engaged view count will tell you afterwards.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between views and engaged views on YouTube?
A view is counted the moment a video starts to play, across Shorts, long-form videos and live streams since August 24, 2026. An engaged view counts only when the viewer stayed past the initial seconds, and loops are excluded.
Do engaged views affect monetization?
Yes. YouTube Help states that YouTube Partner Program earnings are based on engaged Shorts views and engaged watch hours, and that eligibility is based on qualified Shorts views and qualified watch hours, not on the public view count.
Is an engaged view the same as stayed to watch?
They are the same event expressed two ways. Engaged views is the count of times viewers stayed past the initial seconds; stayed to watch is that count as a percentage of Shorts views.
Why did my view count jump without more watch time?
The counting rule changed, for Shorts on March 31, 2025 and for all formats on August 24, 2026, so that a view starts at the first play. Compare engaged views across periods to see whether watching actually changed.
Does a loop count as an engaged view?
No. YouTube's definition of engaged views explicitly excludes loops.
