Free YouTube Script Checkers Compared: What Each Free Tier Actually Gives You (2026)
"Free YouTube script checker" returns a list of tools whose free tiers do very different things. Some audit a script you paste. One analyses a finished video, not a script. One gives you research but no scripts at all. Two are general assistants that will read anything, with no YouTube-specific rubric. This comparison reads each free tier from the vendor's own pricing page, on 17 October 2026, and says what it is for.
Prepublish is one of the seven, so read our row with the same scepticism as the others. Every figure below is on the linked page; where a page does not state something, the cell says so.
The seven free tiers
| Tool | What the free tier reads | Free allowance | Rewrites on free? | Account? | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prepublish | A pasted or uploaded YouTube script, long-form | A free check per script: hook, structure and pacing scores, a relative attention-risk map, a policy pre-flight, and the single biggest flagged passage with its finished rewrite. The remaining rewrites are locked | One, for the biggest flagged passage | No account; an email address is asked for before the result | prepublish.ai/pricing |
| RetentionYT | A pasted script | "2 script audits / month", "5,000 words / month", "1 project", with a "readiness verdict + title alignment + top fixes" | "1 AI rewrite / month" | Yes, via a registration page | retentionyt.com/pricing |
| Story Lint | A pasted script, scored against creator-style templates | "3 analyses / month", "up to 4,000 words", "1 saved script", "full template library" | No rewrites; Story Lint's own copy says it never hands you replacement sentences. "Suggestions" are a paid-plan quota | Yes | storylint.app/pricing |
| Retensis | A finished video or a YouTube link, not a script | "2 video analyses per month" with an overall grade and five category scores. Script Coach, its script feedback tool, is listed on the Growth plan at $29.99 a month | Not on free | Yes | retensis.com/pricing |
| Subscribr | Planning and research; no script generation or editing on free | "3 idea batches every month", "10 intel searches every month", one channel, and you can "save scripts written anywhere". Script credits start on Growth at $99 a month | No | Yes | subscribr.ai/pricing |
| ChatGPT | Anything you paste, with no script rubric unless you supply one | A free tier exists; OpenAI's help centre says "the default model and available limits can change over time" | Yes, if you ask | Yes | OpenAI Help |
| Claude | Anything you paste, with no script rubric unless you supply one | Free plan at $0 with chat, web search, file creation and up to five Projects; Pro is $17 a month on an annual plan or $20 monthly | Yes, if you ask | Yes | claude.com/pricing |
Three clarifications the table cannot hold:
- •Retensis is a video tool with a script feature. Its free plan analyses uploaded videos for short-form platforms. The page says Script Coach "gives AI feedback and rewrites", and lists it under Growth. If your question is about a script you have not recorded, the free tier does not answer it.
- •Subscribr's free plan is a workspace, not a writer. Scripts, thumbnails and finished videos need a paid plan. Its own FAQ says you "pay for production, not for organizing".
- •The two assistants have no built-in rubric. They will critique a script, and the quality of the critique depends on the prompt. The rate my YouTube script rubric includes a paste-in prompt that asks for quoted lines rather than general notes.
What "free" buys in each case
You want a verdict and one fix, now, without signing up. The Prepublish free check returns scores, the risk map, the policy pre-flight and the biggest flagged passage with its rewrite. The Ready-to-Record Pass ($19 one-time for one script) unlocks the rest of that report; Creator is $29/month, or $290/year for every script.
You publish twice a month and want a full report each time. RetentionYT's two audits a month with a readiness verdict fit that cadence exactly, within 5,000 words. The third script that month needs the Creator plan at $190 a year.
You want structural notes against a named creator's style. Story Lint's three analyses a month score a script against its style templates. It is a linter: it tells you what is off, and leaves the rewriting to you.
You already recorded. Retensis reads the video. For a script, the tool is on its $29.99 plan.
You want a second reader with no quota and no rubric. ChatGPT or Claude, with a prompt that forces specifics.
How to test any of them on your own channel
A free tier is a trial. Use it as one:
- •Pick a published video where you know the first-30-second figure from the key moments report, and one where that figure was poor.
- •Paste the scripts of both into the checker. Do not tell it which is which.
- •Read whether the tool flagged the opening of the weak one, and what it said about the opening of the strong one.
- •Compare the flagged passages with the dips on the real retention graph. A tool that marks the same stretches has read something real; a tool that praises both equally has read nothing.

What no free tier can do
None of these tools, including ours, knows how your published viewers will behave. A script checker reads text and returns a relative map of where the writing is most likely to lose attention. The retention graph after publishing is the only measurement of what happened. The checker's job is to make the next draft better before the recording costs anything, and the cheapest way to find out whether it does that is the four-step test above, which every free tier on this page allows.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a completely free YouTube script analyzer?
Free tiers exist, with limits. On 17 October 2026, RetentionYT offered 2 audits a month within 5,000 words, Story Lint 3 analyses a month within 4,000 words, and Prepublish a free check per script that returns scores, an attention-risk map, a policy pre-flight and the biggest flagged passage with its rewrite, with the remaining rewrites locked.
Can ChatGPT check a YouTube script for free?
Yes. ChatGPT has a free tier, and it will critique any pasted script. It has no YouTube-specific rubric, so the result depends on the prompt; ask it to quote the exact lines it would change and to say why.
Which free tier gives a rewrite?
Prepublish gives the rewrite for the single biggest flagged passage on the free check. RetentionYT gives one AI rewrite a month on its free plan. Story Lint gives none; its suggestions are a paid quota. Retensis and Subscribr do not offer script rewrites on free.
Does Retensis have a free script checker?
Its free plan covers 2 video analyses a month. Script Coach, its script feedback tool, is listed on the Growth plan at $29.99 a month on the pricing page read on 17 October 2026.
Can a free script checker predict my retention?
No. Every tool on this page reads text or video and returns an estimate or a set of notes. The published retention graph is the only measurement of viewer behaviour; the checker is for improving the draft before recording.
