vidIQ vs TubeBuddy (2026): What Each Does, and the Job Neither Does
vidIQ and TubeBuddy are the two toolkits most creators install first, and most comparisons between them are affiliate pages. This one reads both plan pages as they stood on 17 October 2026 and quotes them. One caution before the table: neither page renders its dollar prices in the static HTML we fetched; the figures load in the checkout. Where a price appears below it is dated and attributed.
What each plan page says
| vidIQ | TubeBuddy | |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | "Free: $0", "150 AI Credits every month", "Niche trends", "Fresh content ideas backed by data", "Personalized growth tips from AI Coach", and "vidIQ MCP for Claude, ChatGPT or any other AI" | A free plan exists; the FAQ says a cancelled licence is "downgraded to the free plan". The page does not list what the free plan includes |
| Paid tiers | Boost ("2,000 AI Credits monthly", thumbnails, "Unlimited trends research", "AI Coach with deep thinking", masterclasses) and Max ("6,000 AI Credits monthly", "Up to 3x AI Coach conversations", "Up to 11 hours of short clipping and generations") | Pro ("Access to search optimization features", "Limited access to video engagement tools") and Legend ("Access to all 50+ tools & features", "Video A/B tests and title generators", "Predictive analytics and competitor scorecard", "Unlimited access to all of our AI features") |
| Prices | Not rendered on the plans page. In September 2026 our analyzer guide read Boost at $16.58 a month billed yearly or $19 month to month | Not rendered on the pricing page. Annual billing is labelled "Save 20%" |
| A/B testing | Not listed on the plans page | Listed under Legend: "Video A/B tests" |
| Coaching | A "Boost + Coaching" plan with "1-on-1 YouTube coaching" where a coach "provides direct feedback on titles, hooks, pacing, and more" | Not listed |
| AI assistant access | "vidIQ MCP connects your account to Claude, ChatGPT or any other AI that supports MCP, and it is available on every plan, including Free" | Not listed |
| Small-channel discount | Not listed | "Have less than 1,000 subscribers? Use RisingStarBuddy coupon on the checkout page to get 50% off" |
| Refunds | Not stated on the plans page | "TubeBuddy currently offers a 30-day refund policy" |
| Licence scope | Enterprise "if you're managing more than 3 channels" | "A standard TubeBuddy license is tied to one YouTube channel"; Pro and Legend are "available to Individual Creators only", not to businesses with multiple channels, 50,000 or more subscribers, three or more channel managers, or 50 or more employees |

Where they differ in practice
vidIQ is built around AI credits. Every tier is defined by a monthly credit count, and the free tier's 150 credits are enough to try the research and AI Coach features. The MCP access on every plan means the same data is reachable from inside Claude or ChatGPT, which matters if you already plan videos in an assistant.
TubeBuddy is built around a tool count. The Legend tier's pitch is "all 50+ tools", and the feature table on its pricing page runs from keyword and tag tools through bulk editing to a chapter editor. The A/B testing line is the one creators most often cite as the reason to pick it, though YouTube's own Test & compare now covers titles and thumbnails for channels with access to it.
The licence rules are stricter than people expect. TubeBuddy states that its creator tiers are not available to businesses, and defines business by subscriber count, channel count and headcount. vidIQ moves teams managing more than three channels to Enterprise. An agency comparing the two should read those paragraphs before the feature list.
Coaching is the unusual line item. vidIQ's Boost + Coaching plan is the only place on either page where a human reads your work and comments on "hooks, pacing" in your own videos. That is feedback after publishing, on videos, from a person.
The job neither does
Both toolkits work on the published video and its packaging: keywords, tags, titles, thumbnails, upload timing, competitor tracking, and analytics after the fact. Neither plan page describes reading a script before recording and flagging where the writing is likely to lose attention. vidIQ's September 2026 pages described a Script Writer that generates drafts from a topic; generating a draft is a different job from auditing one you wrote.
If your impressions and click-through are fine and the retention graph is the problem, the fix is in the words before they are recorded, and that is the gap these two leave open. The best YouTube script analyzer guide covers the tools that do that job. Prepublish vs vidIQ and Prepublish vs TubeBuddy set the stages side by side, and the free script check runs the pre-recording read on a pasted draft.
Which to pick
- •Under 1,000 subscribers, one channel: TubeBuddy's RisingStarBuddy coupon halves the price; vidIQ's free tier gives 150 credits a month without paying. Try the free tier first and buy the one whose research you actually used.
- •You plan in Claude or ChatGPT: vidIQ, because its MCP is on every plan including free.
- •You want A/B tests inside the toolkit: TubeBuddy Legend lists them; check whether YouTube's native Test & compare already covers your need.
- •You want a human to review hooks and pacing: vidIQ Boost + Coaching is the only option on either page.
- •You manage several channels or work at an agency: read the licence terms on both pages first; both push multi-channel use to Enterprise.
- •Your problem is retention, not discovery: neither. Fix the script, then add whichever toolkit's research you prefer. Why your YouTube video is not getting views separates the four failure points so you buy for the right one.
