What This Pattern Tries to Do
Two states of the same thing create an implicit story. The brain measures the distance between them and wants the middle filled in. This pattern is strongest when both states are checkable, because a visible or countable change does the persuading on its own. It also sets up the video structure for free: the gap between the two states is the outline.
When to Use
- Transformations where the starting point can still be shown or described
- Skill, repair, or rebuild content with a visible difference between states
- Case studies where the change is the reason someone would watch
- Redesigns and revisions where both versions exist side by side
When Not to Use
- When the starting point cannot be described or shown at all
- When the change is small, since the contrast will read as padding
- When the earlier state would expose someone who did not agree to be shown
Copy-Paste Examples
These are illustrative templates. Replace every fact, number, credential, and result with evidence that is true for you before publishing.
“This shelf was a pile of scrap on Tuesday. Here it is on Friday.”
Writing intent: A short window makes the change feel quick, and the material contrast is visual.
“Day one was twelve seconds of running. Day ninety is this trail.”
Writing intent: Both states are countable, so the progress is checkable rather than asserted.
“The first version of this logo took three weeks. The final one took an afternoon.”
Writing intent: Measures the change in time spent, which reframes the work as learning rather than revision.
“This bed was bare soil in April. Same camera angle, today.”
Writing intent: The fixed angle makes the comparison honest and easy to verify.
“Before the patch, this frame dropped to twenty frames per second. After, it holds.”
Writing intent: Uses a measurement the audience already understands instead of describing the change in words.
“My room before and after one rule: nothing on the floor.”
Writing intent: Reduces a vague transformation to a single, repeatable constraint.
“The first take and the final take of the same line, back to back.”
Writing intent: Playing both versions removes the need to explain what improved.
“Same recipe, two ovens, twenty degrees apart. Look at the crust.”
Writing intent: Isolates one variable, so the comparison doubles as a small test.
“This guitar arrived with a cracked top. Here is the same guitar today.”
Writing intent: The damage is the before state, which makes the repair the obvious subject of the video.
“My budget spreadsheet in January and in December. Same categories.”
Writing intent: Holding categories constant shows the change without implying a lesson the viewer must accept.
“The thumbnail I published and the one I replaced it with.”
Writing intent: Invites the viewer to compare two images and form their own opinion before the explanation.
“This is the same street, photographed fourteen months apart.”
Writing intent: The subject does the work, and the time gap supplies the reason to look twice.
