Common Mistakes to Avoid

Summarizing every chapter instead of reducing the book to one claim plus the ideas worth keeping.

Reciting the publisher blurb rather than quoting a specific line and its page.

Never saying who should skip the book, which turns the summary into a promotion.

Skipping the weak section, which leaves the viewer with no way to tell which parts to trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a book summary video be?

Ten to fifteen minutes for a non fiction book with three ideas worth keeping. A 10 minute summary is about 1,810 words. Summaries that run 25 minutes usually mean the video is recapping the book rather than summarizing it.

Should I cover every chapter in a book summary?

No. Reduce the book to its core argument and the two or three ideas a reader would use, then name where the argument is weak. Chapter by chapter recaps lose viewers because the video becomes a table of contents with commentary.

Do I need permission to summarize a book on video?

Summarizing and commenting on a book is normal critical use, but keep quotes short, credit the author and title on screen, and do not reproduce long passages or the structure of a whole chapter. Rules differ, so check the requirements that apply to you.

How do I make a book summary different from the ten others on the same title?

Quote a specific line with its page, add one counterexample of your own, and name the weakest section of the book. The last one is almost always missing from other summaries, and it is the part viewers stay for.
