A TikToker did the Benadryl challenge. She's now not alive. What happened? Benadryl, diphenhydramine, is one of the worst medicines that you can take, which means a lot of people are going to be taking it. But why is it the worst? It's a dirty medicine, meaning that it does a lot of different things. So, it causes a lot of side effects. It's supposed to be an allergy medicine, and it does that, but it also makes you sleepy.

So, it's sold as a sleep medicine, one that can cause dementia, one that some parents give to their kids when they want some peace and quiet. Don't do that. That's considered poisoning your kids. Speaking of poison, diphenhydramine is also an anticholinergic. A cholinergic promotes rest and digest, so an anticholinergic blocks rest and digest. This is where it gets messy. Isn't Benadryl supposed to be a sleep medicine?

How would it block rest and digest? This is where the Benadryl challenge comes in. We've sequenced the entire human genome, so we know the biological structures in our brain, what they look like, how they're shaped, and what they do. In really large amounts, Benadryl prevents normal sleep-wake function in the brain because part of its chemical molecule is the same as the normal brain chemical that the body naturally makes for normalizing that same sleep-wake function.

You mess with this part of the brain by providing this similar-looking, but ultimately different chemical, Benadryl, and then you see the hatman. You lose your mind. You increase your risk of dementia, and then you get seizures, which is what happened to the TikToker who passed away. Except, there's one final thing, because people don't die from seizures alone. Benadryl, in its dirty ways, also blocks electrical activity in the heart.

This can force the heart into an abnormal rhythm where it shakes in place, and blood can't be pumped anywhere. Now, the brain is starved of oxygen because blood isn't pumping, and then you have seconds before it's over. And that's what it did to this young teenage girl. You can try to fix it in the hospital, but if there's way too much Benadryl floating around in the body, it'll just keep throwing off the heart until it's over.

So, if you don't need to put it in your body, don't put it in your body. I'm saddened to see that this is in the news again because I covered it in 2020 when it happened in the same place.
