I gave ChatGPT one job, make Minecraft. The prompt is literally going to say make Minecraft and I'm going to judge it like a player. So, here are the rules. The final game has to pass seven tests. Number one, world generation, two, movement, three, breaking blocks, four, placing blocks, five, inventory and crafting, six, survival. Oh, and seven, it has to do that in under one hour. If this works, it means AI can take a massive game idea and turn it into a playable prototype in one sitting.
If it fails, we'll know exactly where AI coding still falls apart. Here's the prompt. {slash} goal, make Minecraft. And then, I gave it a bunch of instructions as well as the seven measures we're going to use to rate it. And it took it just under 20 minutes to finish its first prompt, which is the perfect time for us to judge it, see how it's doing, and see what the next prompt are. There's still 40 minutes on the line for it, so it better have gotten us 80% of the way there.
Let's uh paste in the link and uh try it out. Let's go. BlockCraft Survival. BlockCraft Survival. Let's click play and Oh, look. All the commands work so far. And we even go slower in water. Hold on. Yeah, we we go slower in water. All right, let's try Oh, I just realized we don't have hands, so it just does that when we try to pick an item out. Let's try if we go Oh, we have an inventory as well. And we have crafting.
So, we'll need planks and sticks and more planks. Let's see. Can we get a crafting table? So, this is a crafting table. All of the items look the same. They're literally all squares. But, if we try to place the crafting table How do I open it? No block selected. Oh. Oh. The mobs. It's night already. Wait. It's way too easy to kill them. You just spam press hit mob, hit mob, hit mob, and they die. Come here. And we can run as well.
This is way too easy. We need to make it a lot harder to kill mobs because that is nowhere near as fun as the real Minecraft where, you know, it's actually difficult to kill mobs. What is happening to the mobs? You died. The world keeps going. Respond and try to recover your foothold. All right. Let's go out for round two of prompting. All right. There we go. Literally 5 minutes of me writing a prompt, and we're going to come back once it is done.
My goodness. This took it another 19 minutes. Almost another 20 minutes, which means it literally only has 20 more minutes left before it can do anything. After that, it cannot touch it anymore, and that's it. That would be the final version of the game we can try out. But, with that, let's let's see what it did. Let's refresh the link. Let's play it out. Click to play. Oh. Let's go. We are in a snow biome. So, it added snow.
Uh we have an arm, although it's floating around. It moves when we try to break something. Let's collect some logs because what I want to do next is try to go to inventory. Okay, we have more things we can build. Let's get some planks, some sticks, and make a crafting table, some more planks, and let's place the inventory or the crafting table. And let's make a wood sword, a pickaxe, and a shovel. And an axe. Basically everything that we can make.
I think night is almost here. So, let's run. Let's explore a little bit. Let's see what types of biomes it has because I did ask it for more biomes. It literally only had the plain biome. So, let's go explore. Although, night is coming, which only means trouble. Let's hold our sword. Because the second thing, when we hold something, it it doesn't show in our hand, which is something I need to mention to it. It did also make the night time a lot darker, which is great because that's how it looks like or it's closer to how it looks like in Minecraft.
All right, there we go. I think that's a skeleton. Yes. Oh, there you go. So, we can only punch it every couple of seconds, not every single second. Whoa, spider. No, no, no. We're almost dead. How do I eat an apple? There you go. Boy, okay. I think we're in the grass biome. Oh my god. Okay, now the game is a lot more challenging. Not going to lie. Oh my god. We died. That is honestly good news that we died without meaning to.
It means the game is hard enough for it to be entertaining, for it to be fun. You want to be able You want a challenge. You don't want to play something that feels too easy because you're going to get bored very quickly. Do we spawn? Yes, we spawn back with our items. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to dig dig dig dig try to find Oh, here it is. Is that our pickaxe? Yes, that is our pickaxe. I want to see if we can craft torches.
There you go. Now we have torches. Do they make things around them brighter? Kind of. Eh. Yep. I died. What do you mean I died? Oh, come here. Another thing I noticed is it's missing the item wearability element, meaning the more you use an item, the more it should wear out and eventually break, which is something very important and that adds stake in the Minecraft or higher stakes in Minecraft. I should probably write those down.
Oh, we died and at least now we can test out the torches. Torches make everything around them brighter except the torches themselves. They're not bright. Let's put it here. But it's good that they give some light. Oh my god, did I die again without meaning to? All right, I think I have enough things to give it feedback on. I'm going to give it all the feedback I have and this is going to be the final time, probably. If it takes the next 20 minutes to finish a prompt, then this is going to be its last chance to edit its thing.
All right, this is I believe the final prompt I will be giving it if it will be taking 20 minutes to finish it. So, let's hit send and cross our fingers. Let's go. See you on the other side. So, our third prompt actually took 17 minutes, not 20. So, technically we still have about 3 to 4 minutes left. So, what I did is try out the game and sent in one last prompt. Just one last prompt before we officially call it out.
And once that prompt is complete, we're going to start the actual challenge of playing the game. With that, we are finally done. And now we're going to start testing out our game. Let's see what we have here. Logcraft Survival. Let's get started and play. I mean, first of all What is that? A sheep? Let's go. Let's go uh Oh, a pig. Log hit pig. Does the pig give us food once we kill it? Oh. There we go. We have raw pork chop.
All right, can we Can we We can break wood. Where did the wood go? That is one log. All right, and I'm just going to gather resources before the night falls. Oh, look at that. It's literally raining apples. I don't think I'll even need to hunt for animals cuz there's so many apples. And creepers explode. Does it actually explode? I don't Oh my god, I I kind of want to test it out if they explode, but I also don't want to die.
Oh. They do. They do explode. All right, where should we build our home? Maybe we should build it in our spawn point, so I'll let the spiders kill me. Come on, kill me. I'm dead. Let's build here. Why am I making this harder on myself? I can just craft planks, a bunch of planks. Let's put the crafting table inside. We can craft wooden doors. I'm going to craft doors. Put them here. We can craft chests. I'm going to craft one.
A wood sword would be pretty helpful right now. And a wood axe and pickaxe. Let's see. Yeah, it gets considerably faster to chop down wood with an axe. That makes sense. So, very nice. Very well done. Can't see anything. I need torches. But in order to get torches, we need coal. How do we find coal? Look at that. All of the the the blocks that I've broken downstairs, they're right here. Just chilling. Oh, hi there. Oh, that's right.
I have doors. So, let me place the door somewhere. Where is the middle of the house? Let's say here. I love how the doors function. This is an open door. And you can only open one at a time, but doesn't let you go go If I open the other, nope. I need to have both open. Oh, that's right. I also have a chest. Do chests work in this game? Yep, chests work. And just like that, we've built a shelter. Successfully. Now, all we need to do is survive the night.
And for that, we need to build a bed. And for beds, we need three wools and three planks. All right, let me go ahead and just make better weapons. Let's make a stone sword, a stone axe, a stone pickaxe, a stone shovel, everything stone. Oh, look at that. We can even make armor. Five leather, eight leather, seven leather. I'm guessing we need to kill cows for that. There we go. All right. Let's go make a bed. For that, we need sheep.
Come here. I am so sorry for what is about to happen. Okay, that is Oh, that pork chop. Pork chop again. Those are pigs. Is that a sheep? No, that that has to be a cow. Yep, that is a cow. What is that? Is that also a cow? That is a cow. This that has to be a cow, I'm assuming. That is hidden inside the block. What is over there? More cows. There are only cows and pigs. That has to be pig. Why does the pig have black feet?
There are literally no signs of sheep. That has to be a sheep. Come on. Sheep? No, pig. Maybe I just need to keep exploring. So, either ChatGPT did not put sheep in the game, or it's in a different biome that we're somehow not on. Okay, if this is not a sheep, then I guess it did not create Yep, this is a pig. It did not create sheep. So, I guess then in order to survive a night, we're going to have to do it the old-fashioned way of just fighting mobs until one of us dies.
Oh, look at that. It even made a furnace. So, we can place furnaces down just like that. We can make glass? Hold on. Is there sand in the game? I don't think I've seen sand anywhere in this biome. All right, night survival starts. I'm not seeing any mob spawn, which is also suspicious because if in fact mobs don't spawn that frequently, then it's not really a challenging game. We just survived the night and we only had to kill one creeper.
What? So, did ChatGPT make Minecraft? Here is the score. When it comes to world generation, I'll give it a seven out of 10. It created a real block world with terrain, trees, and layers. It is simple, but it passes. When it comes to movement, I'll give it a six out of 10. I mean, it was playable, but very floaty. It felt less like Steve and more like a drone with severe anxiety. For mining and placing blocks, we'll give it a seven out of 10.
I mean, placing blocks was fine, but every time I would mine a block, it would just float up to the highest block in the game. Inventory and crafting, I'll give a seven out of 10. It was ugly, but it was functional. I mean, I could collect resources, craft tools, and use them. Survival, I'll give the lowest out of anything with a four out of 10. I mean, the enemy technically spawned, but it fights like a haunted Roomba.
And for the fun factor, I'll give a six out of 10, which I did not expect. I mean, it was doing so great until the last literal update where it just removed most mobs. And without a challenge, games aren't as fun anymore. But, it still kept the essence of Minecraft, which is the creativity, the things you could craft, the the buildings you could create, the things you could do. And even though the game is broken, it is somewhat weirdly fun because the core loop is still there.
We could make it a lot better with just a few problems, but that being said, the final score I'm giving it is a six out of 10. It wasn't a great Minecraft clone, but it is a real playable prototype. And that is the actual takeaway I'm taking from this video. ChatGPT did not replace a game developer here. It replaced the blank page. It gave me a world, controls, mining, placing, inventory, and enough of a loop that I could test the idea instead of just talking or thinking about it.
But, it still needed human judgment at every important moment. I mean, it it didn't know movement felt bad. It didn't know the crafting menu looked awful. It didn't know the enemy was annoying instead of scary. It didn't know when the game felt fun and when it did not. And that is a very real line right now. AI can get you to playable faster than ever, but playable is not the same as fun or good. And the more complex the project gets, the more of human role shifts from typing code to judging taste, testing the system, and forcing the AI through some of the boring fixes.
So, yeah, ChatGPT made Minecraft a cursed broken browser-based Minecraft. But, I could mine blocks, craft tools, build a shelter, get attacked at night, and die because my own AI-generated mob just ghosted through a wall and just teleported. And that counts. If you want part two, I'll give Claude the exact same challenge, and we'll see who makes the better Minecraft. Or, we could have it make GTA 6 before Rockstar actually releases it.
