If you've dabbled in Facebook Ads Manager recently, you've probably seen something called Advantage Plus campaigns. And you might be wondering, what is that exactly? Is it actually better or is Meta just trying to make ads easier for beginners or what? Because let's be real, whenever a platform says, "Just turn this on and let AI handle it." It sounds great, but it also sounds like you're giving up a lot of control. And a lot of platforms are not advanced enough for you to be giving up that kind of control yet. So, in this

So, in this video, we're going to break down what Advantage Plus campaigns actually are, how they work behind the scenes, when they perform better and when they don't, and whether they're actually better or just easier. In case you don't know, I'm Brandy with Life Marketing, the digital marketing agency with a mission to help small businesses grow. We've driven over $272 million in revenue for our small business clients using Facebook and Instagram ads alone.
So, if you're interested in having us handle all of your advertising needs for you, you can schedule a free, no-pressure strategy call using the link below. Otherwise, let's start by understanding what Advantage Plus campaigns actually are. At a high level, Advantage Plus campaigns are Meta's way of saying, "Let us do more of the work for you." Instead of you manually controlling things like targeting, placements, or budget distribution, Advantage Plus uses AI to automate all of that in real time.
It looks at your ad creative, your copy, your landing page, your past performance data, and then decides who to show your ad to, where to show it, and how to spend your budget based on those things. So, instead of you building a super detailed campaign structure and adding all of these interests and behaviors to the targeting, you're giving Meta a goal like sales or leads and letting the system figure out the best way to get you those.
That's the core idea. So, now let's talk about how Advantage Plus campaigns work and why Meta pushes them. Meta's AI has gotten significantly better, and according to Meta, advertisers using Advantage Plus sales campaigns saw about a 9% improvement in their cost per conversion on average. Now, why does that happen? Because Advantage Plus unlocks Meta's most advanced optimization systems. Think about it this way. It has data on billions of people.
It's constantly analyzing who is engaging, who is converting, what creatives are working, what audiences are responding, and what they're responding to. And then it's adjusting your ad campaign accordingly in real time, faster than any human ever could. So, instead of you manually testing five audiences, three ad sets, different placements, Meta is doing all of that in the background automatically at scale across billions of users.
That's the advantage. But, so now let's answer the real question. Are Advantage Plus campaigns actually better, or are they just easier? The honest answer is they can be both, but only if you use them correctly. Because here's the truth most people miss, Advantage Plus doesn't magically fix bad ads. It just optimizes faster based on the signals you give it. So, if your creative is weak, if your offer is unclear, or if your messaging doesn't connect with the viewer, then Advantage Plus will just help you lose money faster.
But, if all of those inputs are strong, that's when Advantage Plus becomes powerful, because it can find better audiences faster, allocate budget more efficiently, and scale what's working without overcomplicating your account. So, it's not just easier, it's more efficient when the foundation is right. Now, knowing this, it makes you think, "Okay, I get that. But, so then how do you actually know when you should use them?" So, let's answer that and talk about when Advantage Plus campaigns work best.
Advantage Plus campaigns tend to work best when number one, your goal is clear, like sales or leads, because Advantage Plus performs best with conversion-focused campaigns. If your goal is purchases, leads, bookings, that's where this kind of campaign shines. Number two, you have data or you're generating it quickly. The more data Meta has, the better this type of campaign performs. That includes data like website traffic, past conversions, and customer lists.
If you're newer, you can still make this work, but performance does improve as data builds. And number three, you use strong creative. This is the big one. With Advantage Plus, your creative matters more than ever. Why? Because like we said earlier, Meta is using your ad to decide who to show it to. It studies who watches your video, who clicks, who converts, and then finds more people like them. So, your ad becomes the targeting, which means if your ad is clear, relevant, and customer-focused, Advantage Plus will scale it.
If it's not, it won't. Now, to keep this real, there are times where Advantage Plus does not perform as well. So, let's talk about when Advantage Plus campaigns don't work well. Number one, when you want full control. Like if you're trying to test very specific audiences, control every placement, or run highly segmented campaigns. I would say this is usually a rare case, especially for beginners starting out, that you would have a scenario where you need to test or target something that specific.
But, in the event that you do, Advantage Plus can feel limiting. Number two, when your creative is weak. If your ads aren't strong, Advantage Plus doesn't fix that. And when I say strong, I mean if your ads don't resonate with your audience. A quick litmus test you can do to see if your ad is strong or not is to look at it and ask yourself, does this ad talk about my business or does it talk about my customers? For example, does it list out all of your services and product features and competitive pricing or does it address a problem your customer struggles with or a goal they want to achieve and provide a solution.
The latter is what we're talking about when we say a strong, compelling ad. An ad that your audience will actually care about and stop the scroll. But, if your ad is weak and fails to do any of that, Advantage Plus just amplifies the problem. Number three, when you don't give it enough inputs. Meta actually recommends using diverse creatives and connecting your first-party data to feed it strong signals about who is converting well and the most for your business.
If you don't do that, you're not giving the system enough to work with, so performance can suffer as a result. And number four, when you use Advantage Plus at the ad level, you may have noticed that so far I've mainly been talking about Advantage Plus at the ad set level, but there is an Advantage Plus feature at the ad level that I would recommend avoiding altogether. When you're in the ad level and you scroll down to an Advantage Plus creative, it says "Tailor your ad for the person viewing it by letting us automatically optimize your creative.
This can help improve performance." I'd beg to differ on the last part, but anyways, click edit and you'll see all the optimizations Facebook wants to make for you. It wants to add to your image, add a song, make text adjustments, and so on. But specifically look at the image template option. That gray box on top of our image where it says "Get a free proposal" was created and added by Facebook. And one time, you guys, these options turned back on by themselves, so you need to triple-check that they're all off cuz Facebook will turn them back on on its own.
And it had added that text box again, but the box that time was like a deep forest green color with the same black font. So not only was it not our branding at all, but it was also hard to read with black on dark green. So as a business owner, you might come across your own ads scrolling on Facebook if it's a retargeting ad and you've been on your website recently. And you might feel the same horror I did coming across your ad with it looking completely differently than how you set it up.
This is what and why that's happening. It's Facebook's Advantage Plus making its own judgment call about what looks good and sounds good on your ad, and I just wouldn't give Facebook that kind of creative freedom yet on the ad level. Brand recall plays a huge part in moving people down your sales funnel and converting them into a customer, and Facebook's visual additions to your ads are not going to help with brand recall or brand consumer trust, and therefore they have a good chance of deterring conversions.
So if you want to actually get results from Advantage Plus, here are the best practices to make Advantage Plus work. Number one, feed it first-party data. Upload customer lists and email subscribers, and make sure your Meta pixel is tracking all website activity. This helps Meta understand who matters to your business. Number two, use multiple creatives. Don't rely on one ad. Give Meta options with different hooks, different angles, and different formats.
This increases relevance and performance. Three, focus on clear outcomes. Choose the right objective. If you want sales, run a sales campaign. If you want leads, run a leads campaign, because Meta will optimize for exactly what you ask for. So, don't run an engagement campaign and expect sales. Expect likes and comments. And number four, let it learn. Don't micromanage it. One of the biggest mistakes business owners make is interfering too early.
Advantage Plus campaigns need time and data to optimize. If you constantly tweak things, you reset the learning process over and over, prolonging its ability to bring in results for you quicker. The bottom line is Advantage Plus campaigns are not just a beginner shortcut. They are Meta's most advanced system for scaling performance, but they only work as well as what you put into them. If your creative is strong, your offer is clear, and your data is clean, then Advantage Plus can outperform traditional setups.
If not, it won't save you, because at the end of the day, Meta's AI can optimize distribution, but it cannot fix bad marketing. And the businesses seeing the best results right now are not the ones controlling every detail. They're the ones giving Meta the clearest, strongest and letting it do what it does best.
