YouTube Shorts Monetization in 2027: Script Shorts That Feed Your Long-Form

October 30, 2026•10 min read•By Atakan Atamert, founder of Prepublish

For YouTube Shorts monetization from February 1, 2027, earning Shorts ad and subscription revenue requires 10 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days. Falling short costs you that one revenue line: you stay in the YouTube Partner Program and your long-form earnings continue. That changes what a Short is for. It no longer has to pay for itself, so it can be written to hand its viewer to the long video that does.

What changes for Shorts monetization on Feb 1, 2027?

From February 1, 2027, creators must maintain 10 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days to earn each month from the Shorts Creator Pool; missing that mark does not remove a channel from the YouTube Partner Program or affect its other earnings. The change is conditional access to one revenue line, not eligibility.

YouTube Help states it directly: "To earn each month from the Shorts Creator Pool, creators will now need to maintain 10M qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days." The same page, in bold, adds that if you miss the threshold "you will not be removed from YPP and this will not impact other YPP earnings, including long-form video" (YouTube Help).

Two details sit around that rule:

  • •The entry bar moves in the same update, separately. The YPP entry thresholds for new applicants also change on February 1, 2027, while YouTube says "If you are already in YPP, your status is not impacted by this update," and asks partners to accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027. The 2027 monetization requirements breakdown covers the entry numbers, and the YouTube Partner Program eligibility calculator checks your own subscribers, watch hours and Shorts views against both the current thresholds and the stricter ones that replace them.
  • •The new Shorts incentive programs are announced, not launched. YouTube says it is "introducing programs that may offer bonuses for YouTube Shopping, production credits for brand deals, and earnings boosts for cultural trend activations," and that eligible creators will get direct notifications on how to opt in "as these programs launch" (YouTube Help). No amounts, criteria or dates are published.

What happens if you're under 10M Shorts views?

Only the Shorts revenue share pauses. You stay in the program, long-form earnings continue, and the Shorts share comes back by itself. YouTube's announcement says channels below the threshold "remain in YPP and continue earning on long-form content, with Shorts revenue sharing automatically resuming once they cross 10 million views again" (YouTube Blog).

The verb in the help page is "maintain", over "the last 90 days". That describes a rolling window rather than a running total, so a channel that dips for a quarter drops into a pause, not a demotion.

The announcement frames the change as redistribution rather than exclusion: "Creators who already earn significant revenue from Shorts are unlikely to be impacted by these changes" (YouTube Blog).

Are Shorts still worth making for a small channel?

Yes, on one condition: every Short has to name the long video it feeds. What follows is our reasoning, not a YouTube statement, and it rests on how the two formats are paid for.

The case against is arithmetic. The 10 million figure is a separate business, and YouTube lists the two YPP entry routes as alternatives — qualified watch hours, or qualified Shorts views — so accumulating Shorts views is not a way of accumulating watch hours (YouTube Help), and watch hours from Shorts-feed views do not count toward the long-form threshold (YouTube Help).

The case for is that a Short is the cheapest way to be shown to someone who has never heard of your channel, and the feed does not ask how many subscribers you have — the argument in Shorts as a discovery surface applies to any niche. A Short that ends with the viewer opening a 14-minute video turns free distribution into the metric that pays. One that ends with the viewer scrolling on has bought attention and spent it.

One test decides it: can you name the long video? A title, not "my channel". If no such video exists, the Short belongs in a different plan.

YouTube describes the update as a way to "reward consistent viewership" (YouTube Help). Our reading: five bridge Shorts pointing at five real videos beat twenty pointing at nothing, and the YouTube Shorts retention guide covers how to read stayed-to-watch on each one.

If you already publish long videos, the cheapest bridge Shorts are usually inside them. Cutting Shorts from a long-form script covers how to find those passages on the page before you record.

How do you script a Short that sends viewers to long-form?

A bridge Short is a Short written to hand its viewer to one named long video: it pays off a narrow question completely, then ends on the question the long video answers. You write it backwards from the long video, and the pointer is a line in the script.

The four slots

SlotJobWhat goes in itTest
Hook lineStop the scroll on a premiseOne sentence built on a fact, a stake or a contradiction. No greeting, no "in this video"Could the same sentence open a 20-minute documentary?
The one payoffProve the Short was worth the timeA complete, checkable answer to a question narrower than the long video'sCould the viewer repeat the answer to someone else afterwards?
The open questionGive the reason to keep watchingThe specific thing the Short did not answer, phrased as a questionDoes the long video answer it in its first two minutes?
The pointer lineSay where to goA spoken sentence naming the long video, repeated in the description textIs a title or a topic named, rather than "my channel"?

A fill-in version of the four slots is in the YouTube Shorts script template; for a set of linked Shorts, the Shorts series guide covers seasons and cliffhangers.

Worked example: faceless explainer

A faceless channel publishes a 12-minute explainer, "Every YouTube Partner Program Threshold Changing on February 1, 2027". Its facts come from the two pages cited above, and the bridge Short runs about 35 seconds, vertical, narration over stills:

  • •Hook line: "From February 1, 2027, Shorts revenue needs 10 million qualified views in 90 days."
  • •The one payoff: "Under it, you are not removed from the Partner Program, and long-form earnings are untouched. Only the Shorts share pauses, and it resumes by itself."
  • •The open question: "The same date changes the entry bar for new applicants."
  • •The pointer line: "The twelve-minute walkthrough of every threshold that moves on February 1 is on the channel."

Every claim in that Short is sourced above; only the channel, the titles and the running time are invented.

Worked example: true crime and documentary

Illustrative, written for this article; the case is invented. A 22-minute documentary about a 1980s vault robbery. The bridge Short runs about 45 seconds:

  • •Hook line: "The vault door never opened. The money still left the building."
  • •The one payoff: "There was a service panel above the frame, and the timer only locked the door."
  • •The open question: "An inspection report from nine years earlier listed that panel. Whoever read it knew where to cut."
  • •The pointer line: "The report, the two names on it, and the interview that closed the case are in the full documentary."

A documentary Short can carry a slower hook than an explainer, because the premise is a story rather than a claim, but it cannot carry a vague pointer: "More on the channel" spends the only line the format gives you.

Make the pointer clickable, then say it anyway

After upload, YouTube Studio can carry the pointer as a feature. YouTube Help says "You can add a related video after you upload your Short to help direct viewers to your other YouTube content," and that "Viewers will see a clickable link below your channel handle" (YouTube Help). Adding one is "only available with advanced feature access", and the video you select must be "public or unlisted" and follow the Community Guidelines. The feature belongs to YouTube Studio, so write the spoken pointer anyway: a sentence in the script travels to surfaces where the link does not appear.

Prepublish (prepublish.ai) checks a YouTube script before you record: it scores the hook, structure and pacing, marks the passages most likely to lose attention, and its policy pre-flight names which categories in YouTube's published guidelines a script's wording matches. It is independent of YouTube and is not YouTube Studio's "prepublish checks" feature.

Before you record either video, paste the Short's script and the long video's opening minute into the free script check at prepublish.ai, with no login needed, and read which lines carry the most attention risk on both sides of the hand-off. Full audits are on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

How many Shorts views do you need to earn from Shorts in 2027?

From February 1, 2027, creators must maintain 10 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days to earn each month from the Shorts Creator Pool. The 90 days are a rolling window, so a channel that drops below the mark can climb back above it.

Does falling below 10 million Shorts views remove you from the Partner Program?

No. YouTube states that missing the threshold means you will not be removed from the Partner Program, and it will not impact other YPP earnings, including long-form video. Shorts revenue sharing resumes automatically once you cross 10 million views again.

How do you link a Short to a long video?

In YouTube Studio, open the uploaded Short, select a Related Video from your channel and save. YouTube Help says viewers then see a clickable link below your channel handle. The option is only available with advanced feature access, and the video you select must be public or unlisted and follow the Community Guidelines.

Do Shorts views count toward the 8,000 watch hours?

No. YouTube Help states that qualified watch hours from Shorts views in the Shorts feed do not count toward the long-form watch-hours threshold; the two are separate routes into the Partner Program. For new applicants from February 1, 2027, the requirement is 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, plus 1,000 subscribers.

Should a small channel still post Shorts in 2027?

Our view: yes, if each Short names the long video it feeds. A bridge Short is cheap distribution into an audience that does not know the channel, and the long-form earnings are unaffected by the 10 million view threshold. Without a named long video to point at, a Short is a bet on reaching 10 million views in 90 days.

What are the new Shorts incentive programs?

YouTube announced programs that may offer bonuses for YouTube Shopping, production credits for brand deals and earnings boosts for cultural trend activations, aimed at rewarding growth and engagement rather than ad revenue alone. YouTube says eligible creators will get direct notifications on how to opt in as the programs launch, and that more details are coming.
