Before and After Transformation Script Template

A retention-optimized script template for YouTube before and after transformation videos. Copy it, customize the placeholders, and start writing.

[BEFORE - 0:00 to 0:30 | about 91 words]
Open on the honest before, unfiltered, same lighting and same angle as the after will use.
"[WHAT THIS LOOKED LIKE AT THE START], and [THE ONE THING THAT WAS WORST ABOUT IT]."
Put the elapsed time and the total cost on screen here, not at the end.

[WHY IT WAS LIKE THIS - 0:30 to 1:30 | about 181 words]
"[SPECIFIC CAUSE], not [THE OBVIOUS BUT WRONG CAUSE]."
"This is not a skill problem, it is [THE ACTUAL CONSTRAINT]."
Give the viewer a reason this applies to their own version of the problem.

[THE PLAN - 1:30 to 3:00 | about 272 words]
"Our plan: [THREE STEPS]."
"Budget: [AMOUNT]. Time: [DURATION]. Tools: [SHORT LIST]."
Show the plan on screen so the viewer can follow the same order.

[THE PROCESS - 3:00 to 6:30 | about 634 words]
Work through each step with the failure in it.
"Step one: [ACTION]. This took [TIME], and it went [HOW]."
"Step two: [ACTION]. Here is where we got it wrong the first time: [THE MISTAKE]."
"Step three: [ACTION]. The fix was [THE FIX], which we only found by [HOW]."
Show the ugly middle: half finished, taped, clamped, and messy.

[THE REVEAL - 6:30 to 8:00 | about 272 words]
Cut to the after from the exact same angle and lighting as the first shot.
"Same camera, same corner, [TIME] later."
Say the number that matters: "[COST] and [DURATION] total."

[WHAT DID NOT WORK - 8:00 to 9:00 | about 181 words]
"Three things did not work: [ITEM ONE], [ITEM TWO], [ITEM THREE]."
"Two things I would do differently: [CHANGE ONE] and [CHANGE TWO]."

[WHAT IT COST AND CTA - 9:00 to 10:00 | about 181 words]
Full cost breakdown, item by item, on screen.
"Full parts list is in the description. Tell me what to transform next."

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Shooting the before in worse light or from a worse angle than the after, which breaks the comparison the video is built on.

Skipping the failed attempts, leaving a process video with no process in it.

Hiding the cost until the end, so viewers cannot decide early whether the project is for them.

Naming the obvious cause instead of the real one, which makes the fix look like luck rather than method.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I film a before and after so the comparison is fair?

Lock the camera position, keep the same lens, and shoot both at the same time of day if the space depends on daylight. Write down the settings so the after matches the before exactly. An unfair comparison is the fastest way to lose a transformation audience.

How long should a before and after video be?

Long enough to show the plan, the process with its mistakes, and the reveal. That is usually 8 to 15 minutes, or about 1,810 words of narration for 10 minutes. A quick project with one step should be a short instead.

Should I include the failures in a transformation video?

Yes. The failed attempts are where the useful information lives, and viewers tell you so in the comments. A reveal with no mistakes is a photograph, not a project.

How do I decide how much of the process to show?

Show every step that a viewer would have to do themselves, and cut the waiting. Keep the ordering intact, because a process video is only usable if the viewer can follow the sequence.
